There is a graveyard right outside the church

We cruised around this historic district a little and then decided to head out.

We really wanted to find a bar, just a bar, near the historic district and Merchant's square but we came up empty.

What I didn't know then, but know now, is that we could have gone into the Cheese Shop, which is right next to Fat Canary, and ordered wine by the glass and brought it outside to sit at the table. The selections were limited to house wines, but it would have done the trick.

Instead, we went back to the car and drove to a place called "New Town". We saw a bar/restaurant in there and they were having a special. All their bottled microbrews were $3.

So we ordered a couple beers and even though it was still on the early side (5pm maybe) we decided to order a couple burgers because they had a 1/2 price special. So we basically each had a nice size burger and two microbrews a piece for about $20. Quite the bargain after our previous evening.

We entertained the thoughts of hitting the outlets but ultimately decided to go back to the room, watch TV, and go to bed early. I think I fell asleep on the coach by 8pm.

Here's my yummy burger with sweet potato fries. I love sweet potato fries!

Tuesday April 3, 2012

Since I was in bed by about 9:30pm I was up pretty early today. I tried to watch some TV in the bedroom (after I woke up the first time), but I just couldn't keep my eyes open. I guess that timeshare presentation wore me out!

I went for a run but it was pretty cool this morning and I was actually cold. BRRRRRRRR!

A picture of the closed pool

I did take a few pictures of the room as we were packing up.

Sorry all these pictures have been so crappy, but all the pictures in the past two updates were taking with my phone.

Wonderful wonderful pictures of the campus.

The picture of your dinner didn't get posted. Sounds like a nice find though.

Our plan today........

The Jamestown Settlement

Fountains at the Entrance

This is the hall than runs along the museum portion of the building. It is divided into 10 year sections.

We decided to go outside first because we heard there was a tour getting ready to start. When we got outside we saw this.

Queue scary music here!!!!!!!!!!

School Kids!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I remembered it was Tuesday, it was spring, and we were about to encounter school field trips - Lots of them! Oh brother!

Denny and I decided not to wait for the tour. We set off by ourselves.

We were about to explore a Powhatan Indian reservation.

I had a little trouble believing that the Powhatan Indians wore glasses

Canoe

We didn't spend a lot of time with the Powhatan Indians because the school kids quickly started to descend upon us.

We walked down to the river. This is a view through the trees of the James River Ferry

When we got to the boat replicas it was obvious that some school groups had beat us there. Figures!

We kept on walking to the end of the pier

A lot of learning going on here....

Here is the voyage and arrival to Virginia

The three boats

They had a kid helping to do this

The smallest of the boats had no visitors so Denny and I went on

Denny struck up a lengthy conversation with this gentleman, a retired lawyer from DC, a sailor, and a reenactor.

He told us that the boats actually do get sailed periodically. When they do sail its only for a couple weeks at a time. The ship replicas are actually one of the biggest draws for the settlement.

Artsy shot

Hey - look - there's the ferry!

Aren't they cute? Of course they are. There's only two of them, not a whole class. :shudder:

We went back inside to watch the movie. This movie was actually really good and a little sad because it told the story of the first settlers. What brave people. All I can say is WOW!

I wasn't allowed to take pictures in the museum but I took some in the main hall.

Sorry - I skipped a few years!

I took this picture with no flash through the glass so technically I didn't take any pictures "inside" the museum.

After we throughly explored the museum we decided to leave.

Bye JS

Another view of the fountains and flags on the way out.

There was a state flag for every state.

They have a plaque like this for every state.

If you ever go visit the Jamestown Settlement remember that if you save your receipt you can add on the Yorktown Victory Center for another $4 a person. Cost for the JS $16.

Here's where we made a spontaneous decision. We really weren't sure what we were going to do next. I was going to suggest starting the drive home via Yorktown, but Denny really wanted to cause that James River ferry. After all, it IS free.

So we got on as the last car

You're taking me back to gradeschool Mary Ellen, YIKES! I remember going to this place now, and although I remember being impressed, I definitely appreciate it more now. Perhaps a trip back someday.

Love the picture of the birds, very beautiful.

Here we go!

No drinking on the ferry

Looking back

A family at the back of the boat decided to feed the seagulls

The name of our ferry

This is also Jamestown, but its the part that belongs to the national park system and this admission was $10.

Passing ferry

When we got to the other side we needed to come up with a plan, which involved a map. Fortunately I had one. We decided, on the spur of the moment, to drive to a town called Smithfield. From there we could drive towards Virginia Beach and home.

There are some more historic homes you can tour along the way to Smithfield, but I was sort of tapped out with listening.

When we got to Smithfield we unfortunately met a detour that took us past the historic district and we honestly weren't sure how to turn around and get back there. Too bad. We did stop at small little touristy area on the outskirts of town.

We walked around a bit and then headed back to the Eastern Shore.

We made another spontaneous decision on the way home. We decided to take a little side tour to............

Yup - Here's a place we had never been before.

We just decided to pick a restaurant off the GPS so we ended up at this townie bar

Where I had a couple of these

Out the window

We met the nicest girl at the bar. She was a safety engineer at NASA at Wallops Island. We had a long conversation with her about her job, about working at NASA, and about her move back to Colorado. Before we knew it daylight was fading. She recommended another seafood restaurant for dinner and off we went.

We had a couple beers

and then enjoyed some seafood

Denny suggested we actually drive to the beach before we finished the drive home. I was tired and stuffed full of food, plus we still had a 2.5 hour drive in front of us, but I agreed. I'm so glad. The reward was the most spectacular sunset ever.

This is the view over the ocean

I had a few friends who went to W&M and I visited them a couple times. It's cool to see your photos from there.

Hahaha, had to laugh at the little elementary school group! I think in like 4th grade I had a field trip to Jamestown as well. Local! Hahaha. These pictures are bringing back a lot of memories!

WOW... those sunset pictures are just beautiful! AMAZING!!! It sounds like yall had such a nice little weekend trip.

Well, I thought that the bridge pictures at William and Mary were amazing...and then I saw those sunset pics. WOW. Those are gorgeous.

I never realized there was so much to do in the Williamsburg area. We will definitely be heading that way in a couple of of years, once Max is just a little bit older. The Jamestown settlement looks really interesting. Fun fact: it was my dream for years to be reenactor at a living history museum. I ended up majoring in history instead!
