Just How Many Times Can One Surprise the Planner or A January 2013 PTR Updated: 4/29

Welcome to my Pre-Trip Report. I am partly starting this to help keep track of my plans and partly keep myself from driving my a fore mentioned Mom up a wall before the ADRs state start. We're eight months out and within the last few weeks I've been driving my Mom absolutely bonkers with researching for a trip this far out.

Concerning the title. I'm the trip planner, and the trip isn't a surprise. It's just more Mom keep saying 'that sounds good' to things I thought she would never say 'that sounds good' to in a million years (see post 10 concerning the Wishes/Illuminations cruises for more detail) brought about the new title (was previously titled Operation: Show Mom the Magic).

First off the cast.

My real name is Sophia! I'm 22 years old as of right now but will be 23 by the time we take the trip (will be celebrating my birthday at Disneyland in September) and the resident theme park and Disney geek of the family.

Favorite Disney World Ride: Space Mountain
Favorite Disneyland ride: A toss up between California Screamin, Indiana Jones (yes I actually like that ride), and their Space Mountain (still want Disney World to install music on their version of the ride)
Favorite Disney World Restaurant: A Tie Between Liberty Tree Tavern and 1900 Park Fare
Favorite Disney World Park: Disney's Hollywood Studios (or as I have a tendency to still call it sometimes MGM)
Favorite Disney Princess: Cinderella
Favorite Disney Prince: Eric (the one that made me fall in love with the character is actually pictured above, I will explain what he did that caused it later)
Favorite Disney Movie: Cinderella
Favorite Disney Villains: The Step Family From Cinderella (notice the pattern here)
Favorite Fur Character: Stitch
Favorite Member of the Fab Five: Minnie
Favorite Pixar Movie: Up

My hobbies include following horse racing, reading up on natural disasters (I want to study earthquakes once I'm finally done with school), reading and writing.

My Mom is of course coming on the trip. She I don't think would want her photos on the internet so you won't see any actual appearances of her other than in writing.

A couple things to note: one she is not a theme park goer and two she hates large crowds. The later will be a bit of an issue on NYE but I'm hoping with some good planning I can make the day enjoyable for her. And with even more planning show Mom what caused me to fall back in love with the Disney parks.

Anyways the whole story behind the trip. So about the beginning of March right after my Princess Half trip (which I will be updating my trip report for that sometime this weekend, school kind of derailed updates) I somehow got in my head that it would be really cool to do NYE at Disney in Magic Kingdom in spite of the crazy crowds. With some crazy researching and looking up things I thought the soon to be open AoA and then presented it to my parents.

It sounded all like a great idea until we hit our first obstacle. You see I like running long distance races, its what I do and usually the WDW Marathon is the first weekend in January. About five minutes after I broached the subject of New Years at Walt Disney World I discovered much to my frustration that they had moved the race back a week. And pretty much watched any hope of convincing my two-non theme park going parents of attending NYE. Or so I thought.

Fast forward to beginning of Spring Break (last week in March). Dad was going ahead and booking the hotel room. During this time something along the lines of the following conversation occurred:

Mom: You do realize how far out NYE is from the Marathon right?

Me: Yeah I know, that's why I gave up on going to it the minute I found out it was moved up a week.

Mom: I just wanted to make sure you knew.

Now I didn't think much of the conversation at the time. I basically assumed that Mom was reminding me for some reason we couldn't do NYE. I figured Dad booked us for maybe a week or so at AoA. Because we all seemed to like the look of AoA.

Fast forward another two weeks to Easter Sunday. I am in line to get something to drink in LAX heading back to Denver after a day at the races before the day before. I am surfing the web and on a chance I decided to check dad's email to see if he had booked the hotel. And sure enough I see that there's a Disney reservation from right around the time of afore mentioned conversation took place. I hit the open button just to see what he booked well you can imagine my shock, surprise, and utter happiness when I see this:

Hotel: Port Orleans French Quarter
Dates: 12/31-1/9

Once I get over my initial shock I realize we have two problems. One we're checking in on NYE. And seeing as we were doing MK that day I realized we may have a problem getting in even if we took the earliest flight which gets in from Denver (assuming we're leaving from Denver, that could very easily change due to doctor's appointments) since the earliest non-stop gets in around 11 due to flight time and time change. The second was we weren't staying long enough for the marathon which was on the 13th.

After two quick conversations with both of my parents we EXTENDED the reservations so we checked in on the 30th (so we could head straight to MK in the morning) and leave the 14th (day after marathon) . There's a part of me that's still in shock that my parents actually agreed to a better part of a two week trip at Disney.

