Beware of!

Our family just returned from our first, fabulous Disney cruise on the Magic! Unfortunately, we had a problem with DH’s tuxedo rental and I wanted to share it with those of you who may be considering a formalwear rental for your cruise.

I was really looking forward to our family getting dressed up for formal pictures during the week, so I rented a tuxedo for DH through, the company that Disney uses for their formalwear rentals.

I ordered the tuxedo over the telephone, as I wanted to get clarification on the sizing for the items included in the rental. I was given a confirmation number but nothing in writing.

The tuxedo that was delivered to our stateroom included shoes in the wrong size (wide vs. medium width) and shirts that were obviously not true-to-size as the sleeves were extremely short on DH. We called Guest Services and they sent the tailor to our cabin to check the items. They ended up bringing back two more shirts form the onboard formalwear inventory. Unfortunately, they did not have shirts in the next size up, so the new ones we got were very big on DH. Not only that, but they were stained on the sleeves! There were no shoes onboard in DH’s correct size, so he had to make due with the wide shoes that did not properly fit.

We called Guest Services to complain about the poor quality of the formalwear and the incorrect sizing. A person from GS came to look at the items and agreed that the shirts were in poor condition and that the shoes did not fit properly. She said she would contact on our behalf to let them know about the situation and to see if they would do anything to compensate us. Unfortunately, even after the DCL GS rep explained the situation to, they would not do anything for us. They stated it was our word against theirs in regards to the shoe size and did not seem the least bit concerned about stained cuffs on the shirt.

I told the DCL GS rep that we truly appreciated her efforts and that we realized that this was beyond her control. However, I told her that we would never again rent formalwear on a Disney cruise if was the supplier. She said that we are not the first ones who have complained, and I told her that I hope DCL will reconsider their choice of when renegotiating a contract for formalwear in the future.

As I said, our cruise was great and by no means did this taint our view of DCL or the wonderful time we had on our trip. However, I just felt compelled to share with other DISboard members our negative experience with renting formalwear through DCL (via If you want your DH to wear something nice for the cruise, I would recommend either putting the cost of the rental towards the purchase of a tuxedo if you can get more use out of it (we don’t go many formal places so we didn’t consider this option). Or, just let your DH wear a nice suit. He will fit in perfectly with most men on formal night!

Sorry to hear about your bad experience.

We have used them several times and have had nothing but positive experiences - and perfect fits.

We do, however, order online - so therefore we have a written record of what we told them. We also get an email confirmation (again confirming all sizes) just for added peace of mind.

We will continue to use them and will report back here if our experience is any different this time.

Looking forward to the Disney Vacation Club Villas at The Grand Floridian Resort!!

Thank you for posting. All any of us can do is to report our experience, and it's good to hear both sides.

Just a hint--for little boys' tux--they are frequently available on e-bay very inexpensively.

We also booked on line and my DH's tux fit like it was custom made for him. We were more than pleased. Sorry you had a bad experience.

We ordered online for our last cruise for my dad, my husband, and my son....we didn't want to waist the packing space. All three went and got professionally measured and we used those numbers to order the tux's. DH and DS turned out to be a good fit, but my poor Dad's was way out of size. My parents called GS and they were going to bring extras, took them a long time to show up and so my parents missed the sailaway party. They had some other issues too....seems like their experience was similar to the OP. We said we wouldn't order tux's again, but the other night my husband said he didn't want to pack fancy stuff, that he would take his chances and order again. So it looks like we are going to try again. I think it must be hit or miss.

If you paid by credit card contact the card company and file a complaint. They should perform a charge back.

We used them a couple of times. The first time DH went to a local tuxedo shop to get sized and that is what we used for the order. No problems at all. Sorry you had a hassle.

I am glad I did not read this before our wedding. We rented from them for our cruise wedding and I was nervous about it but my now DH's tux fit very nicely and no stains! I heard RCCL stopped using them I wonder if this is why. We also ordered online but I actually inverted two numbers like instead of a 41 length I had entered 14. I emailed and called them to correct it and they did, no issue. Maybe the wedding fairies were watching out for us, but I am very thankful they were.

I'm sorry to hear you had such a lousy experience with them. We've ordered from them for three of our cruises -- including the back-to-back in the Med. I did, however, order online and printed out the confirmations. We've never had a problem with any of the sizes (including shoes).

Luckily, after seven cruises the "novelty" of dressing formal/formal for us has worn off. Now it's just shirt, tie and vest -- so hopefully won't have that expense anymore

Wow! I can't immagine what happened. We have rented from them several times and have found the service and fit to be excellent. We enjoy the convenience of not having to pack a suit or tux and the feeling that dressing up adds to the cruise. My husband and boys look really handsome in tuxes and I love to shine with them.

Thank you for sharing your experience. Even if it only happens to a few people, at least we have fair warning that it could happen.
