Reading out grades in class...

The being picked for gym class last thread got me thinking about this.

Last year at my kids' school, one of our teachers(who is really good at her job) got in trouble because she read out the names of the children who got 90 and above. The rest of the tests she just handed back. So Johnny a 100, Susie a 92 etc. But then everyone knew that poor Joey got below a 90 because she just handed him the paper.

A parent complained, she got others to complain. The teacher is no longer allowed to do this.

What are your thoughts?

Just wanted to let you know I was not one of the parents complaining.

I think it is GREAT!

Those kids obviously worked hard to get their 90%+ scores! Hopefully it motivates the others to try and achieve that score!

And just because someone wasn't mentioned doesn't mean they failed miserably... it means that they simply didn't get at least 90%!

Praise is key, at any age.

It motivates you to LEARN more, IMO.

I was 25 when I was in flight attendant training. Our "teachers" would announce who got 100% on their daily quiz.

Boy, if we all didn't go back to the hotel each and every night and study hard, only to walk into the classroom the next day bragging, "I KNOW I am going to get a 100% today... are YOU?"

Won't get any sympathy from me! Just this morning I called out the 100s on the spelling pre-tests. Anyone I didn't call knows they didn't make 100. Guess they need to try harder next time.

Just like I think the whole picking kids in gym class bothers the parents more than the kids, I think the same about this. Parents seem to get more bothered by these things than the kids ever do.

My kids get good grades etc. but I don't think their grades are anyone's business. They are not competing with the class. I think the teacher was wrong. What your grades are are nobody's business but your own. It's like sending copies of your kid's report card home to other families. It's nobody's business.

My 2nd graders beg (BEG!) to have their grades called out loud. If they take a test in the morning, I make sure I grade them either during lunch or PE, because they will hound me all afternoon to know what they made on the test. They also want to see what they got wrong. They are a highly-motivated group of kids!

If the teacher doesn't read the grades, the kids all ask each other at lunch.

My favorite professor calls out the two highest scores on every test. I LOVE when I am one of those people. People often complain about him, he expects you to work for your grades (we can't have that now!)

Wonder if Mommy will call the dean if I am sad because I don't get my name called next time

I dont know if this matters to anyone but it was in 5th grade that the teacher did this.

DS12 is a very good student and was very proud when his named was called.

So when the complaining parent called me, I did not join in, I would hope this would motivate the other students but some parents thought this was humiliating.

I despise this practice. Being born smart enough to do well in school is as random as being born likely to struggle. It makes no sense to spotlight either kid.

Yes, effort must not have anything to do with academic success. We need to stop honor roll awards and academic scholarships for college should cease immediately.

You really seem to have a problem with how smart children are currently being recognized, weren't you saying gifted and talented should be cut over on the what to cut thread?

How would you recognize children who excel if you could design a program?

I think this situation differs from the PE thread.

By calling out the names of the kids who scored 90% and above, you aren't pointing out that those names not called did poorly. I mean an 89% is great. This practice doesn't bring to anyone's attention the poor academic performers.

In the PE situation, the good athletes are picked first and the worst performers are standing alone waiting for someone to choose them.

I guess there should be no honor roll either.

What is so wrong with being proud of your achievements (as long as you don't belittle those that didn't make it). The teacher didn't say "and the rest of you SUCK!" She just acknowledged those that did better than 90.

People need to get their panties unwadded.
