12/12-18: Pop, Abraham Lincoln, and Talking to Strangers

A small intro…
I am a huge Disney freak. To others, I might seem abnormal. I’m sure many of you have heard things like, “You’re going to Disney? Again?” or “Disney is for kids”. Yeah right. Here, on the Disboards, however, I fit right in. My two dcs are following in my footsteps. Yes, I am raising them correctly. This is their second trip this year! DS is too cool to wear character clothes or pose for pics with them, but he loves rides, the theming, and talking to random strangers (more on that later). DD is loves all the girly things (the fairies, Princesses, etc.), the non-scary rides (although she does go on the scary ones-she just closes her eyes). Also joining us on this trip is my mom. I tell her it is her fault I am like this. She took me to WDW almost every year growing up. She did this to me! She says she’s too old for busy vacations like WDW, but she can still hang! She is a fast walker and rides Rockin’ Roller coaster, two requirements for our WDW trip!
This is us after our 'Ohana bfast in June. I'd pretty much given up on my hair and makeup at this point. Don't be frightened. I look a little better in the Dec. pics!

So, this was our first trip to Pop. Growing up we camped in FW, stayed at the Poly, and stayed off-site a few times. We always went on November, too, when crowds and temps were low. The last few years, however, we've stayed at CSR (my LOVE!) but gone in summer when it's blazing and crowded (I was showing someone a pic from an Aug. trip when she asked what was spilled on my shirt. Nothing. It's sweat! There's no looking good during summer!). I took advantage of the free ddp plan to convince my mom that we needed to go again, even though we'd been in WDW for 11 days in June...what can I say...I've got problems! You guys understand!

Coming up...WCC: Complaints and Food Porn

Thanks old friends (ID, momto, Mac) and new ones (praise and grandpa) for joining me! Hopefully, we pick up a few "hitch hikers" along the way!
Time for the next installment...

Saturday, day one…
We had a morning flight out of Midway. We got there early, breezed through security, and got our traditional McD’s breakfast. Our flight was smooth and uneventful. Dd played tic-tac-toe with Gma and ds and I looked through the Sky Mall magazine. He wants to buy the weirdest stuff- I can’t wait to see his house- a peeing cherub fountain, a turtle ottoman, and a Harry Potter wand make for a happy home, right? Anyway, we were cruising right along until we came to a screeching halt at the Magical Express line. I haven’t ever seen it so long! It was neither magical nor express! I don’t know if something was wrong with a bus or what pretty soon ours (going to Pop) was the only long one. I did have one Diser spotting, though. She had a Disboards shirt on with “Sab96” embroidered on it. She was several lines away though, so I thought it best not to yell out to her. I was hoping I’d spot her again but no such luck.
After our bus ride, we checked into the hotel (quickly, since we had used the on-line registration at home) and headed to our room in the 90s building, right near a giant computer. It wasn’t too bad of a walk, especially when you cut across the parking lot. Our room was noticeably smaller than a mod, but it was clean and fairly nice, nonetheless.
I remembered to take a pic before we messed it up!

I really enjoy the non-cartoony theming and lush landscaping of CSR, but the kids loved Pop’s ambiance.

We then had lunch in the food court. I got to try the tie-dye cheesecake and it was pretty good- red velvet cake on the bottom and cheesecake on the top.

The kids went for a dip in the computer pool (quiet pool right near us- it was almost empty) and then we headed to DTD.

We did a quick shop-through of DTD, getting some ideas about future purchases. It wasn’t very crowded. You could actually walk through the stores, even The World of Disney!
DS building a race car outside of his personal heaven- The Lego store!

Then we hopped a bus over to WL for a 7:30 ADR at WCC. The lodge was beautiful. My mom really likes all of that outdoorsy décor, so maybe she’ll spring for it next trip! Try to ignore dd's Daisy Dukes and stork legs (takes after her mom- not the Dasiy Dukes just the long legs! She grew a lot since I packed those shorts away at summer's end!).

