Question DVC insurance - anyone ever used it?

I normally throw the insurance information away that comes with the confirmation but I'm not sure we are eligible in the UK in any case. Anyone used it? If so, I might be tempted if I do a winter trip again

This is very relevant because I am due to fly out from Gatwick to Tampa with BA on Sunday and they cancelled yesterday's and the day before's flights due to the bad weather. Virgin managed to get both of their Orlando flights away yesterday (late) but BA didn't. Already we have the option to reschedule at no additional cost.

I feel optimistic that we will get away but it did set me wondering. I should hate to lose all those points but because of borrowing and an April UY it would have been very difficult to use those points in holding.

Or does anyone have a UK travel insurance policy that would cover timeshare/points etc?

I cannot advise on UK coverage. We do not use the DVC offering because we live here in Florida; therefore, we have no sunk travel costs and can manage holding account points quite effectively if need be. Our sole risk is a need to cancel the day of or during a trip and then only the value of the lost points.

We do buy an annual policy for our Marriott timeshares as we do have sunk travel costs. Also if we travel outside the US it is good to have the medical benefits (emergent care and evacuation) that are covered by those policies as well. Marriott offers a product designed for timeshares. But there are other policies that you can research from this site Insure My Trip.

as long as you have uk travel insurance its not worth getting the DVC one,as you will be doubling up and only one would pay and usaly our travel insurance is better than the one provided by the dvc.the only benefit would be the points but have never looked to deeply into it

I'm only talking about the DVC points insurance Paul - I have good annual travel insurance.

We're travelling down to Gatwick tonight and expecting to fly to Tampa tomorrow. If this doesn't happen (and heavy snow and winds are predicted for that area tonight and tomorrow) then it could be days before we get on a flight with available space - so part of our points booking gone for a start! We would have the option to cancel and get a full refund, but that still doesn't help the points situation and neither would the points going into 'hold' in this instance.

I think I might look a bit more closely at the points insurance in future

Thanks for the link JimC - I'll take a look when I have a little more time.

The points insurance is something I've contemplated in the past but never actually taken out. I seem to remember that, last time I looked into it, the actual outlay was fairly insignificant (for the number of points I was using that trip) but I didn't follow it through.

Keeping everything crossed for you and hope you manage to get away as planned, Moira!

Thank you Hilary and Karen for your good wishes

I am sitting in a wonderful room at Vero (been refurbished since my last visit) with the ocean pounding away in the background. All went well apart from a few minor travel issues and, of course, it is cold here But I don't care ...... there is no snow and ice around, the sun has been brilliant and tonight is the last really cold night before the temps start to climb again

I hear from friends in the UK that the thaw has started there too

I'll still be looking into that insurance if we do come again in the winter though

That sounds soooo wonderful! It's good to hear you're there and that the weather is warming up for you
