What happens if you refuse an 'upgrade'?

When we arrived at POFQ yesterday (we checked-in online, always do) we were told they had overbooked the resort and they gave us an 'upgrade' to a 1BR villa at SSR instead. I know this happens from time to time, but it's never happened to us. I didn't think of asking for other options at the time (we're not fans of SSR) and I know capacity is pretty full right now with the conference going on. But I'm just curious how this normally works. Could we have asked for a different resort (I would have moved to a value even), would a room at POFQ likely have opened up if we just stowed our bags and waited until late afternoon, or are you pretty much automatically stuck at SSR or OKW when they 'overbook'?

This happened to me a few years ago, when I went a week later than normal to accommodate friends.

I go the week after Thanksgiving, but ended up the following week at POR smack in the middle of Pop Warner. They said I had already been moved to CSR.

Huh??? I was not aware of Pop Warner and the whole thing, so I insisted I stay where I had booked the year before and where I felt most comfortable.

They kept me there, but put me in a room facing the parking lot, and reimbursed me for my waterview room after much consternation.

By Tuesday, I was willing to move anywhere they had, but anyone who had moved to CSR moved already. They offered me a suite at SSR, but at a higher cost, so I opted to stay at POR. Actually as the week went on, the kids left and we really enjoyed our location.

So you can refuse an upgrade; the next person who comes along most likely will take it and it will just take longer finding a room and a location for you.

My only problem with SSR is it looks too much like home to me... I live pretty close to Saratoga Springs NY. It feels less like being on vacation then the ones that look nothing like home. AKL is my favorite I have stayed in.

We are 2 adults who each have our own bed (mom and adult child) a 1 br in SSR would put one person in the king bed in the bedroom and 1 person dealing w/ the pullout every night - right?
What a shock, to go from the smallest/cozy moderate - POFQ, to the huge sprawling biggest timeshare on property of SSR and be down to only one 'real bed' when you expected two.

Yes, you can refuse the upgrade like others have said unless they do NOT have a room. But I will say is, the pullouts at SSR are quite comfy and the one bedroom units have a washer and dryer, jacuzzi tub with separate shower, and a full kitchen. I would never refuse that but to each his own.

I've slept on the SSR sofa without opening it. It's wide enough for one person when you remove the back cushions, and it was comfortable.

That would be my issue. I'm not fond of sofa beds and that upgrade would mean using the sofa. I'd politely ask if we could be moved to a location/room with two queen beds. However, if it were just me on a solo trip or me and dh (one bed needed), I would be thrilled with a SSR studio room.

With all due respect, there isn't a reason I would turn down a 1 BR suite at SSR for a value. Not even for a second. I may be a little biased as that is my home resort with DVC.

I agree that you don't always have a choice. It depends on whether there are any rooms left. If you arrive after they have given out the very last open room at your booked resort, no amount of refusal will get you a room there.

I also agree that sometimes you are much better off just taking the change and rolling with it. I remember reading all the posts from people who got caught up in that Pop Warner mess, and there were a lot of people who regretted staying at their original resort. It depends on the circumstances.

But I also understand that the resort choice is a big part of the vacation. I booked a TPV at CR over July 4th, specifically to watch the fireworks from my room. I wasn't planning on going to the parks at all. I would have been very upset if I was moved to another resort (being a local, I probably would have demanded a refund and just gone home). There aren't a lot of rooms that would offer the same view that I could try to switch to.

I don't think there are a lot of overbooking situations at Disney, or we would hear about it a lot more. At least Disney has other hotels to move you to. At other hotels you can be sent anywhere - other brands, same brand but several miles away, it's not pleasant.

Since you arrived early, they more than likely still had rooms left but were trying to cure the overbooking early so if someone did put up a big stink, they still had rooms left to accommodate them, rather than having every room occupied. If you arrived late at night, they more than likely would have been filled to capacity in which case you would have been walked to another resort. The good news is that the later you arrive and the fuller they are, the more bargaining power you have. When POR's renovations became delayed and rooms weren't going to be ready, people were phoned and offered upgrades. Some people were able to negotiate and get a resort they wanted, since Disney was in a jam.

I'm staying there in Dec only because I couldn't get anything else. I'm looking forward to staying at a resort I've never stayed at before, but it certainly wasn't my first choice.
If I had booked a particular value resort, I booked it for a reason. There are times I really want that 'in your face' theming. I love Pop and am prepared to love AoA for my one night there prior to SSR. If I had booked a room at one of those resorts only to find that they had overbooked and I now had to move??? I wouldn't be a happy camper!!!
Do you ever get upgrades at BLT? We are staying in a 1 BR 11/27 till 12/4? Also, any room requests?

I'm sorry if this is a stupid question BUT....

If we do the online check in at the resort 10 days before does this mean we can't be bumped as we have already been assigned to a specific room?

Or would it still be a possibility?

I would just be devastated if we got moved from the LM room, we debated between CSR, POR and POFQ but ultimately decided on LM because of the theming and the fact that I love little mermaid :/

You can still be bumped. The last time I was downgraded I had used online check in right at 10 days out. Your room is truly not your room until they give you the keys. Up until then, it can be put back into inventory and given to someone else.
