Two Nerds Do Disney World - FINAL Update 5/12

Hey everyone! Welcome aboard my 3rd TR! If you haven't already done so, I encourage you to visit my PTR for all the background info: Click Here

OK so lets get this show on the road!
(ETA: At the bottom of this post there are links to the updates so you don’t have to read all of the, um, “witty banter” as Buzz calls it, in between)

Wednesday - 02/27/08
I got out of work at 7pm and rushed home to start our packing. I had to go up to the attic to get our luggage down and that in itself was an adventure. First of all....my house has those pull down attic stairs, which essentially means a metal ladder screwed onto a 2 x 4 that hangs down from the ceiling. The roof of the house (like most homes) come to a point so when in the attic, you can't stand up straight in certain spots. There is no electricity up there so we have a utility light strapped to a 20 foot extension cord that you have to plug into the outlet in the bathroom at the bottom of the ladder. And there is no "real" floor. There is a layer of insulation (circa 1952) and some more 2 x 4's standing on end. So it pretty much looks like this: l l l l l all the way across, with insulation in between the spaces of the slats. My dad put some plywood planks down over the slats to give us something flat to stand on, except he didn't nail them down or anything and each one is about 1/4" thick so if you stand on it in between slats, the whole board feels like it's going to crack underneath you. A few years ago, my mom actually managed to fall (partially) through the floor so her lower half was dangling from the ceiling of her bedroom. It's hilarious to imagine and she didn't get too hurt, but there was a gaping hole in her ceiling for several weeks until someone could come out to fix it.

So anyway, here I am in Satan's Attic digging around for luggage. I found Lumar's and tossed it down the door/opening where I came up from, and then went back for mine.

Rule #1: Never throw your luggage down a flight of metal stairs.
Exhibit A:

Yes, there is a big chunk of plastic now missing off of my suitcase.

Here's my suitcase, packed and ready to go!

And yes, the Darkwing Duck shirt rocks your socks.

One of my goals for this trip was to not overpack. On almost every trip I have ever been on (Disney or not) I always end up bring a ton of stuff I never use, and a bunch of clothes I never wear. So I really tried to narrow it down to necessities on this one. Here's a pile of clothes that didn't make the cut:

And yes, I have Hello Kitty sheets and Winnie-the-Pooh blanket. There's also a Garfield blanket in there somewhere. Hey, I told you we're nerds! Lumar doesn't particularly care for the HK sheets but he just has to deal with it.

Around 10pm I had to go pick up Lumar from work, and when we got back around 10:30, I frantically rushed around trying to finish packing. Some people like it when their significant other helps them with packing. I am not "some people." I can't concentrate when he's in the room, and he is not, under any circumstances, allowed to pack his own suitcase. If I left it up to him, he would go with an entire suitcase full of electronics equipment and no clothes. So anyway, here I am, running around like an idiot trying to remember where the heck I left my list and trying to make sure I didn't cross off anything that I didn't actually pack. This is how Scout helped me pack - with a look of utter disapproval that only rabbits can give (for more Disapproving Rabbits, visit www.disapprovingrabbits.com)

"You're not going to try and pick me up again are you? God, just go on vacation already!"

And here is how Alex helped:

Priorities, Alex, priorities!!

The Flash was absolutely no better, and I swear that I did not pose him this way. He digs under the blanket and comes out the otherside, covering himself up!

OK so all packing was officially done by 11:30pm and it felt sooo good to know that I didn't have to try and do all of this tomorrow night!

Yay packing. At the risk of sounding like the princess of dense-you and Lumar both live with your parents, correct?

Dude, I live with my mom, no judgments here. For some reason I always thought you lived with your parents, and Lumar lived with his parents.

you started.

When I had a house we had an attic like that. I hated going up there.

your packed. you broke the luggage.

Cute rabbits. I used to watch rabbits for someone until she got dogs and got rid of the rabbits.

can't wait for more.

Update 3/15: Arrival Day!!!

Thurday the 28th was highly uneventful. We both went to work, came home, packed up the bunnies, dropped off the bunnies, came back home for luggage and drove out to my dad’s house. He and my step-mom live about 45 minutes from Bradley Airport, where we were flying out of so I can leave my car at their house while we’re gone and not have to pay for parking at the airport. We got to their house about 11:30pm and went right to sleep.

Forgotten Item # 1: Contacts. I always wear a pair, and bring an extra pair in case something happens, then I also bring my glasses just in case. Well, I packed the spare pair in my suitcase, but wore my glasses to my dad’s and left the pair I was supposed to have in my eyeballs, in a case on my desk at my house. So now I have to go through a week of vacation with one pair of contacts…hopefully I’ll make it!

