If you are going to pay the DCL price for Alaska anyway I would really recommend spending the little (relatively) bit extra to get a balcony. The balcony doors are very heavy and can be hard for an adult to open, plus on DCL they have an extra (out of reach) child lock that you can use for peace...

Ditto what others have said about dropping family at the port morning of and then returning the rental car. In our experience, rental car shuttle lines, counter lines, etc. can be really slow going and it can be much quicker for a single adult with no bags to get back to the ship.