Funny thing is as more of a way to keep me sane I had decided to set up a small plan of what we would do if we actually went to Disney for two weeks. It never once occurred to me that it may actually happen when I constructed that first little plan. It was more of a 'if by some miracle' plan then anything else. Well guess who is going to be using a good portion of that plan with a few alterations? Moi!

While most of the trip is going to be Disney-centric as part of a negotiation to keep my Mom sane there is going to be at least one day off-site at a non-theme park. Plans are as of right now to drive up to Crystal River the night before to take a manatee tour in the early morning followed by a nice horseback ride through one of the nearby ranches. Oh and another off-site is going to be a day at Universal Studios and hop parks all day long (I love Harry Potter a lot, so that's the big focus of that side trip including hitting several rides I'm itching to go on). And maybe, just maybe a trip to Discovery Cove (been itching to go dolphin swimming for longer than I can remember).

Anyway that's all for now I guess. I will post again on Sunday with more information (too busy tomorrow). I get the fun task of telling my trainer (a Disney fan) that I'm spending two weeks at WDW!!! Her reaction along with the rest of the Disoids (as they call themselves I think) ought to be entertaining and well worth getting up at 5:00 in the morning for!

Joining in !

For 12/31, I'd suggest getting your mom on some rides/shows early (opening until late morning...then do TSI after lunch. That way she avoids the crowds early on but still gets to see some things in the morning. (Maybe I misread it but it sounded like you were going to leave mom on TSI while you go on rides...why not take her with you when it's still relatively not crowded. Stick to simple things like IASW, Mickey's Philharmagic, PP, Buzz, PeopleMove, POC or HM if she isn't into Space, Splash, Big Thunder, etc. Then head over to TSI and let her hang out for a while.)

Something I have to keep in mind with any rides I take her on is her depth perception, or rather lack there of (she has absolutely horrible depth perception). I think she would love Philharmagic but she can't really see 3D. Do you think she would still enjoy it?

I think she may enjoy some of the rides at Fantasyland but am concerned how the depth perception affecting her ability to enjoy the rides. May post over in the disability section to see if I can get some advice on it. I just realized it may be best just to pick up a GAC card for her when I want to take her on rides (bad hip) I have a feeling she won't be too enthusiastic about the long lines.

Updated schedule a bit. Changed dinner plans for Mom's birthday to Narcoossee's. I think she would enjoy that more. Was going to book online but now am considering calling to make the reservations and seeing if I can request a window seat there.

Definitely get a GAC card ... your mom may be able to get her own if her eye sight is a disability for the parks/crowds, according to her doctor.

We love Narcoosee!!

You'd have to ask on the disability board about the whole depth perception as I don't know how that would change the rides/shows.

You could always ask a CM prior to entering Philharmagic and let them know that you may need to leave early, so they could offer you a seat at the end of the aisle.

Soooo....I just realized the last night of the Candlelight Processional is the night we arrive apparently. This makes the third time I've changed the dinner plan for December 30 and we aren't even two months out.

I showed Mom Narcoossee's this morning. She likes it, in fact she liked it so much she said we should go ahead and book it. At which point I had to tell her we are still two months out from reservation day. Ah well at least I seem to be starting to get her excited thats a good thing right?

ETA: Its starting to look like we may end up eating at Epcot, a lot. Even when its not the main focus park that day. Way to many good looking options.

Decided to start a To-Do List:

Things To Do Between Now and January
Book the ADRs
Get Mom on board with all the ADRs before July
Create a home made autograph book for both this trip and the September trip (two different books)
Figure out how to tell Mom that I'm thinking a restaurant that's not at the park I'm planning to spend the day at
Try to talk parents into half a day at Discover Cove (Marshay if you are reading this it says on the website that they have wetsuits for cold days) and half a day at Sea World (for no other reason than to ride that awesome looking roller coaster)
Figure out what theme park restaurant I want to go to celebrate finishing the Marathon (its looking more and more like it will be a second visit to Cinderella's Royal table though)
Get some pins and lanyards to take up pin trading next time I'm at any of the Disney parks
Debate whether or not to at least show the Victoria and Albert's site just so you can say you at least showed it even if there is more a likelihood of hell freezing over than you going to it
Book a Wishes or Illuminations Cruise apparently

Soooo...the following conversation just took place a short while a go:

Mom: Can't we book the cruise ourselves?

Me: Yeah but it's a lot more expensive. Depending on what we did and what show it was its pretty darn expensive.

Mom: How much?

Me: About 300 dollars for the lowest price one (not talking about Pirates and Pals here).