Friday 2/29
The alarm went off at 4:30am and we were on our way to the airport at 5am. I slept in the car most of the way but was awake in time to notice my step-mom miss the exit. We still made it there by 6:15, printed out our boarding passes and checked our luggage. YAY! No over weight bags!

Now the hard part…security. Seriously, the security guards could makes nuns feel like they did something wrong. I took off my Mickey Crocs and put them, along with all of my other stuff into a plastic bucket on the conveyor belt then stepped through the metal detector. No beeping, so off I go to collect my stuff. Lumar on the other hand, gets through the detector and takes 3 steps, THEN the alarm starts beeping so they made him go back through the detector then patted him down. We collected all of our stuff, walked about 30 feet and he stops and says “wait, where’s my boarding pass?” ARE YOU KIDDING ME? I told him to check his pockets, he said he did. I told him to check them again and POOF! His boarding pass magically appeared in his right pocket. Crisis averted!

We walked for miles to the VERY END of the terminal because, as always, our gate was the very last one. I was much too tired to even pretend like I was going to read a book or play my Pokemon Diamond game for my Nintendo DS (see? Nerd!) so I took a nap for about half an hour. At 7:15am, the sun rose just high enough that it was burning a hole through my eyelids. I sat up, and asked Lumar why we hadn’t started boarding yet and he said that they just announced that the plane had been delayed. As if on cue, the plane pulled up to the gate almost right at that moment. The passengers unloaded and by 7:30 they had started loading all of us on. We finally took off at 8am and I fell asleep again, almost missing the snack portion of the flight! No food = not gud. I get very cranky when I haven’t eaten.

We landed shortly after 10 and hightailed it to the lower lever B side. The line for DME was already long, and I stood there for 20 minutes to check us in. As I was walking towards the red carpet, I felt a sharp pain on the top of my right foot. When we sat down on the ME bus, I took off my Croc to find…a BLISTER! Seriously, I have to be the only person to succeed in getting a blister from Crocs.

This was the only picture I got of the WDW Entrance. Sorry, I wasn’t prepared:

The bus dropped off people at OKW and SSR first, then dropped us off at POFQ. It was only 12:30pm but our room was all ready for us so we headed up. We were in building 1 on the second floor, towards the back of the building.

Here’s our room number:

I took some pics of the view from our room. It doesn’t look quite as pretty and colorful as it does in the warmer months when all the flowers and trees are in bloom, but it was still very nice and on the plus side, our allergies didn’t bother us one bit!

Of course, I never took any pictures of the actual room….so here are some more pics of the resort:

We went and unloaded our stuff then went back down to the food court (Sassagoula) for some lunch. I had a cheeseburger with fries, Lumar got a grilled chicken sandwich and we ordered 3 beignets (you can order three or six). I wasn’t sure what they were but a bunch of people on the DIS told me to make sure I tried them so we did. Just fried dough with powdered sugar, but they make them fresh right in front of you. SOO good!! We went back to the room and fell asleep for about ½ an hour. Our luggage arrived at 2:30pm and we went back to sleep until 6. So much for going to play Mini Golf like we had intended to do. We got up and changed into real clothes (much different than traveling clothes) and headed to DTD. We arrived about 7:15pm and made sure we got off on the PI side this time. We walked through some of the stores on the West Side until about 10 of 8, then headed back to the Planet Hollywood check-in desk for our 8pm reservation. I should mention that I left my camera in the room so I have no pics of our adventure this evening. For dinner I ordered the Crab Cakes and a BananaRama and Lumar had the Chicken Fajitas. Both were so good! I have no idea why people complain about this place! We have NEVER had a bad experience here.

After dinner we walked over to the Marketplace and spent $120 in World of Disney (on what, I have no idea but I saved almost all of our receipts – except for a couple here and there – so I’ll be able to tell you eventually). We went to the Pin Traders and Once Upon a Toy then headed back to POFQ, arriving back at our room about 11:30. I now had a blister on my left foot as well, same place as the other one just opposite foot, also from my Crocs. Did I mention that I only brought my Crocs and my Crocs Flip-Flops on this trip? Oh yeah, and in an effort to save space, I didn’t bring band-aids or Neosporin. Both of which I have brought on previous trips and never used. Now that I need them, of course, I don’t have them. I also seriously could have used some lotion for my hands and feet but I didn’t bring any of that either, assuming there would be some in the room. There wasn’t. Lumar also asked me for the nail clippers and I didn’t have those either. Remind me to NEVER pack lightly again.

Next up: Day 1 at Epcot!

