Let's Get Ready to Crumble!- COMPLETED!

Welcome to my food review proper!

We've just got back and I can't wait to tell you all about the amazing food we've eaten over the last 17 days. It ranged from good to spectacular to slightly disappointing (where was this? Ah...you'll have to wait to find out!)

Let's get stuck in straight away - no more pre-amble:

Tuesday 10th August:

This was D-day - or should I say WDW Day!

We got up at some ridiculous hour in the middle of the night so we could get to Manchester Airport for 6:30am.

Once there we got all checked in and went for breakfast - we decided to try Frankie and Benny's for a change.

Here are me and Kate looking bleary eyed:

And Simon and Sarah looking no better:

Kate got an omelette breakfast (which she is modelling here):

I got a bog-standard, regular breakfast:

Sarah got a pancake and fruit breakfast:

And Simon had a big, meaty, manly breakfast:

We all enjoyed these breakfasts and agreed that they fortified us for the long day ahead.

Next thing was eight hours on a plane which we survived - although the food was not great.

We got sorted at Orlando and went to check in at Old Key West.

We had booked Olivia's that night for convenience. We had eaten at Shutters in 2008 on the first night when we were staying at Caribbean Beach Resort. That had been a great success so we decided to try the same thing at OKW.

We were all very tired and we'd had a few problems with the room so it was really nice to have a lovely sit down and relax at Olivia's - Did we want a booth? Yes please!

Kenny was our server and he was great - he really looked after us. We had some delicious bread and butter to share:

And then I ordered the New York Strip steak with Olivia's potatoes and a Cabernet Mushroom sauce:

This was tasty and huge! But I did notice the abscence of something on the plate - something green! It was just meat and potatoes, very nice meat and potatoes, but not really a balanced meal. I wasn't complaining though.

The other three all had the roasted chicken breast with port wine balsamic glaze, yukon gold potatoes, frisee and roasted garlic:

At least they got some veg (not that they appreciated it!)

Although we were all quite full we simply had to have dessert (especially as it's included on the dining plan ):

I had key lime tart:

Yummy! But look how ginormous it is! Simon had chocolate cake:

Kate had pound cake:

And Sarah had New York cheesecake which she must have tucked into before I could take a picture - but here we are together at Olivias:

Yeah, still looking a bit sleepy.

We really enjoyed Olivia's and would recommend it to anyone staying at OKW - it's very relaxing and everyone was very friendly. Being on the DDP all we paid for here was the tip.

Side note: When booking all the ADRs Simon had been asked what we were celebrating. Well, we only get to Disney once in a blue moon so we celebrate a whole bunch of stuff - like my 'special' birthday, Sarah finishing her GCSE's, Kate and Simon having their birthdays in July. But this seemed to translate to some restaurants as it being Sarah's birthday (It's in November) and we got quite a few candles and cupcakes as a result. We kept quiet about it and smiled.

Great start! We've never been to Olivia's and will have to put it on the list. And I'm absolutely fine with NO GREENS on my late.

The food looks yummy! Especially the breakfast.

I was born in Liverpool and moved to the US when I was 13. I sure do miss the breakfasts. And i'm ashamed to say I haven't been back since I moved here 12 years ago.

Olivia's was great - very friendly. My husband wouldn't mind no greens - unfortunately the chicken came with some!

I love a good breakfast too! We would recommend Frankie and Benny's for anyone travelling from a British Airport.

It's not that I love to eat veggies - I think that it's just you have it drummed into you from childhood so it feels weird not to have them!

Wednesday 11th August:

Our first full Disney Day! We headed to the Magic Kingdom for lots of fun. Lunch was our favourite MK counter service - Columbia Harbor House! It's always relatively quiet in there and really nicely themed.

Simon and Kate got chicken nuggets and fries, Sarah got her favourite anchors aweigh tuna sandwich and I tried the shrimp basket which was new since I'd last been there. It was really tasty - with tons of shrimp:

Note: Let me take this opportunity to apologise for the occasional lack of photos. Throughout the holiday I attempted to take as many pics as possible but sometimes I got carried away, or forgot, or people started eating. On the whole, Simon and the girls were good sports about me taking photos and helped me out with them.

I tried to get a lighter option pudding with this meal and went for the Strawberry yoghurt. My gang thought it looked like a Dalek from Dr Who and decided to ingeniously decorate it thus:

After more fun in the Magic Kingdom we caught the monorail round to the Polynesian for our ADR at Kona cafe. I was really looking forward to this meal - and we love visiting the Poly. We were all flagging a bit at this point:

Our server was called Lucius (which our girls loved as they are big Harry Potter fans!) and he was quiet but very helpful and efficient.

I'd heard that this restaurant could be very hustly and bustly but we were seated over near the window. We could see what was going on at Kona Island Sushi bar too. It was a nice quiet spot to be in and a nice antidote to all the travelling and our busy MK day.

We soon began to perk up:

I especially began to perk up when Lucius brought me this out:

Oh. My. Word. The mighty Lapu Lapu. Much to Simon's amusement I had been anticipating trying this beauty for a long time. And I wasn't disappointed. It was gorgeous! And it lasted a long time. Yum.

But that was just the beginning of the deliciousness.

We got some starters to share. Simon and Kate tucked into a huge mountain of glazed sticky wings:

While Sarah and I share the pot stickers:

(Sorry - I'd given one to Sarah before I remembered to take a photo!)

This was the first time I'd tried pot stickers and I didn't know how I would like them. Well, I absolutely LOVED these pot stickers. Really tender with a lovely, crispy seared edge. But the real winner was the creamy ginger soy sauce. This was amazing and I wanted to lick the plate!

Next up - the entrees. Simon had the ginger crusted rib-eye:

Sarah had the chicken and noodles:

Kate had the coconut almond chicken (I had a taste of this and it was lovely - I almost had food envy):

But not quite, because I was more than happy with my meal - the tuna oscar:

I'd wanted to try this dish for ages - I really liked the look of it - but I'd read so many conflicting reports. I decided to order it anyway - and I was glad I did! It was fantastic. I loved all the different components - the fried green tomatoes, the asparagus and wasabi hollandaise, the tempura crab and of course the tuna itself. I'd never had tuna steak before so I didn't really know what to expect. I found it really meaty and nicely flavoured. A stunning dish.

We were all very full by now but decided we could manage to share some desserts. The girls got the make your own sundae:

And Simon and I shared the chocolate fondue in the hope that it would be a light option - no such luck!:

So for this meal, without the dining plan we would have paid $173-33

Thanks to the free dining we paid $75 - 31 for the Lapu Lapu, a beer for Simon, the sticky wings, the pot stickers and the tip.

We absolutely loved this meal and this restaurant - we would definitely go there again.

Crumble rating: 7 out of 10.

Coming up - Do the fried wontons live up to the hype? Or are they more Yuk than Yeti???

Shari, loved your reviews of CHH and Kona. We love CHH and haven't been the last two years but plan to be there in 20 days. We've never done Kona, but your pictures look awesome and I love me some pot stickers. I think we'll have to add Kona on our next trip (we're trying their breakfast for the first time this trip). Looking forward to your review of Yak & Yeti (I won't tell you our thoughts...yet).
