Chapter One: On the Road

Wow! The day has finally arrived. We are ready to hit the road to the House of Mouse. I have been counting the days and planning … and driving my friends and family nuts … for more than a year now.

It’s 8 a.m. The car is packed, all the electronics are unplugged or on timers, the outside water and gas is turned off, the kitties are all ready for the sitter and we are on our way. One quick stop at the corner gas station to top off and pick up a bag of ice for the coolers and then we hit I-95.

Now, anyone in the DC area knows that, no matter what time of morning you hit the road, you are going to hit rush hour traffic. And so we did … just 30 minutes into the 15 hour drive. While we sit in traffic, let me take the time to introduce the DH and I. I am Jane, a 20-year Army retiree who has spent the past 10 years working for a nonprofit affordable housing organization. I am turning 25 this year (for the second time) and have been told I am a bit crazy … in a fun way, that is. I am a bit on the Pooh-sized side which, I guess comes from going all out in the Army for so many years and then suddenly becoming an avid couch potato. But I vowed when I retired in 1998 that I would never again run, ever … unless I am being chased. And then it would depend on who is chasing me. Honey, if it is Dwayne Johnson, I will run … towards him!

Anyway, I think I had better make intros to DH. His name is Leo and he is very good at putting up with me. And even though he spent most of his adult life as a professional musician in various bands (which explains why I have to YELL AND REPEAT MYSELF ALL THE TIME), he is actually pretty shy, even though it will be hard to tell in this trip report because he LOVES to have his photo taken and can be a bit goofy. The photos will be almost like Where’s Waldo.

[IMG][/IMG]

This photo is probably the only one of me in the entire TR. I much prefer to be behind the camera and am content with Leo being in front of it. This was taken just before going into the luau.

Anyway, back to the road. Even though the traffic is steadily moving, it is moving slow and Leo is now getting into his PPP mode (peepee panicked). Believe me, when he has to go, he HAS to go. Now, for some reason, he just won’t stop until he gets to a rest area. He just keeps passing exit after exit getting more and more panicked and frustrated. And when that happens, he starts driving like a lunatic. Now, he’s freaking out in the driver’s seat and I am freaking out in the passenger seat yelling at him to stop ANYWHERE. I really would love to make it to Disney in one piece.

Finally, 75 exits later (yah, I am exaggerating), we come across a rest area just south of DC. Blessed relief … for everyone on the road.

My turn behind the wheel while hubby takes a nap. Ah, peace at last. I pop in my book on CD, Odd Thomas by Dean Koontz, and settle in. An hour later Leo wakes up and asks, “so, what’s the tape about?” Have you ever tried to explain an hour’s worth of Dean Koontz to someone who has no idea what’s going on? I turned it off and said, “nothing.”

After a quick stop a couple hours down the line, we switch up again and Leo is once again behind the wheel. But at least now we are not in the city where PPP mode would be a problem.

After a quick lunch stop at a Waffle House, we stopped to top off. While Leo is taking care of the gas, I go in for some snacks. Mind you, I leave my Pentax camera on the front seat because he is right there. When I come out, I find that he has left the car in a parking space, key in the ignition, engine running and my camera sitting in plain sight … with the windows down! They say the mind is the first to go…

Anyway, back on the road and we start seeing the ever popular South of the Border signs. A sure sign we are on our way south. For as many times as we have passed this place (on the border of North and South Carolina), we have never stopped. And this was no exception. No time to waste. Mickey is waiting, after all.

After passing SOTB, the road is pretty quiet and boring and, after about 600 miles, we decide to stop for the night in Port Wentworth, Ga. We choose a Quality Inn and it looks pretty nice … from the outside. Boy, were we wrong.

When we got to our room, it was pretty skuzzy. It looked clean at first glance, but then when we got to looking around, eeewwwww. The grout in the bathroom floor was black, the telephone was sticky grungy and the sheets were actually stained like someone dribbled coffee on them. And then when I called down for clean sheets, I had to go to the front desk to get them. And when we were trying to get in the side door (closest to our room), we were trying to use our room key. One of the several men milling around the door smoking told us to, “just pull hard, you don’t need the key.” Makes me feel safe.