Update 3/18: Day 2 – Magic Kingdom

Sunday 3/2
We woke up at 7:20 – yep, early today cuz we had a breakfast reservation at Crystal Palace 8:20am. Weather for today: Sunny and 80! Sadly, it took us (Lumar) half an hour to get ready so we didn’t leave the room until 7:50am. And of course, the one and only time we actually had to wait for a Disney Bus had to be today…We saw FOUR Animal Kingdom busses, and 2 MGM…er, sorry Hollywood Studios busses, before we finally got an MK bus – at 8:30!! By the time we had our bag checked, shoved our way through the mob of people, and checked in at Crystal Palace, it was 8:40am. Not as late as we have been for some ADR’s in the past, but I was so mad! Can we ever be on time??

So anyway, we checked in, waited about 5 minutes and then we were called in. As we were sitting down, Piglet and Eeyore were leaving our section, then they had to do that stupid parade, then Tigger finally came by.

Stupid parade…..

As we were getting up to leave, Pooh waved goodbye. Seriously, I really liked eating breakfast at the character meals because not a whole lot of people knew about them…the characters weren’t rushed and were able to come back to your table if you missed them. Not so much anymore. I’d rather save the money and have a good dinner, rather than rush to get out for breakfast in the morning. And that’s sad because breakfast is my favorite meal.

After we left CP, we headed into Adventureland. Here’s a view of CP from the bridge:

And the first thing you see as you cross over into Adventureland:

The first thing we did was the Swiss Family Robinson Treehouse. We had never been up there before and it was pretty cool! A bit too high up for my taste, and I hate it that people come running up the stairs behind you and rush you along, rather than just passing you. But I got some cool pics and it was something new for us:

Space from the top of the treehouse!

After the Treehouse, we went to Pirates then stopped at the Arribas Brothers where I (finally, after 3 trips of wanting) bought a crystal Simba and a crystal Thumper! Yes, I’m a girl, and a nerd…I like stuff like this!

We headed into Frontierland and stopped at Pecos Bill’s so SOMEONE (not me) could use the bathroom…I wish I was kidding when I said we were there for half an hour. And he didn’t even have any dairy!

We finally left and went and got fastpasses for Splash. Our return time was 1:15pm and it was only noon (man, these Disney Days go by FAST!) so we walked over to Liberty Square and rode the Haunted Mansion then we went back to Adventureland for lunch at El Pirata y El Perico. We never got to eat here before because it’s only open seasonally and apparently May, October, and December are not the right seasons. I got the 2 Taco’s meal and Lumar had the Taco Salad meal. Messy but YUMMY! I wish they were open more often! Sorry, no pics! I was too busy eating my food to remember to take pictures of it! We were still kind of hungry after we ate though…not SUPER hungry, but in need of something small and snackish….

Here’s a random shot of the Tiki Room for ya:

We went back to Splash and got to ride in the front! This ride it so fun! I’m glad we didn’t get soaking wet though. That’s an uncomfortable feeling.

After Splash, we hopped the train and took it into Toontown. Lumar grabbed a banana and I picked up a yogurt from the Fruit Market thingy next to the Barnstormer. We walked into Tomorrowland and got fastpasses for Space at 3pm…the return time was 5pm. Since we had some time to kill, we jumped on the TTA - I know this isn’t the most thrilling attraction in WDW, but I love it. When we got off of that, we went over to Buzz which had a 10 minute wait. Neither one of us is very good at this game, but we don’t have a lot practice. Lumar stilled whooped me: 62,600 to 18,100.

After both of those, we still had about an hour before our return time for Space so we walked back across the Hub and into Adventureland. The wait for Pirates was 25 minutes and we didn’t feel like waiting so we walked back to Tomorrowland (no wonder my feet hurt so bad!) and even though we were about 15 minutes early, the CM let us onto Space anyway. When we got off, I wanted some ice cream so we went back to Fantasyland where I got a sundae from Mrs. Potts. SO FREAKIN' GOOD!!!! And of course, Lumar got one too. Don’t worry, he regrets it later on….:Stir:

We got back on the train, rode it all the way around once, and then got off at Main Street. We decided to give Pirates another try and this time it said only 5 minute wait! How sad that strangers can ruin my excitement about a ride by disobeying the rules. How hard is this? NO FLASH PHOTOGRAPHY!!!

After Pirates, we went back to Liberty Square and got wristbands for Extra Magic Hours, walked onto Haunted Mansion one more time, and then walked back to Fantasyland. We picked up some of the secret pin packs and sat down at a bench to open then. It just so happens that we had a great view of Wishes, even though from our view point, half of the fireworks were on our left and half of them were on our right. It was kind of weird to see them this way, but kind of cool at the same time. Not the same effect as sitting in front of the castle, but since we never saw them this way before it was something new we experienced.

This one’s kinda blurry but still pretty:

Since SpectroMagic was winding it’s way up through the center of the park, we went back through Liberty Square and into Frontierland where we wandered around the Pin Traders store for a while until Spectro was over and the crowd on Main Street started thinning out. We left the park around 10pm and hit the sack at 10:30.

