I finally got caught up, but now have forgotten most of what I wanted to say. Figures.

Loved the photos of the area - so pretty. I remember when I went to visit a friend at William & Mary, he took me to one of those "fancy" restaurants for dinner the night I arrived, and I was not dressed appropriately. Oops. Good food, though.

I remember visiting the battlefields with another friend back in college too, he was big on battlefields. I do remember that after a day of it, I was like, there are only so many canons I can see in a field before I get bored. But I love the history and character of the area and Colonial Williamsburg.

I remember going to BG as a kid - can't wait to see how much has changed since then. I remember them having some pretty awesome roller coasters back in the day and that they didn't last 45 seconds either!

Can't wait to hear about HHI. I've always wanted to go there and your teaser pics are definitly cementing that thought.

We've enjoyed Busch Gardens a few times when we visit the in-laws. It's been a while, but I actually rode the Loch Ness a number of years ago. I think it was before Paige was born, so 9 years? Gave me such a headache, I was spent for the rest of the day. That's the last "big" coaster I've been on. It is a really pretty park - not too big either.

I saw a couple of those "fancy" places. We did not eat there, but I did find a really good casual place that I would highly recommend - coming up!

I am the SAME way. I can only take so many factoids and then I go in overload. Denny loves that stuff and could listen for hours, but not me. That may have been why I didn't want to tour the battlefield at Yorktown. I had just listened to 2 plus hours of naval information.

The first time I was there (20 yrs ago) there were only two coasters. When I went with the kids in 03 or 04 there were 4. Since then they changed out the big bad wolf and built the griffon. I loved the big bad wolf and was sorry to see if go. I think they are probably building some kind of crazy launch coaster in its place.

Well, I hope my real pictures will increase your desire even more. I just hope my hard drive will hold all the new ones!

Well - here's a spoiler - I did NOT ride the Loch Ness Monster for exactly that reason. The other coasters are so much smoother. I almost did go over there and I think one of the cast members (or whatever they are called) talked me out of it, reminding me it was way too jerky!

The park does have excellent landscaping. Really lovely!

Absolutely! My only regret is that I didn't take my kids sooner. I think they would have really enjoyed it when they were preschool age. I thought they would have been too young. I was so wrong.

ME, I don't believe that there is a battlefield at Jamestown. The one house that is really cool was closed a couple of years ago. It was the Carter mansion, Williamsburg owns it & closed it down due to monetary problems. It is fully furnished. There is also a site of an early massacre of settlers, museum & graves of said victims. All of these items were found on the estate. Tis a pity that it has been closed.
Jamestown the recreation has an entry fee, but the actual site doesn't. It may since it has been a few years since we've been there. Also, there is the site of the earliest glass factory in the colonies. They still blow the glass there & sell it. Makes for a lovely souvenier.

Got Ghosts? Part II

So here goes - I'm being ambitious and updating again about Williamsburg because I really want to get this TR done before we leave for HHI. It's not going to happen, but I still want to see how far I can get by Saturday night.

I'm a little upset, though, because my phone pictures are not uploading correctly into photobucket and I sure as heck don't want to put anymore pictures on my hard drive. Grrrrrrrh! Hope I can get my dinner pictures to upload.

So, when I left off we had just finished touring Yorktown and made the unpleasant discovery that there would be NO Ghost tours in historic Williamsburg that evening because of a lack of electricity. I mean, who knew that a power outage would be responsible for canceling ghost tours. In our opinion, no power would only add to the authenticity of the tour. I suppose its another case of Safety First.

WE got back to the condo shortly after 4pm. When we got out of the car we could hear music coming from the pool area......and......then......the sounds of Karaoke! But not good karaoke - BAD karaoke! I am very sensitive to people singing out of tune and this was just abrasive. We ran inside, slamming the door behind us. There we checked the resort schedule. Sure enough - pool party with karaoke until 4:30. OK then. What to do? Well, you guessed it - time for an adult beverage and THEN the pool. We timed it just as the last singer (who happened to be a child) was up. Who can be annoyed by a child's singing. Not even super critical me!

No one checked our cards as we went it. We grabbed a couple towels and found a couple chairs by the adult pool. That's right - an ADULT pool! The other pool was the family pool. Gotta love that!

Ahhhhhhhh......Even my short, stubby, seriously in need of a pedicure, feet were happy!

I was in full resting mode as I took pictures FROM my chair.

Here's the pool without my feet.

And another angle

And the entrance way

After Chillin' and swimming, I set off to take a few more pics.

