When someone has a loss/what to do

Bumping this thread as I find it interesting and with Christmas approaching many bereaved families will be feeling the loss even more intensely. Here is a wonderful piece of writing I came across a few months ago, not long after my husband passed away. Every word in it is true. For anyone...

    Can anyone interpret this dream?

For anyone missing your father today...

 The only thing I would say to you both is that, if it's any consolation, many people don't find any comfort at all at the grave. I feel nothing, absolutely nothing, when I'm at my husband's graveside. My Dad and brother are buried in the same cemetery and I feel nothing at their...

For anyone missing your father today...

My day just got better! The most amazing thing just happened. The day that Diarmuid passed away I gently took his wedding ring off his finger and later that day I attached it to a gold chain and wore it to the funeral services. But the day after the funeral I had a red raw ring around my neck...

For anyone missing your father today...

Yes, I'd like to think we could do that in the future, just not this year. Thank you.

For anyone missing your father today...

The cemetery is where they go to talk to him and put flowers on his grave. It makes them feel closer to him. It's way way too soon to 'celebrate' by making favourite foods etc. That's not even on our radar right now. It's too raw and they need to grieve, not deny that it happened. But thanks for...

For anyone missing your father today...

My kids first Father's Day without their precious Dad. We put flowers on his grave and on my own Dad's grave too. So sad to see my 8 year old standing in the rain looking at her Daddy's grave. I really hated this day. :(

    'Sin' Tax On Unhealthy Foods?

They've been doing that here for a long time. There are three rates of VAT (Value Added Tax) here. Necessary items such as vegetables, rice etc. are at 0%. Things like crackers (someone decided that while they're not a luxury you can survive without them, lol) are at approx 13% and the highest...

    British words vs. American words

I never got that one. Why do people ask for a check, in the U.S.? A check is the thing you pay with so I don't understand why you're asking the restaurant for one. lol!

Why do some people have to be so mean?

I'm so sorry. I hate her and I don't even know her. Perhaps your son could suggest to her that they both meet with the supervisor together, something like "it seems you're not very happy with my work so maybe we could have a meeting with x to work out these issues?" It would be interesting to...

"A happy marriage is hard work" - agree or disagree?

Yes, no doubt about it. Marriage takes a lot of work. Anything worth doing requires effort, focus and sacrifice. But when it's all over and you (or your spouse) are left to carry on alone you will be so glad that you put in that effort.

    What Would You Think?

There's something truly pathetic about a person who publicly declares on Facebook that they're going to start deleting some 'friends' on their page because of 'blah blah blah'. If it was directed at you then you need to ignore it completely. She sounds very immature and a total drama queen...

Read any books lately that would be a good beach read?

Joanna Trollope is a great English writer and almost any of her books (with the exception of her last two) would make great beach reads. In particular, Other People's Children and Marrying the Mistress.

    Bear eats convicted murderer

Aw, the poor bear. He saw an opportunity and took it. Totally natural. As for the scummy murderer, shame he wasn't eaten by a bear much sooner.

    Acid reflux, gerd sufferers, help!!!

Ask your doctor to do a liver blood test - this will show your liver enzyme levels. The reason I mention it is because tightness in the chest and indigestion can be symptoms of liver disease including gallbladder disease, hepatitis and worse. I don't want to frighten you but I know that those...

    My buddy

I agree completely. That's exactly the way I read the OP's post too. OP, well done on taking the dogs back when it was clear they were lonely and missing you. You tried Plan A and now it's on to Plan B. They're gorgeous dogs who clearly got wind of the fact that you're moving close to Disney...

'I apologize' vs 'I'm sorry' regarding a death

 I lost my wonderful husband back in January too. I know the pain you're going through. There's nothing like it. I'm going through the angry stage recently.... well it's more like the 'rage' stage really! I'll be blunt, saying "I apologize for your loss" is really just plain stupid...
