The reason I keep returning to WDW is the atmosphere, the beauty, the sheer joy of immersing yourself in the WDW experience and this is why i will travel thousands of miles and spend thousands of Pounds/Dollars until I am no longer able.

Magical Express Bus Crash

Early this morning a Disney airport bus shuttle was involved in a traffic accident on the way to Orlando International. It was hit from behind by a semi-truck. Five passengers were taken to the hospital with injuries, although they were reported to be minor in nature.

It seems like there’s been a Disney Bus crash every other week or so. I’m sure some of it is just the law of averages catching up with an increased Disney fleet. Still, not exactly the best publicity for the resort.

The Orlando Sentinel feeds on Disney disasters. I think their reporters actually sit around and wait for something to happen. Sadly, bad news makes good reading.

I'm with Torsie on this - really? I remember 3 high profile ones from last year, 2 of which happened over the Easter weekend so nearly a year ago. Maybe I've just missed the other 20+ crashes

Anyhow, yes, I'm assuming this is the one that happened yesterday morning, not today. I do also think it's worth mentioning that while it's technically Disney's Magical Express, this is infact a shuttle service wholly owned and operated by Mears.

I know you're being hyperbolic but this is a misleading statement.

Unfortunately, accidents happen. It sounds like it wasn't the DME driver who was at fault anyway.

Buses and coahes here don't have seatbelts a lot of the time though, right?

I've not been on a coach for a long time though, so could be wrong!

But I know I've never been on a bus with one..

Most coaches have seatbelts but buses don't. Weird logic really!

No, I suppose it makes sense, buses are rarely going to go on the motorway.

And It is pretty surpising that there aren't seatbelts on them in the US...must be a reason?

Well, some buses where I live actually do go on the motorway, which is why it's illogical to me.

Definitely in that case! There aren't any motorways in London, and that's the only time I bus, you see.

This is about Canadian school buses, but makes sense in any bus situation:

Quote:
According to the Ministry of Transportation, information from all types of school bus collisions demonstrates that the current school bus design provides a high level of protection to occupants and that seat belts may actually adversely affect the safety of children on school buses (Transport Canada).

Safebus Instead of requiring seat belts, school buses are designed and constructed differently from passenger cars. School buses protect passengers through "compartmentalization", a design that includes:

* Seats with high backs;
* Seats filled with energy-absorbing material;
* Seats placed close together to form compartments;
* Strong seat anchorages.

Studies have shown that adding seat belts to the current seating configuration of a school bus can increase the chance of head and neck injuries. For a seat belt to be effective, it must be worn correctly, snug and on the upper thighs. Because school vehicles carry passengers from the very young to high school students, if seat belts were used, they would need to be readjusted and their use monitored. A seat belt not worn correctly may cause serious injuries.