The multipurpose (aka family) pool

Fountains

The ever essential pool bar

A few more views

A view of the grounds from the edge of the fence

We spent about an hour or so at the pool. I would have liked to stay longer, but there was the all important decision of food looming ahead of us. The one thing I did not want was to wait in a restaurant line. That alone was motivation to get my a$$ in gear and up off the chaise. I thought if we could at least be seated somewhere by 6:45 or 7pm, we would not be gracing the front stoop of a restaurant for any appreciable length of time.

So we went back to the condo to shower, change, and peruse Williamsburg tourist books looking for a place to eat.

And there among the chain restaurants, barbecue joints, and Italian mom and pop places, was divine inspiration in the form of Food For Thought.

http://www.foodforthoughtrestaurant.com/

I remember passing this place the previous evening and I liked the name. Well, I would probably like any name with "food" in it, so that's not surprising. I did a quick search on trip advisor and found that is was rated #3 out of 180 Williamsburg restaurants. Well - all righty then - it was a go! The only thing I didn't do in my haste was try to find a %10 off coupon in one of those touristy books. I know they exist. How do I know? Well, I over heard our waitress apply it to another customer's bill. That was after she handed him her business card and struck up a lengthy conversation while flaunting her culinary attributes. Yes - you guessed it - she was studying to be a chef and the patron was in from Denver on business and ...yada...yada.....yada.....I heard her tell him she would apply the coupon (which he didn't have) in an attempt to earn herself some brownie points.

Ok - enough about her. Seriously, over hearing all that was probably the only unpleasant thing that happened during the meal. This place was freaking fantastic at a very reasonable price.

So we started with a microbrew..... (cell phone picture alert.......)

I don't know which one, but here's what the menu says about the microbrews:

We were proudly the first non-smoking restaurant in Williamsburg and have a wonderful bar area serving draft microbrews from Williamsburg Alewerks and Dogfishhead; along with other seasonal drafts.

I'm thinking I either went with the Alewerks or something seasonal. Doesn't really matter - it was good.

And, in case you don't remember the name of the restaurant, why here it is on the glass.....

Here is a lovely bartender serving up the good stuff

For dinner I had the beet salad

It doesn't look all that pretty, but it was darn good and had plenty of beets!

My entree was the crab-a-bella

I can't copy the menu description, but here's my version - yummy crabcake, covered with provolone, sitting in a portabella mushroom served over jasmine rice and bruschetta tomatoes

This was seriously heaven on a plate. I feel pretty certain I had some leftovers.

Here's Denny's meal

I think he must have had some type of flounder or tilapia special. It had a nice whole wheat type breading and note the mashed sweet potatoes and asparagus. Denny probably didn't love his meal as much as I loved mine, but he never does. I always ask the waitress or waiter which I should pick. I usually give them two or three choices and I always go with what they recommend. Denny just picks the special. I don't think he tries hard enough!

We skipped dessert or maybe he got some cheesecake or something. I know I was way too full and I needed to go walk off dinner.

I highly recommend this place if you ever visit W-burg. The only things that made it less than a perfect experience where (1) the waitress trying to network at the table next to ours which was literally 8 inches away, and (2) the manager coming over to ask how everything was with the expressed intention of clearing off our plates and bringing our check in 20 seconds flat. It just felt a little forced/rushed.

But I suspect that they are used to crowds and they need to keep it moving. Just as well, because I really did want to take a walk through Williamsburg in the dark.

Continued.........

Continued.......

We drove over to colonial Williamsburg and found a convenient public parking lot on Gloucester Street (which is where the Ghost tours normally meet).

I decided that even though it was pretty darn dark, I would just "try" to take a few pictures starting with this one.....

We were right next to the William & Mary bookstore so we went inside. They obviously had electricity. This was more like a public bookstore than a college bookstore, but perhaps a lot of the bigger university bookstores are like that. The actual coursework books were way in the back of the store. In the front of the store were gads and gads of W&M clothes and other articles.

The merchandise was displayed so nicely that I really had to fight the urge to buy something. I thought about getting something for Nicholas, but decided it was best to buy him college stuff when he actually went to tour colleges.

I mean - really - doesn't this window just make you want to shop there?

For the younger W&M wannabe

A whole display of Vera Bradley

I'm sure there is no shortage of expendable income when it comes to W&M students, parents, and alum. Smart merchandising, if you ask me.

Right next door was a Christmas shop

And a silver shop

Jewelry anyone? Love this......

Candy/peanut shop

See - there really IS a little bit of Disney where ever you go

Sunny Seed Drops????

