Opinions on this please......

For those of you who dont know, Disney has several unions......some of them operate indepently, others group together.

The largest group is the STUC.....commenly called the Service Trades Council.

They represent everyone from Characters, to servers, to front desk. Their contract is up for negoation, and they made a Youtube video...

Watch, and if you dont mind, share your opinion...(Without getting too political...)

There are two parts....

I don't know.
Rhetorical Questions?
How do wages compare to similar positions in the area?

Is the company big and mean? Is it any different than other corporations across the country?

As for health care, that's definitely a nationwide problem.

If I was shooting the video I would have left the part out about the woman who lost her house because she was paying an interest rate that was too high. That's not the employer's fault.

Are these people representative of all employees or did the union find people that would complain. I'd also be curious to know if the safety concerns are real, Again, not being down there, I don't know.

I don't have on rose colored glasses and I don't live down there so I don't know what the work climate is. I blame everything on the accountants, but this just seems a little melodramatic. Many companies have frozen wages and taken away 401k matches and required employees to contribute more to their health care. I'm not saying it's necessarily good but companies do what the market will allow.

I watched both videos and wrote a very long response but then erased it. I guess simply put. I don't like that the union is basically holding a gun to the company's head. By making it public Disney is forced to respond simply for damage control. On the other hand after six months of negotiations, I'm sure the union is frustrated and feel this is their best (only?) option.

I wasn't particulary impressed with the content but again I start to get longwinded about specific points.

I DO believe that Disney workers are underpaid. I don't doubt it at all, but I don't think right now the time is right to put out a video looking for public support. My husband is a cop. His three year contract has no pay increases in it. They fought to minimize the insurance increase.

Hey, I'm an accountant.

But seriously how do you blame things on the accountants. As I tell everyone, I don't play the game, I just keep the score.

DH and i were at Marshall's last night. Turns out, DH knew the cashier. She is on the night crew at the Kroger on his route. She said she had to get a second job at Marshall's because she is only making $7 an hour at Kroger. Things are not any different at WDW than they are other places.

I have had to turn down jobs where the salary was too low. Twice I have had a part time job in addition to my full time job. You don't work 40 hours a week (or less) at one job and then fuss that you can't pay your bills. You take responsibility and you do what you need to do to fix it. Making a video where you whine about the unfair corporate practices of your employer is NOT how you fix it. I wonder how many of those people TRULY understand what overhead and operating costs are involved in running a place like WDW? How many of these employees have a degree in business management or economics? How many of them have access to the financial records of the company AND have enough business knowledge to comprehend what they are looking at? How on earth do these folks know that the company is simply greedy? I am not claiming to have this sort of knowledge, nor am I claiming to understand the intricacies of running a giant corporation.

If these people were to ALL receive pay raises and nobody's insurance costs went up, then the costs would be passed along to guests in the form of higher prices, fewer services/amenities. Hello? If you read these boards there are already plenty of people screeching about the high cost of WDW. They go to VERY GREAT LENGTHS to cut the cost of their vacations. Giving raises to 25K employees could very well run the company into the ground. Then what?

It is shocking at how little they get paid. As much as I would LOVE to work there someday, it probably just won't happen b/c of the salary.

That was said with tongue firmly planted in cheek. I'm an accountant too for a medium sized WW company.

This is tough - is it really only Disney paying these low wages? I can't imagine working 50 hours a week and taking home $150. I think it's a choice in a way - if that's the pay scale in that area of the country - then maybe it's time to pick up and find a job ( I am fully aware of the condition of the job market all over, especially in Orlando) in another area of the country where Saleries are higher. I'm not sure what the answer is - but I can say that I have not had a raise in almost 5 years. My healthcare has gone up.

And sorry if this offends anyone but this OBAMACARE is horrific! I'm taking a $2,500 pay decrease because the cost of my healthcare is going up - for a crappier plan! And it's based on salary.

Now about the poor woman who works in a trailer at night with no lights - *** is up with that???

Anyway I'll shut up now - sorry for rambling - but is it really that bad JUST at Disney?

I was touched by these videos; but the two-tiered system, in which some are paid benefits new hires aren't, will break the back of the union anyway because the new hires pay equal dues without equal representation. This will have the newer workers ready to go on strike against the union. Those wanting more pay solely because they have been there longer, as if longevity were in itself a merit, are not promoting any unity.
