Let's celebrate 15 years together by eating around the World! 05/24 F&W

Welcome foodies! I've been sitting around planning this trip for a couple of months and I'm almost done, so I thought I would share our planning!

This will be my 3rd visit and DH's second visit to WDW. Last year, we were at WDW from October 2 to 14th, staying at the Dolphin. We got to try almost all of the F&W booths a couple of TS restaurants and some QS spots. The link to that first review is in my signature.

This year, we almost cancelled our trip, since we were supposed to move to a new house, but that fell through and I was very glad that I hadn't cancelled our hotel reservation! We are again planning to stay at the Dolphin, King room, from October 16 to 28th, 2012 (12 nights).

On this trip, we will be celebrating 15 years together (we're highschool sweethearts). We also have 3 boys, ages 4, 6 and 8, but they are staying at grandma's house. We don't get to go on dates at home, so a couples-only vacation is a real treat. We plan on going back with the kiddos in 2 years.

As a side note, I should mention that I had weight-loss surgery in November 2010. Since then, I've lost about 180 pounds, going from 350 to 170 pounds. This has been a real life changer, but it has also left me with a stomach of about 4-5 onces. So I don't eat a lot, but I must eat often, concentrating on protein. Greasy/fried food is not my friend.

Since we will be going to many TS restaurants, we plan on splitting meals or getting a couple of appetizers and skipping mains. Of course, I must have my cocktails, and I have a list of snacks to try out, too. Let's not forget our plan to try something from every F&W booth, too!

While I like more salty/savoury dishes and snacks, DH is a giant sweet tooth on legs. And this man can eat! So while I try a bite our two of most food, he is the one actually finishing the dishes. He's really laid back and goes with the flow but sometimes chuckles and calls me the Disney Geek...

This is a pic of us, last month. We both are French-Canadian living in Quebec, just besides Ottawa. I teach French to English-speaking civil servants and DH works in sales. DH does not speak much English, however.

Let's get this moving! Next: our plans and ADRs.

Sounds like you have some great plans. Looking forward to reading more. By the way, WDW without the kids is a whole lotta fun

Hi Stephanie! I was happy to see you had started a PTR. You have many great restaurants planned again for this trip. But I'll be especially interested in hearing about the F & W Festival food, as I will probably not be going this year. So I will be living vicariously through you and a few others here on the DIS who are going during that time.

Have a great trip and enjoy that avocado margarita!

So two of my friends and I had a week-end shopping/eating get-away. We booked two nights at a Sheraton in Montreal and shopped until we dropped. We *might* have to eat peanut butter for a couple of weeks, until our bank account gets back on track lol! I found plenty of cute clothes for our trip and for work and some brand new Oakley sunglasses.

Friday night, we went to a sushi place: Maïko. We had a 9:30 reservation and were seated right away at a nice window table. The place was pretty packed.

We started with cocktails. I had a Geisha: cherry brandy, curaçao and pineapple juice. This was delightful. My two friends got a frozen pineapple-based cocktail that was really good too but a little sweet. We also got some hot green tea and water.

Geisha

We perused the extensive menu: chef's specials, sushi per roll, soups, appetizers, à la carte section... and I spotted oysters. My two friends never had oysters and I convinced them to try it.

Huîtres kaki
Fresh oysters with yuzu sauce, tobiko, shallots, sesame seeds, lemon zest and ginger.

Wow, these were really good. Not as meaty as I like, but kinda smallish. The garnishes really went well with the natural saltiness of the oyster and added some nice texture, especially the caviar that pops in the mouth. I was kind of scared that the ginger would overpower the dish, but it was subtle and lovely. A great start.

We then chose another chef's special: the Volcano.

Volcano
Four fried sweet potato chips topped with crab meat, goberge, spicy mayonnaise, cilantro, green onions, sesame seeds and tobiko

Again another hit! The chips were crispy on the outside, warm and not greasy at all. Inside, there still was some nice moisture and a great sweet potato taste. The toppings looked like a slaw and I was a little afraid about the goberge (white fish used in imitation crab) as I do not love it, but there was not too much of it, so it was very palatable. Luckily there was much more real crab meat. The cilantro added freshness and the mayo gave just a hint of spicy kick. The chips were also sprinkled with some small purple edible flowers. Beautiful presentation.

We then selected three rolls that are not on the online menu. There was a more "tame" roll made of smoked salmon, cream cheese and avocado selected by my less adventurous friend, a classic tempura shrimp roll and a fabulous scallop and tempura roll.

Rolls (on the left: tempura shrimp and smoked salmon; on the right: scallops)

Starting with the smoked salmon roll: I was a little disappointed of this choice since I find it kind of boring and ordinary. However, the ingredients were really fresh and the avocado shined: it was perfectly ripe, creamy and buttery, just delicious. I wouldn't get this again as there are much more interesting choices on the menu. And I can say the same thing about the tempura shrimp. It was fresh, the shrimp still a little warm, not greasy at all, but overall a bit boring when you consider the other possibilities on the menu. My two friends however, a little less adventurous than me, loved both selections.

Now the third roll was another story. It was delectable. The scallops were small and buttery, perfectly delicate and tasty. The tempura did not overpower them, but added another texture that this roll needed. I would get this again in a flash. It was wonderful.

We did not use any soy sauce with the sushi as we feel it takes away from the taste too much. I did however dab a little wasabi on the smoked salmon and the shrimp tempura roll.

We had also some desserts. We chose the sorbet trio.

And the traditional Banane flambée

The sorbet scoops were evidently pre-formed and placed in the freezer, and you can see the ice formed at the surface. It was so hard that we had to wait several minutes to taste only to discover that the texture was gritty and just off. The server noticed this and removed the plate and comped it.

The Banane flambée I did not taste since I was too full, but my friends agreed it was really good. Not exceptional, but good.

We loved our slow-paced meal here and I can't wait to bring DH to this restaurant. The menu is so extensive and I really want to sample more: there was even a foie gras sushi! Also on the must-try list: soft-shell crab, beef sashimi and urchin.

This also puts Kimono's on the top of my list for our October trip to get a nice sushi fix.