Mom: -silence-

Me: Yeah that's why I didn't mention it before I found out about the thread where you could see if you could ride with other members.

Mom: But does it have a minimum?

Me: Well no, not as far I can see at least, just a maximum.

Mom: Well we'll look into it.

Yeah you can imagine my face was something along the lines of again. Looking back I probably should have expected it since Mom dislikes having to rely heavily on strangers but still . How many times do you guys think I am going to use the icon before we get to January at this rate? My Mom keeps surprising me.

Though its a tad bit frustrating because she seems to be full steam ahead with Disney World prices but when I mention the Disneyland things I would like to do (which are much cheaper) she is a tad bit more reluctant. But that may have more to do with her not being much of a park goer. Though she doesn't have to be in the park all day to see World of Color just for an hour to two tops to eat and see the show if she doesn't want to stay in the park.

Editing plans for 12/30 again. I took a look at the Candlelight Processional videos and now am not so sure about going. Anyone reading this have any experience with going to this and what its like?

I got about a half dozen other restaurants that I could think of eating at not in a park that night so it wouldn't be a loss necessarily just wondering what you guys think.

ETA: So I think we finally have our plans down pat for the first night. I showed Mom a few restaurants one of which I know is going to cause us to bump heads (I want to do breakfast at Ohana's since it can be hard to find Lilo some times, Mom not so much) but we both agreed LTT for dinner sounds good so that's now our arrival night plans. The only problem is now I realize that I have to push Dad to have our flights booked by July so I know when to book the ADRs for.

Yay for mom getting excited!!

Yep, from a food perspective, Epcot is it!!

Yeah, I know they have wetsuits ... I've been in wetsuits before (I'm a scuba diver) and well, let me say it's not the most pleasant thing. Also, if you do decide to do Discovery Cove -- everything I read says you want to do a whole day there! Not only is it expensive but there is a lot to do and it does cover your meals all day.

We're still going to wait to see what the weather will be like and hope it won't be sold out. If it is, no worries...we'll get there another time.

I just know myself...I wouldn't want to be in the cooler water and cooler air temperatures.

With all the other wonderful things you are doing, I wouldn't even dream of trying to get V&A in there. I consider that more of a "date" restaurant so save that one for your future!

I love the CP! If you like choirs and music and the whole Christmas theme ... and by that I mean the REAL Christmas with wisemen, Mary, Joseph, baby Jesus, angels, shepherd, etc, then you will love the CP.

I still get goosebumps remembering what it all sounded like when the full 100+ choir sang the Hallelujah Chorus and everyone around us sang, too and it was just a magical, spiritual moment.

I'm a Christian so for me, it is even more moving.

But if that sort of thing you can take or leave, then I'd suggest just planning to stop by the CP and listen from outside for a few minutes instead.

And I think this makes alteration number four to 12/30 plans? I was looking online at the other Epcot holiday proceedings as I realized there is other non CP things to do there (Mom and I kind of agree after looking further at it CP isn't out thing) that should hopefully still be going on our arrival night. Specifically I'm hoping that maybe some of the Christmas esque meet and greets will still be happening. So Liberty Tree Tavern Dinner is getting postponed until I figure out another slot for it. Maybe I'll move that Coral Reef dinner from later on in the trip to the first night and move Liberty Tree Tavern Dinner to there instead.

I am now facing a problem of possibly having to boot a restaurant I want to go to. More than likely Sci-Fi diner out of the three will get the boot since I would rather go to either LTT or Be Our Guest (if its open and I like the menu as it stands probably one night will be scheduled for both with plans to boot one if I like the BoG menu). Either way I am going to have to explain to Mom soon about the spend the day at a park, eat somewhere else plan. And then there's the fact that if we do DC meal plans are going to change again...

I went surfing once in the Pacific so it wouldn't be my first round in a wetsuit. They didn't bother me last time so I don't think it would bother me if I had to wear it at Discovery Cove. I would rather have to wear it and do the dolphin swim than not get to do the dolphin swim. Didn't realize DC covers all of the meals going to definitely put that down in the chart I'm sending Dad with the price breakdown of things that maybe neat to do (not including meal prices, I don't even want to tackle meal prices).

Today I made some accomplishments. I started on my homemade autograph book for the WDW trip! And actually got pretty far. Also I pulled the courage together to tell Mom that yes there are some places that she would prefer not to go but I really want to do them. Good news Mom's fine with it so Ohana's for breakfast is a definite go (that's the only place we've really butted heads over so far, she wasn't so enthusiastic about it however I wanted to go, Garden Grill she was a bit iffy over but wasn't butting heads as much over).