This is the second or third time we have stayed in a Quality Inn and have been less than pleased each time. No more QI for us … Comfort Inns all the way. Now, I know they are technically owned by the same company, but they are like night and day. Just happy I travel with Lysol spray and wipes.

Anyway, Leo was concerned he would not be able to sleep. But, by the tme I got out of the shower, he was snoring and continued to snore all night. At least one of us got some sleep. I was up every hour.

Early morning and time to hit I-95 again for the last five hours of our drive. I always forget how humid it is in the south. That Georgia humidity hit us like a brick. But, all packed up and ready to go, we are on the road again.

Aaaahhhh, there they are!!! Palm trees!

After a few hours, it was my PPP mode turn. After an hour of holding on, I was begging to stop somewhere … anywhere. But then we hit a section of road that was very bumpy. Have you ever had to pee really bad and then been bounced around for another 30 minutes? Not a pretty sight, but it was pretty funny. Of course, having to pee really bad, being on a very bumpy road and then laughing hysterically is not a good mix. FINALLY, we stop. Wheeeeeewwwwwww…

At 1 p.m., we saw it. There it was in all its glory. The Welcome to Walt Disney World! sign.

Even though we were about two hours early for check in at our hotel, Shades of Green, we thought we would just stop in and see if our room was ready. It was!!! And what a room it is! As usual, the room is perfect in every way. Plus, the location is just steps away from both the lobby and the parking garage as well as overlooking the pond where I can listen to my froggies chirping at night.

After checking in, getting settled in and buying our park tickets, we went looking for the outlet malls and then went to Magic Kingdom to catch the evening parade and fireworks. Great way to start our vacation. The following are photos of both the hotel and the parade.

Next installment, day one in the parks.

Where is Shades of Green located on Disney Property. I hear so many people mention it, but I have never seen a sign for the place.

On your first picture, you have your street address showing. I don't know if you want to blur it out somewho, but with privacy issues, some people freak out about things like that.

Looking forward to reading more.

Shades of Green is a military hotel located across the street fromthe Polynesian.

Thanks for the address tip. I will try to blur it ... or just delete it.

I've been looking forward to your trip (AND trip report) for almost as long as you have! Since my family can't go back "home" until next year, I've loved living vicariously through your planning, anticipation and excitement. Your trip report has not disappointed me thus far and as wonderful as your pictures are (yes, I've seen all of them!), I expect it to just get better (AND funnier!).

I just looked back at old e-mails and can't believe we have been Disboards, then Facebook friends for less than one year. Our mutual love of all things Disney makes it feel like we've always been friends!!

I feel the same. I guess some people just click. It's been great fun being an unmet friend.

Hi Jusero, I am enjoying your TR so far, you have made me laugh with some of your DH stories. Love the PPP mode, seems like you and I have some things in common with our DH's. Have to keep this in mind when my DH has this issue next. Just imagine his face when I tell him he is having PPP mode?????

Love the picture of your house on departure day, great with the sun rising in the picture. Said out loud to me " Even our house is wishing us a magical Disney vacation."

Where did you watch SM parade? The pictures are Great, would love to just have that view for our next trip. We alway end up behind rows of people even getting here 90 minutes before the start.

Well, I have my fastpass in hand and ready to ride with you on this trip.

We watched the parade from Frontierland on our first night. We got there just 10 or 15 minutes before parade time and found a great spot ... even though the kid next to me kept squirting me with her mister thingie. Forgot to put that in my report.

That's where we watched SM from, too! Not crowded and DH & DDBF could fade back, sit or even check out the Shootin' Gallery when they got bored with the parade. (How you could ever get bored watching SM is beyond me. DD recorded it for me & even took a shot of me just watching in awe as it passed.) It's the only parade I insist on watching.
