Of course if they *did* start serving alcohol at MK, I would be first in line, but it doesn't rent space in my head or anything

need help quick re: valium dosage for 10 lb dog

I am in for a sleepless night!

I just took my chihuahua to an emergency clinic a few hours ago. she was yelping in pain and she was diagnosed as having a pulled muscle in her neck, She was prescribed prednisone and also valium. The valium is 5mg, and I was told to give her a quarter, and if it doesn't seem to be working, give her a quarter more. So that's what I did, around 5 pm...she got a total of 2.5 mg.

She never stopped crying out in pain, not ever. Any time she moved, she yelped for a good 20 seconds. I will say that my dog is a big wimp and is overly dramatic, but the fact is, she is in pain.

I called the emergency clinic again, and this time the vet tech (different one) told me that *HE* gives his 10 lb mini pin 25mg (that's twentyfive) of valium at a time, when travelling or doing his teeth. He recommended giving her more than that, at least a full valium (5 mg.) Maybe more. Of course I am supposed to contact my regular vet tomorrow.

Sorry so long...have you given your dog valium, and what was the dosage? Thanks.

I would try one for you and one for the dog and see how that works out.

Really?

Well, I posted that I had already given her a half (at 5 pm), and it did not work, didn't do anything. So when I posted this (close to 2 a.m. I think..it is all just a blur now!) I wanted to give her more, per the vet tech. I decided to go for it, and I gave her 1 and 1/4 (so, just about 6 mg) and even that did not do much, she still yelped in pain thru the night.

I will be calling my vet today. Thanks anyway.

First of all, my apologies in advance if I insult anyone, but DO NOT take medication dosing instructions from the person that answers the phone, the vet tech is NOT a vet.
and do NOT give your 10 pound dog 25 mg of valium at once

Thanks for the reply. I have an appt with my "real" (usual)vet today at 2 pm. I did give the dog 6 mg (1 1/4 valium) this morning and she does seem very "drugged" but also alert. She raises her head when she hears my voice or someone walks in the room.

I understand what you mean about the vet tech, and trust me, that's why I did not follow his instructions. He is not a vet, and I don't think anyone can get offended about you saying I should only follow a doctors instructions. I just posted here so I could hear some other opinions.

I did find this when I googled...from
http://www.petplace.com/drug-library...ium/page1.aspx
-------------------------------------------------
Dosing Information

Medication should never be administered without first consulting your veterinarian.

The typical dose administered to dogs is 0.25 to 1 mg per pound (0.5 to 2 mg/kg) and 0.25 to 0.5 mg per pound (0.5 to 1 mg/kg) in cats, intravenous as needed or as often as every six hours.

Diazepam has been administered as a liquid solution by the rectum in dogs having convulsions (because other routes of administration are difficult to use in this instance). The dose is higher, 0.5 mg per pound (1 mg/kg).
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So, in that case, they seem like they are okaying 10 mg maximum dose for her 10 lb weight.

You are not going to believe this...but of ALL DAYS...we are having a NEW ROOF put on the house. The noise is CONSTANT and even if she was feeling ok, this would be bad for her. But the fact that I am supposed to be keeping her quiet/resting etc...this is the WORST POSSIBLE TIME for this!

Thanks again for your response!
