I used to do this all the time when I was on my college programs. It was actually quite peaceful to grab something to eat and then just people watch and roam around the parks. I wouldn't do it again unless I had an AP though, just too much for a ticket to NOT go onto any of the attractions.

YES! I'm originally right outside Detroit and I always sighed and rolled my eyes when someone out of state would gawk in alarm that I used to live there. C'mon people, any large city has its problem areas, but we are proud of the city and it's revitalization is amazing!

If you can manage to carry a small umbrella I would go that route. Just watch out for others around you as I've been poked a few times by people not paying enough attention while walking through the parks :)

I personally have never worn lipstick into the parks, but I'm a lip balm kinda girl. If you are afraid of it ruining your bag, I would just place it into a ziplock bag to protect it. :)

This is one of my main concerns about visiting DLR for the first time. I would love to see HM and keeping my fingers crossed it'll be open after Labor Day WE depending on when the parties are!