I had never heard of Nehi softdrinks, but apparently Denny had from when he was a kid

The Cheese Shop was closed

We went in one more shop where I actually tried to "shop" and I didn't take any pictures. While I looked around Denny went outside to call his brother. Denny's mom is in her early 90's and she has frequent bouts of congestive heart failure. I think she had just been in and out of the hospital.

I also paused at one point to call Nicholas. I made a point of calling him every morning and every evening to make sure he was home from evening soccer practice safely.

So what did I buy? Nothing! I guess I was taking the budget conscious thing too seriously. But, never fear - I did buy something the next day!

When we got outside I asked Denny if he would mind if we walked down Gloucester Street a bit.

Needless to say, it was quite dark with just a few street lamps and I have no idea how they were lit.

Gotta love this saying......

Can you believe that even in the poor light and despite the uneven sidewalks, we meandered straight to the end of Gloucester Street. I know doris will know which building is at the end of Gloucester Street. I'm too lazy to look it up right now. All I can tell you is that building looked "spooooook keeeeeeey" It was so dark I couldn't get a picture of it. All I could get was a picture of the outside gate

On the way back I developed a fascination with taking pictures of the street lamps

And these were seriously the only lighting around

In looking at all these street lamps, I think perhaps the electricity had been restored. I see no other explanation.

A couple things I noticed on Gloucester street:

1. There were TONS of W&M students using this road as a jogging path. I was shocked. But they just kept coming in pairs, triplets, and alone. And it was dark. I guess this must be a main night time jogging spot because of the lack of traffic. What a healthy bunch of students.

2. There was one large group on a tour. I asked Denny if we could just ease our way closer and closer until we could hear what they were saying. Of course, Mr "follow the rules at all times" wanted nothing to do with this strategy. My conclusion - I think this was a tour group from W&M, but I guess I will never know.

Well, you all know how much I wanted to see a ghost or an orb or an aberration or something.

Check this out.......

Picture # 1

Don't mind if I do, Josiah!

Picture # 2

See it???? There in the tree??? That round, unnatural glow of light???? There were no lights in that tree.

Is it? Could it Be????? An Orb!!!!!!!

The more I look at it, the more I think it is. Call me crazy! I looked at a bunch of orb pictures taken on ghost tours and it looks like the real deal to me.

Of course, Denny, being the pragmatist, said "no way". I suppose there could be some logical explanation, like my flash reflected off something in the tree. But for now, I am going by the opinion that this is an authentic orb.

I stand corrected - this street is actually Duke of Gloucester street, not Gloucester street!

My bad!
And my last picture for the night.......ta da........

the ever exciting price list for Colonial Williamsburg tickets. Just add a couple more dollars to those prices if you are planning to go in 2012!

It was close to 10pm by the time we finished our walk. Denny was really a good sport about it, since we walked much further than he wanted to.

When we got back to the condo we decided to use the hot tub again! And then it was off to dream land.

Up Next - A Day at Busch Gardens!

I was so curious about it that I looked it up.

I originally read about it on this site http://www.nps.gov/york/planyourvisit/things2do.htm

COLONIAL NATIONAL HISTORICAL PARK PASS
Fees
$10 - 7 Days Park Entrance
Details:
Children 15 and under are free.

The seven-day pass fee is per adult and allows unlimited admittance to all facilities and Ranger Guided or Living History public tours for seven consecutive days at both Historic Jamestowne and Yorktown Battlefield during regular operating hours.

I see now how I misread it thinking it said historic jamestown and yorktown battlefields when it really said Historic Jamestown AND Yorktown battlefield. Makes sense now. See - I told you I need to go back. I do remember seeing the glass blowing at Jamestown (years ago) and thought it was so cool. Children 16 ad under free - that's awesome!

The Carter Mansion sounds very cool. I do see your point about the theme park taking away some of the historic sites thunder. I think most people are like me - they like a little bit of history, but not history overload. I am one of those, so the theme park breaks it up for me because it requires no thought.

Doris - I think I need you to write an itinerary for my next visit because you really know your stuff!

Glad Denny was there to protect you from that orb!

That is sort of funny that a lack of power would cancel a ghost tour. Boo.

(Pun intended. )

Speaking of ghosts, I totally believe that's a ghost in your picture! That doesn't look like one of those orbs that's just an amorphic smudge that also might be a smudge on your camera lens.

Not that that ever happened to me.

Can't wait to see your Busch Gardens recap!

You're right - a lot of those orbs just look like smudges or water drops. This is a real glow! :

Love all the W-burg pictures. So beautiful. Your dinner looks delicious and the resort looks like it was really, really nice, too.
