Spinoff of missed flights - delays so lengthy.....
So, how many of you have wound up on flights that ended up taking longer than driving would have? For me, if you include travel to/from the airport & security time as part of your "flight", I'd venture to say 90% of the flights I've had of 400 miles or less would have been quicker if I'd have just driven, and quite a few that were significantly longer. And the bulk of my flying has been pre 9/11, so I can only imagine things are even worse today.

Well, when I was twenty I flew from Boston to Hartford to pick up my brother's car - but it wouldn't have made sense to drive
.Some years later, but definitely pre-9/11, Eastern Airlines tried offering service after they'd gone out of business. $6 one way Boston/New York, first come, first served. Got to the airport around 6 AM, boarded a flight at 1:30

The shortest flight I can think of that I have taken is Pittsburgh-Philadelphia, which would have been a 5 or 6 hour drive. Even with driving to the airport, security, flight I don't think it was that long. Plus, I am not comfortable driving that long myself. The longest I have driven myself is Pittsburgh-Columbus which was about 3 hours. There was no direct flight so it made sense to drive.

I think one of the big things on many of my short flights was that driving to the airport often took me in the wrong direction. One return flight from MS had me driving 2 hours in the wrong direction before I ever got to the airport.

It took me door to door from Charleston to Philly...10 hrs. It is a 12 hour drive so almost too much time. I had to fly from Charleston to Chicago then Chicago to Philly.....That's probably the worst in terms of comparing flying and driving.
I then realized that I usually flew out of BWI even with the extra driving it then was only a 5hr trip door to door; much better. |

I've seen some REALLY stupid routings, but this has to be the best one yet.
I live in West Palm, which is about 3 hours from Tampa. People will fly from West Palm to Atlanta to Tampa. Flight time is an hour and 20 minutes here to Atlanta, and an hour and 20 from Atlanta to Tampa. Taking into account layovers in Atlanta, and time to get through the airports at either end, and you're talking a 6 to 8 hour period for a 3 hour drive.

Seattle-Portland is only about 1.5 hours, if that. There's a thing here where you don't have to go through lengthy security lines. It takes about 3 hours to drive.

There is NO way I'd ever agree to fly anywhere I could get to in 3 hours by car LOL.

I was flying Fayetteville, AK to Lexington, KY via Cincinnati. We were delayed out of Fayetteville while they de-iced the plane. I missed my connection in Cincinnati by less than 5 minutes. It was a three hour wait for the next plane. Drive time from Cinci to Lexington is ~90 minutes at most.
