Upgrades at Port?

Just wanted to see if anyone has upgraded recently when checking in, and if DCL is still having some pretty good deals. I'm currently booked in a stateroom with a verandah, but was hoping to maybe upgrade at the port to a Conceriege Family. I thought it might be a little treat since it's during my birthday! So what experience have ya'll had!!

Is it usually a pretty good deal to upgrade at port?

Do you happen to know how many concierge rooms there are on the Dream? We are booked for a 3 night next July and there are alot of cabins in every category still available. I know it's still a year away, but we were also looking at the middle of December 2013 and there seems to be alot less availability for that time than 5 months earlier in July . I'm sure with December being quite a bit cheaper that's a factor, but I figured more families would go in July since school is not an issue. Is there any way to tell how booked up a cruise is other than looking at your dates on the DCL site to see what is still available?

It usually is a really good deal, but it does depend on how many are available and how booked the ship is. I'm really hoping since we set sail in January some pixie dust will come my way!

Upgrades at the port are a great deal...provided they are available on YOUR sailing date and at the very minute that you walk up to the supervisor's desk. Concierge upgrades are the best value, but you have not been able to take advantage of the shoreside services in advance (so you are really not getting quite the same deal as someone who paid the bigger bucks in advance).

There is no way to predict availability; it's just luck. We did a B2B and upgraded the first leg. The second leg we were the first people in the terminal--full ship, no upgrades available.

Good luck to all above, but always book a cabin where you will be happy.

We were originally booked in a Cat 8D (Oceanview Family Stateroom) for 5 people (2 adults, 3 kids - 12, 5, and 3). The only cabin available for upgrade was the Concierge Family Oceanview Stateroom W/Verandah (Stateroom 11000). At the port it was an additional $1336. I know when I looked about a week before the total price would have been over $15k for that stateroom.

We had no intention to upgrade but thought it wouldn't hurt to ask. Not sure if it was a great deal or not but we loved it and would do it again for that price in a heartbeat.

I will have to say that you probably have to get their super early. We were at the port at 10:30 and checking in probably around 10:45. We had the 11-11:30am boarding pass. I am sure if we came later it would have been gone. The ship was full and the list of cabins available were less than 5 total.

We just upgraded at the port for an 8 night cruise from Galveston sailing 3/29/2013 from an 11B to a 5B for $840. We had booked this cruise with the kids sail free promotion so we felt like this was a great deal! Hope this helps those looking to get an idea of port upgrade pricing.

Before you sail is there a way to predict if there might be upgrades available at port?

The only way I know of would be to check cabin availability for your cruise a few days before your sail date. I think they "close out" the sailing about three days prior to the sail date, and after they do that your cruise won't show up on the web site.

I was actually on the MR sailing before the first Hawaii sailing. The night before we disembarked I asked if there were cabins available. I was told yes and they could book me on it if I wanted. Someone else said that the week before it sailed there cabins available for booking in the site. Then I heard from someone one who went on that trip that there were no cabins available for upgrades at port. I don't know what time they got there though. So it seems there's no true way to know I guess?

upgrading at port

I am sailing on the 14 night Hawaii cruise in October and right now I booked into stateroom 2045 a deluxe inside stateroom. I wanted to know what the cost might be if I tried to upgrade to a stateroom with a veranda at the port? We would love to have a veranda as it s a very long cruise...? Any help with info would be great as then we would know how much money to set aside. Also so you know we booed this cruise with DVC points so I am not sure if that changes anything..... Thanks!

Welcome to the Cruise Board. This is probably one of the most asked questions on the board. There is no set price that can be given with certainty. The first thing would be IF there are upgrades available. They are not always available on every cruise.

What you have to do is check in at the port first....then when that is done you then go to the supervisor's desk and inquire about an upgrade. The CM will consult a chart that will have the price it costs to upgrade from the cabin you booked to the cabin you want. No one here has that chart but there are several threads of what people paid to upgrade to different categories.

The "average" is about 1/3 of the cost of what it would cost you to upgrade before getting to the port so a good deal....if an upgrade is available.
