I have requested a pack n play for my 2 and a 1/2 year old - she is still in her cot (crib) at home and although she will be moving to a bed when we get home from our trip I don't want to introduce such a big new thing on the trip - I just know she will be an escaper and not stay in the bed right away!

I was wondering this too. Is the bunk bed ends against a wall by any chance? The bed rail would cover the side, but my DS scoots to the end of the crib & lays w/his back against it.

On the last cruise we went on mine were just 3 and 4. We had two rooms so I had planned to have them sleep together in the double bed, but the teen slept on the top bunk, so the 4 year old slept on the bottom and the 3 year old ended up in the double bed all by herself.

The photos are wonderfull of this little girl asleep all by herself in this huge bed.

I am sure you will find what works best for you. The ship is made for children.

My son was 16 mos the first time we cruised with him and we used the pack n play and had no problems in cat 6. When we go in Oct he will be 3 and way to big for the pack n play. I will defintely ask for the rails for the bottom bunk (my 14 DS is getting stuck on the top which he is not thrilled about ) this time. I am concerned just like some of the previous posters because he tends to roll around and even managed to fall out of his toddler bed which is a crip conversion so there is only a 2 foot opening.

Have you considered bringing a roll of duct tape and doing this? A lot cheaper than getting a larger room with enough beds.

OMG! LOL! That would solve the problem! Actually, you can do that if you don't have a high chair too.
OK, did you do that to her just for this thread???

From my point of view, the only reason for a Cat 4 is if you wanted some extra floor space to have some more room for a little one to play when you are in the cabin (and they are not napping). But the last time I was pricing that for an option, it came out to equate to $100 extra PER-DAY (over a Cat 6)... I didn't need the extra room THAT badly.

For us, DS was about 2-1/2, did fine on the couch without any bed rails (it's pretty low to the ground, so falls were not a concern). Day-time, he napped in our bed.

Thanks everyone for the great information (except the duct tape idea. But that did give me a good laugh! ) From the feedback, I don't think we will need the pack-n-play nor the extra room. I don't think we will spend much time in the room anyway. I'm going to go with a cat 6. That will save me money and I like that! I'm anxiously waiting for the 2012 dates now!

OK...so admittedly I'm an overprotective mom, but my DD slept in a pack and play on our first cruise when she was 4 months shy of being 3. It wasn't because I was afraid of her falling off the bed since she slept in a bed at home. It was due to the fact that she's sneaky and even with locks I worried about the door to the verandah. She's the type of child who would have tried moving things to get to the door lock and open the door. And, even though I'm sure the noise would have woken us up and I'm fairly certain she wouldn't have been strong enough to get the door open, it just made DH and I sleep better.
She is now 10 and the last time we cruised we had a verandah cabin, and put the kids across the hall in an inside cabin (they were 8, 12, and 14 at the time) so it wasn't a worry anymore