Why is the parade stupid? I haven't ever been here so I don't have a clue.

YA!! What she said! I totally agree with you. Some people just don't feel the need to follow rules. We should get one of those really cheap cameras with a really bright flash on it. Just to keep for "just in case" in our purses. If someone feels the need to use their flash on the ride, pull out ole reliable and say "pardon me" to the rule breaker and FLASH THEM!! Say see, this is why we don't use flash on this ride, it is rude to other guests.

Just a thought!

I experience road rage as well. The therapy is helping.

I have to laugh at your bathroom travels. Whenever my DH and I go anywhere I always joke that we do a restroom tour of the park. It seems he can't pass one without going in! At least they are clean at Disney.

Your pictures are great, and I love hearing from a fellow nerd.

There is no wait because the ride isn't fun anymore. They need to go back to the original.

It’s fun to me!! “im-AAAAAAAAA-gin-AAAA-tion, im-AAAAAAAAA-gin-AAAA-tion!!! A dream can be a dream come true! With just one spark….from me and you!” Come on! Just as good as the IASW theme!!

To mess with your head!!
Pretty much… .

I don't think they had intended on it staying at WDW. So they probably just did a "for now" kind of thing. I think it was supposed to go when all the other California stuff went. It is now just too popular and if they take it out, we will rebel!

Well, it’s time to fix it! It bothers me!

You should have said hello!!
Eh, I didn’t really like her that much…..

Thanks for sharing!!!
Anytime!

This is me too. It's called Shoppers Remorse. Now I don't wait. I just go buy it.

I haven’t graduated to that yet….I always walk around with it the first time around, and then on our second day at each park, if I remember it and I still want it, I’ll get it.

You tried, that's what matters. I'm glad to hear Strawberry was just as bad as Mango!

So gross

Purdy flower!
Thanks! I love taking pics of the flowers! They’re always so pretty in WDW

MORE???????? Do you collect them or do you really play? The boys used to collect them. I don't think they knew how to play the game. Now they have a big box of them. They gave them up like 7 YEARS AGO!!!! You aren't nerds, you are just kids!!!

Oh it gets worse….it's mainly Lumar...he insists on buying them. He knows how to play, I have no idea. He insists that we are going to learn to play really well so we can play against each other. I say it ain't gonna happen. And yes, we are kids…but NERDY kids!

LOVED all the pics. I have to go check out your next update.

Thanks! Hope you’re enjoying my TR so far!

It’s terrible isn't it? We’ve been there enough times to know which bathrooms are OK to use and which we prefer to stay away from. We don’t have a rating system like Jordan…mental notes serve the purpose. My brother is just as bad. The year I went Lumar, his brother, and MY brother…we didn’t get anything done because they had to check out every single bathroom we came across. By the end of the week, they were checking them off on the park maps so they knew which ones they went to already! We hit EVERY bathroom in AK and MK!

Why is the parade stupid? I haven't ever been here so I don't have a clue.

Because all the kids get up and follow the characters around the restaurant, while the Winnie the Pooh song plays, and all the parents are waving their green napkins in the air to make it look like trees in the Hundred Acre Wood. It’s cute if you’ve got little kids, but to me it just creates noise and havoc. The servers can’t walk around to take care of their tables because there are characters and mass amounts of small children running amok. And they do this at the Ohana breakfast too but the walkways are bigger so it’s not as crowded feeling…and there is no napkin waving.

A girl in a tank top and shorts??

you’re silly! I meant the pretty view, not the girl who was underdressed! It was still chilly in the morning, even if it was going to be 80 later in the day

Isn't it neat in there. I so want a treehouse!!
Right now, ANY kind of house would be OK with me. As long as it’s mine and none of my relatives live with me

Again, thanks for sharing!
You’re welcome!

I like that idea! That’s a teensy bit nicer than my idea which is to fake a sneeze and accidentally knock their camera out of their hands into the Pirate Water. I have really bad road rage too….everyone should drive like me and then there would be no problems!

No spectro?? You flew through that day. Did you get Photopass pics?
No we didn’t watch it tonight but we come back at the end of week. Maybe we watched it then….. And yes, that day did go by quickly. And yes we have PP Pics but I haven’t dug out the CD yet…. I’ll find it now…

So, when you going again????

funny you should ask. I spent yesterday doing all kinds of financial research to see if we could swing it again in October for MNSSHP, but we really need to move into our own place so that’s taking precedence. If we can find a place, and still have time/money to go back in October then we will, but if not, it will have to wait until next year.

Great TR! My brothers (and me to an extent! ) love Pokemon too! They always go insane at Mitsukoshi. I love those stuffed pokemon too, but they're so expensive for something so little!

I don't think you two are nerdy at all. You both seem fun. Can't wait to read more!
