6 year old drowns on Carnival Cruise

ITA. I found it disturbing how hard it is to keep an eye on your kid in the pool due to the way it is configured and how many kids are in it. Unless you sit right on the edge, the fact that it is recessed means that you really can't see your child at all. Luckily, we cruised to Alaska and it...

Activities for kids outside of kids clubs.

There are a lot - depending on age. We did towel folding and several cartoon drawing sessions. My kids loved the quiz shows (Disney trivia or others) and karaoke. They also enjoyed just playing foosball or basketball at the end of the ship.

    Food Allergies and DCL

I've found them to be very careful about food allergies - in some cases, annoyingly vigilant. As others have said, you will want to note it on your reservation. You can do this by calling. Once you do that, your servers will know and will be able to assist you with the menu. At the buffet...

What's so great about Mendenhall Glacier.

What Princess Shmoo said - it's the only one you can drive to. That means that you don't have to take a helicopter ride to get up close to it. Pretty key for people like me who won't do that with my family on vacation.

    HELP! Last minute Alaska packing

Sorry - forgot your last question - I used the hairdryer on board and it was perfectly fine.

    HELP! Last minute Alaska packing

We took the Wonder to Alaska in July and the weather was beautiful. No rain, cool in the morning in Skagway, but beautiful in Juneau and Ketchikan. I took: jeans tank tops long-sleeve t-shirts a fleece jacket an unlined windbreaker a hat gloves The coldest day was Tracy Arm...

    Alaska Cruise Info

    1) Hotel recommendations. We're planning on arriving the day before the cruise- maybe 2 days before (never been to Canada), and would like some ideas on where to stay. As another poster suggested, the Pan Pacific is right by the terminal. But there are lots of other options. We stayed at a...

    Kids on August Alaska cruise??

Well, our school started today - 8/27. So, we *could* have taken the 8/18 cruise, but we took the 7/4 cruise instead.

Is the fish good? Are the salads good?

I live near the coast and I thought most of the fish was perfectly acceptable. In fact, the tuna tartare appetizer was delicious. Most of the smoked salmon items were very good too. The only inedible meal I had was swordfish. It was dry, over white rice and with a bland sauce. Awful.

    Coats/Jackets in Alaska

Agree with layers and rain gear. This summer was unusually warm and dry. We went the week of July 4 and it was sunny and warm in most places except Tracy Arm. I mostly wore jeans, cotton tank top, long sleeve t-shirt, fleece jacket and an unlined rain jacket. I had a hat and gloves for...

Vancouver - What time do they start boarding

We registered for the earliest boarding time we could get - maybe 11:30? But we heard that boarding goes fast in Vancouver and to arrive at the port much earlier. We left our hotel around 10, but it was Canada Day, so the traffic was heavy. I'd say we got into the port terminal around 10:40...

What to include in my carry on bag?

Well, we planned to swim, so in addition to swimsuits and coverups we had: all medications kindle/ipad a couple of large water bottles to keep in our room fridge (all beverages must be carried on and unopened) camera

What Surprised You Once You Were Aboard?

I was surprised at how teeny-tiny the pool was. It was insanely crowded with kids on our cruise and I can't even imagine what it would be like on a warm-weather cruise (we cruised to Alaska). I was also surprised at how it seemed like no one was jerk-y on the cruise. I don't mean the CM's...

Suggestions for things to do in Alaskan ports with little ones

My apologies, I see you might be looking for activities other than ship excursions. In addition to fishing in Ketchikan, there is a huge candy store. I think there is also a museum. I found the Mendenhall Glacier center pretty cool - you can drive up to it. It's a small place, but there...

Suggestions for things to do in Alaskan ports with little ones

How old are they? We saw the lumberjack show in Ketchikan - that's easy for little ones to do. We also took the railroad in Skagway (not the round-trip one - that's too long, but the one where you take the train out and catch a bus back). If your kids like trains it could be fun. I've...

What's the first thing you do after boarding?

We went to the buffet for lunch (kids were hungry), then we went to the open house at the kids' club for them to check it out. After that, we went to the pool. By the time we were done there, our rooms were ready.

Recent alaska cruisers-anyone have trouble making a 12 noon flight out of vancouver?

We had a later flight so we just did regular disembarkation. However, the line at Air Canada was ridiculously long - I think the computer kiosks weren't working. We waited over an hour in line and couldn't do curbside check-in because we were flying to the US. Then, we got called for...

    First time cruiser... Alaska

Interesting - we just sailed Alaska and had an outside stateroom and loved it! Our friends we were traveling with had a verandah and enjoyed it. I don't know that it's necessary, but it can be convenient especially on Tracy Arm day. I wouldn't say don't get an outside stateroom because of...

    Ketchikan Shipping

We also had success in asking shops to ship for us. We bought an original painting in Ketchikan (at a little gallery on Creek Street) happily shipped it to us for very little cost.

    Alaska - which side?

I would say no. Most of the channels you go through will show fjords - so they will look similar on both sides. You may see more wide ocean on the port side, but then on the way home you'll be turned around. Ditto Tracy Arm - one side will be closest to the glacier, but then the captain...
