Duh, the characters are based on FAMOUS TOYS to make it appealing and interesting, not to sell the characters. Duffy is just a merchandising thing, created by the sole purpose of selling and not for entertaining.

I didn't know of its existence until I saw its shop at Epcot and thought it was pure merchandising. It came out of nowhere, big mistake by Disney IMO. Could have been better if it had appeared on a TV movie or something with Mickey, not just a storybook nobody ever saw or knew about.
