Broke down and gave DC a phone

:thumbsup2 From the forum Description: Several have not been friendly and no rule was broken by posting this story which was a backpedaling of an earlier stance I had taken. We believe that money is earned and not given which is why we are requiring our child reimburse us for the cost we...

Broke down and gave DC a phone

The class was $85 Shoes were $25 Ref kit, bag, flags. Whistle, yellow and red cards, game score card, coin, bag and watch were $91 Our agreement is DC pays back half of everything earned until what we have invested is paid back. It isn't about not having the money for it, it is to make DC...

Broke down and gave DC a phone

Who said we were making DC pay for swim or soccer? I said we were making DC pay us back for those classes which are required to earn income. Totally reasonable in our neck of the woods. Two of DC's friends have similar arrangements with their parents.

Broke down and gave DC a phone

No nickel and diming at all. Giving my child the basics. Until this year, other than school and some friend's houses, DC has never been where I am not. I am at all soccer and swim practices. A phone was NOT a necessity. In the first post, I mentioned I would not be staying at a soccer tournament...

Broke down and gave DC a phone

I have mentioned two classes that are needed for DC to work. Refereeing and babysitting are part time jobs which can pay $12-15 an hour game and babysitting around here is $10-20 an hour. Unnecessary burden, give me a break. We paid for our school and have invested hours in time, money and...

Broke down and gave DC a phone

Nope, we found that contract at Clark Howard's website and used it as the basis for ours which DC and we signed. This is what works in our family.

Broke down and gave DC a phone

IMHO, this is the exact entitlement I am talking about. Who said we required our child to pay us back for everything? We provide an amazing home life, wonderful vacations, swim, travel soccer. We do however require DC to pay us back for certain things that will earn money. We believe DC should...

Broke down and gave DC a phone

My friend said to watch out for texts eating all of the money so I went with unlimited. Data is not needed at this time so this is just a trial. Though DC does not have an iPhone a contract that borrowed from this one was signed by SO, I and DC...

Broke down and gave DC a phone

DC can AR a game at the age level DC plays and can center a younger age level. This will mostly be a tournaments as DC plays on a travel soccer team and most Saturdays and Sundays are filled with games, but DC can go ref at another team's games.

Broke down and gave DC a phone

Years of experience of dealing with peers and kids whose parents "gave them" only the best and the resultant entitlement spoiled attitude of those peers and kids. Because as a ref, DC earns money for every game. To help teach gross versus net profit, we are helping DC understand that the tools...

The kids EARNED A Lexus? Ok. And there are people judging that a kid HAD to have data so it is perfectly acceptable for me to have an opinion on what kind of car another parent buys their child.

There is no minimum age for an R9 soccer ref badge, but our state requires kids to be at least 11 before taking the class. We have fronted the money for the class as well as the ref kit, timer watch and shoes, but DC will have to pay us back for all of it.

Broke down and gave DC a phone

Yes because we have EARNED enough to be able to afford one through hard work and sacrifice. Never said SHE got her children those cars, I said her kid's friends. And I do think it is wrong to get a child such an extravagant type of first vehicle.

Broke down and gave DC a phone

What does late model have to do with anything? As far as reliable, it is more the network than the phone anyway. I have an iPhone 3S and the call quality on DC's phone is far easier to understand. As far as we are concerned DC does not need DATA while working, the phone is just that a...

Broke down and gave DC a phone

DC stands for Dear Child. I had been against getting DC a phone, but relented. I am grandfathered into unlimited data. Adding a phone for a family member would take away my unlimited data. I also feel that DC does not need data and talk and text would be sufficient. I wanted a separate line...

Broke down and gave DC a phone

DC passed soccer referee class and has been asked to babysit for several families on the street. No way I am sitting at a field all day and most friends do not have home phones (though I think one of the couple should leave their phone at home for an emergency!). Had a GSM quad band unlocked...

Who else is getting their kid ready for their first year of college?

She published a blog of the top ten things to send to college. Her son is openly gay and going off to college for the first time. I found it interesting about the comments about that one "Suggestion".

Who else is getting their kid ready for their first year of college?

Two friends of mine are sending their respective son and daughter off to college. Included in their must haves are condoms. You should see the comments on their Facebook wall.
