heads up, another phone scam
Just got a call today at work. It was an indian guy. He immediately tells me to shut down my computer because there is a virus and he is going to help me with it. Right away I know it is a scam because we have our own IT guys to fix our computers at work. So I tell him that I know he is trying to scam me and instead of just hanging up the phone, he keeps insisting that I turn off my computer so he could fix my computer. This goes on for a few minutes of me telling the guy that I know he is trying to scam me and he keeps telling me to stop being so rude, he is just trying to help. So I finally hung up the phone. DO NOT EVER GIVE ANY ONE REMOTE ACCESS TO YOUR COMPUTER EVER unless of course you know the person. and also remember NEVER GIVE YOUR CREDIT CARD NUMBER OR ANY PERSONAL INFORMATON OVER THE PHONE OR THROUGH EMAIL NO MATTER WHAT. If someone calls or emails you stating there is a problem with any account you might have, hang up and call the number on the back of your credit card number or call the bank or institution directly. That way you know you are actually speaking to someone legit.

Did you ask how he knew or what the virus was called? I would be tempted to bombard him with questions to see when he would falter.
Thanks for the heads up. Dawn

I get that phone call about once a month.
I feel bad for people who fall for it.

This is a fairly common scam right now. It amazes me how many people fall for these things. My rule is if they are calling me and I didn't initiate the call, it's likely a scam.

I wanted to keep going but my boss was standing there listening and I didn't know if he was getting mad or amused. I hope they call my house and get my father. He loves getting those calls. He doesn't own a computer and he will keep the guy on the phone saying stupid things.

I had a guy screaming at me that he needed me to tell him what size toner we use. (It's included in our lease with the copy company.) He said he was with the copy company. I said if he were with the copy company he wouldn't need to know what size it was. Well, his boss knew, but his boss wasn't there & he needed to get them shipped. Well, there's no hurry, I have plenty of toner. On & on....

I get the toner guy too. When I got my first call, I told them they'd have to contact our purchasing department. The response? "I did, they told me to contact you!" hahahahahaha.... I am a nobody! Now I'm amused by it.

The local newspaper just did an article on all the scams out there. The lowest is the person who calls and pretends they are the grandchild of that elderly person and needs to get bailed out of jail. My MIL had the breaking the $50 scam pulled on her at the church garage sale recently. It's not that she's stupid but very trusting and didn't think someone would pull that crap in a church. She still cries when she talks about it. |

oh that is a new one. thankfully i have my own internal IT department at work so I would be able to tell by caller ID something was wrong.
i used to get this wierd call from a telemarketer about car insurance at my old job. it was all like your car insurance is expiring, you must get new insurance now, this is urgent we need your information! well a manager got fed up one day and picked up and played along. except she was like omg, who's car? we have like 40 people here, is it betty, she always forgets things, or janice, she just bought a new car. no not them? how about karen, it must be her, what kind of car is it again? hold on ill get everyone and you can talk to them one by one. the guy got so annoyed he hung up on her. ![]() my grandmother also got that scam. she does not go by grandma so she played along and then was like wait why are you calling me that, that's not my name, you never called me that. he got so confused he was like i don't? she then further confused him and was like well i have a few grandkids, why didn't you give me your name to let me who you are, did you forget you had cousins? the scammer just tried to play it off like a wrong number and hung up all of a sudden ![]() all you need to do to baffle half the scam artists is just ask them a few questions.
