I don't know if it depends who you're flying with or not, but we were told by Virgin to put the child's age when departing.

Yes, i think that's the same with every airline if an a child is under 2 when they fly out they are classed as an infant and you don't have to pay for a seat if they turn 2 before the return flight then they are classed as a child and you have to pay for the flight on the return flight. However I don't think that it matters if, for example the child is 8 on the way out and 9 on the way back.

It may depend on whether you book a package or flight only. I always thought you put the child's age on date of return.
Here is a link to what it says on Virgin Atlantics website - http://virginatlantic.custhelp.com/a...WFNBTlBYN2w%3D

Might help if we know the company to do a little searching.
I know Disney & many airlines work on age on outbound flight or arrival date but if its a package or charter airline it might be different.

2 things, Kayak are only a search engine so it depends which airline you choose. Other is that it makes no difference age 6/7 for flight only, same price for either, he will be classed as a child. Once you book you will have to enter date of birth rather than age.