We got a pager but were called pretty quickly. That’s where the “quickly” part ends. We had the slowest, most inattentive service I can ever recall having. The food was okay, but the service really tainted the whole experience. We sat for almost 15 minutes before ever being greeted. I even made eye contact with other servers and bussers, hoping they’d see we needed something. Nope. The food was “meh” (to use a word the tag fairy likes, apparently), but the rest of the experience was down-right annoying.
I forgot to take a pic of the skillet since we were ravenous by the time it got there, but I did manage to get one of the desserts. S'mores cheesecake- I wasn't impressed. It seemed like regular cheesecake with chocolate and a few marshmallows on top. Then again, I was pretty grumpy at this point (and let me tell you, I have been a server for almost three years and am pretty understanding and patient- that should tell you how bad this was!).

We then began our long trek of bus hopping home. We hit the sheets promptly since the alarm was set for 7 a.m.- Epcot rope drop!

I found your trip report --

I'm so sorry about your experience at WCC -- we had the same experience -- two hours of sitting there to eat which should not have taken more than an hour (the place was NOT filled to capacity); our server was awful and we didn't care for the food and won't be going back.

Great start and I'm here for the duration.

I know you are a fellow CSR lover, too! We decided not to stay because of the money difference this time (approx $400) and the fact that we had stayed there for 11 nights in June! Pop isn't the same, but, hey, it's still WDW so I can't complain! Welcome!

Sounds like you're off to a pretty good start, minus the dinner at WCC. I've often wanted to try it but never have, read quite a few reviews of slow service though which would be brutal for us with DS9.

Looking forward to more.......

Yes, and I talked about this on another thread...very noisy (not a problem for us) but also inconsistent/startling noise (shouting). The person asking had two sons on the spectrum and from my experience, WCC would not be a good choice if they are sensitive to that sort of thing.

This was a long day, so I'll break it into two installments for you!
Sunday, day two…
Remember earlier when I said ds loves to talk to random strangers? Okay. We arrived at our bus stop to Epcot promptly at 8. There was one group in front of us-two middle aged women and one middle-aged man. The man and ds somehow start talking and joking around. They ended up talking the whole bus ride. He was from LA and had never been to Disneyworld. When we arrived at Epcot, we parted ways and I commented to my mom that this guy reminded me of a grown up version of ds. Anyway, we got over to rope drop and were actually at the front of the rope (amazing, since our last few summer trips had us in the back of a large crowd). We saw some characters and the kids even got a hug from Mickey.

We headed over to TT and were among the first there. Then guess what? The ride broke down! We had to wait for about ten minutes for it to start up.
I look like I am napping in this pic, ds has his arms up, and if you look carefulling, right beneth the "o" you can see dd's screaming mouth!

Meanwhile, I am starting to stress about crowds building at our next stop- Soarin’. Eventually, the ride started and we ran over to Soarin’, got a FP, went on The Land (love this ride!), used our FP on Soarin’, and then meandered through World Showcase. We had lunch at Tangeriene Café (one of my must eats every trip) then looked through some of the countries.
Schwarma platter (probably spelled wrong)

Baklava...so good! Rich, dense, dripping with honey. We only ate two pieces of it and gave the rest to some nearby teens.

My kids love Epcot and all of the stores and shows in the countries. We saw a few regional Xmas things, which was cool. DD says the Santa in France is “freaky”- he’s very thin with rosy red cheeks. She did say, however, upon seeing the American Santa, “Oh, he’s real. I am sure”. He’s pretty good. We didn’t wait in line to see him since ds started complaining about now wanting to see him.
Ds likes to pose and set up shots. He wanted it to look like he was holding this guy!

CM making Mickey out of a mop and water-cool, random!

More posing ds

We had to hurry to our SA ADR. We got there a few minutes early and went on the ride.
Donald and I! We have a little joke about all things Spanish. I have to take three semesters of Spanish to graduate and I am horrible at it. Terrible. My only two Cs in all of college- one semester to go!

Then we checked in and were sat. I really don’t know why people hate this restaurant. I have been there four times and loved it every trip. My mom specifically asked to go there since she’d never been. The service was wonderful. Myriam was attentive and very nice. She was our favorite server of the trip. There’s not a ton of options of the menu, so if you are picky, I’d advise you to check it out first. I had chicken and my mom had steak. She also had a margarita so strong that one sip put hair on my chest. Our food came out very quickly and was delicious.
Kid's meal- chesse quesadilla

Steak and stuffed poblano, margarita

Chicken

Mousse

Next up? We hop over to EMH at DHS!
