DW Tickets Question / Strategy

Looking for some expert insight from Disboard community.

Someone I work with gave me this strategy on buying DW tickets and it sounds too good to be true..........so if anyone has any YES or NO on the following..........I would appreciate a response.

My family (3 adults, 1 kid) are going for to WDW for 5 days in April. I was planning on buying the 5 day - NO Hop ticket at a total cost of $879. My friend said that she has heard people who go often (like we do) can buy the 10 day - NO Hop ticket at a total cost of $939 and then after we do our 5 days.......visit the ticket window and ask to upgrade the remaining 5 days left to NO Expiration. She said we would only pay the No Expiration cost on the balance of the 5 days which comes out to be only $292 additional $$$ (since the 5 day No Hop/No Expire is normally $1171 vs. the 5 day No Hop regular cost of $879.

IS THIS TRUE???? We go 1-2 per year but only like short trips of only 5-7 days and usually do other non-Disney stuff.........so 2 trips of 5 days of WDW is fine.

It seems to me we would be saving about $450 by doing this vs. buying separate 5 days tickets on different trips since the 10 days vs. 5 days.

I would greatly appreciate any input from members on if this is a doable plan.

THANKS
The Mikool Family

She is wrong. You pay the non-expiration price based on the original days on the ticket not the days left on the ticket.

You would have to upgrade to a 10-day non-exp (or whatever length your orignal non PH ticket was), even though you only have 5 days left.

This is correct, when you upgrade, you upgrade the entire ticket. I think the only way it would benefit you is if you knew you had a 3 or 4 day trip coming up in the future and you went with the 8 or 9 day no expiration ticket. The 10 day ticket with no expiration is only 6 dollars less than two 5 day tickets, so that isn't much of a savings at all.
