Talking here we go...

Vacation officially started on June 26th-when the car was packed after dinner
We live in upstate NY on the Vermont border, in the adirondacks.Located between Lake George NY and Rutland Vermont areas. We are northerners that cannot wait for the sun!
Went to bed by 10pm on Friday 26th since we have to be up VERY early to head out to Amtrak Sat morning in the wee hrs.

3:30AM wake up time!!I had everyone clothing laid out next to their beds since I knew it would be too early for everyone.Hubby and I were up and ready in 10 min and then dressed the 4yr old as she was 1/2 asleep. All in the car by 4:05am and headed to Albany NY where we catch our first train. This is my 4th trip to Disney on Amtrak.Trip to Albany takes 2hrs. and our train leaves at 7AM so we are all set on time!We arrive and park($40 due when we return) enter and get tickets printed for train trip.Everyone is tired but very excited!!!We are off to DISNEY WORLD!
7:00AMTrain leaves Albany headed to NYC Penn station.-where we will connect to our 'overnight train'.We are having fun and enjoying the fabulous views of the Hudson River on this sunny morning!Saw tugboats and tankers and lighthouses-OH MY!We arrive in NYC by 10 AM and are greeted by the mobs of people there"We are not in Kansas anymore..."nothing like the rural life we have at home!

Talking

6/27-28Boarded train in NYC by 11AM and headed south. We had 2 roomettes(private rooms with 2 beds each) and that includes all our meals in the dining car(you may also take meals back to your roomette). You are allowed to order whatever you like and non alcohol drinks are included.Enjoyed our meals and the views.Washington monuments for lunch!Went to bed by 9pm-so tired!

6/28 I SEE A PALM TREE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We were all excited when we opened our curtains to see palm trees! It is always a fun game we play to see who will spot the first one! Also glad to find we only had 2 more hours until we were in Orlando! We are freakin out now!
Arrived in Orlando by 11AM and headed right to Hertz counter inside train station. This was my 1st time renting a car-EVER!I had scoured the net gathering codes and prices for months.I had finally got Budget to give me a price of $295 for the trip(6/28-7/8 or 12 days)FABULOUS!Only catch was I had to get a shuttle to bring me to Budget since they were not at train station area.SOOOOO, I called Hertz and told them my deal and asked if they would like to do a price match of the competition-and they said yes!I arrived at the counter and the offer was honored and I was on my way in under 10 minutes! They did not even ask for proof of the deal
The car had 150 miles on it!!!!A Kia Rio, and believe it or not, we fit 3 large and 2 med. suitcases inside it with 4 people!Like a clown car really!
Off to Carr Beach Resort(our 1st time staying on disney property

PICTURES COMING IN POSTS!!

Just starting to read your train adventure - can't wait to get on with it but had to comment. It is my belief that everyday there is a reference to The Wizard of Oz if you are paying attention. YOU made my day - 2 references! :-)

lisa-upnorth - Really enjoyed your train report. We are taking the auto train from Lorton, VA to Sanford, FL on April 16/17. Can't wait! Have taken the Amtrak Downeaster between Portland, ME and Boston several times and love the train.

We did the auto train with a family room. It was really nice! The kids sat during the day facing each other by the window and there were two other seating areas that converted to bunks at night. The bathroom was in the hall but very clean and only for two other rooms. DIning was really nice, the steward offered to bring us meals if we wanted him to. The food...not so great. Think microwave food..airline food. But it was fun to sit in the dining car and talk to people. Be prepared if you with only one or two people to have a stranger seated at your table. They did that when it got crowded.

I have actually taken the amtrak train from Delray Beach, Florida (near my home) to Sanford. We book coach seats and then buy a room when we board. The price to upgrade for the four hours was only $125 and included one meal (the ride is almost 4 hours). We stretch out on the beds, read, relax, have lunch/dinner, and the room includes a private bathroom. Amtrak sells the rooms because they know whos getting on where and if we disembark in Sanford they can clean the room when we leave before the next reservation boards.

A couple of questions

I have a train trip later this week--my first since I was a little girl a very long time ago. I have a roomette, so I know the meals are included, but I was wondering if you can get meals served in the roomette or if you have go to the dining car. If you have to get the food from the dining car or grill, can you take it back to your room?

How do you find out if a train is on time? I'm traveling on the Texas Eagle, not one of the northeast corridor trains. I looked at amtrakdelays.com, but it doesn't cover my train

Talking

glad to hear you are back riding the rails
You can take your meals 'to go' and bring them back to your roomette. For lunch one day we got the burgers to go and ate in our rooms. As for the delays-I believe I have the web address listed somewhere in this thread BUT if you checked that and your train wasn't listed I would just call the station you are leaving from and ask them about the train that day(and it would be wise to call them a little before and ask if it is usually running late or on time)

Have fun!

I'll be taking the Amtrak from Providence to FL, we have a connect at the NYC Penn station as well, is it difficult to find which train you are boarding at Penn Station?? I'm a little nervous about that lol.

Assuming you have time between trains, because you have a roomette, you can go to the Acela lounge at Penn Station. They'll let you know when your train's boarding and which track. It's very pleasant to wait there. Much nicer bathroom than the public restrooms at Penn Station. When we were there in December, an Amtrak employee took all of the passengers in the lounge to the gate when the track was announced, so we didn't have to wait in the line.

But even if you don't go to the lounge, they clearly post the track on a GIGANTIC board at least 15 minutes before departure.
