Article: "Disney Fan Culture as Academic Study" featuring David Zanolla

I presented my Disney fan studies research earlier this month at a national academic conference, and DISBoards.com was a prominent part of the talk. I discussed fan archetypes, including Disney fans, fanatics, and consumers, and the ways in which disney fans create community on the Web...

    Disney Marketing Geniuses and Tangled

Yes, one of my students analyzed the marketing strategy used in the Tangled campaign. She pointed out that although they tried direct TV ads to boys, the merchandise was almost exclusively for girls. So boys buy tickets but girls are still the queens (princesses, more aptly) of merch.

If there was a Club 33 at WDW...

...Would you join? Since many folks are closer to WDW, would you join Club 33 if it was at the Magic Kingdom? Expensive, sure, but I chatted with a couple who said if they had to choose between Club 33 and DVC, they'd go for Club 33 if it was at WDW (closer to where they live). :)

    Club 33

Had a fantastic evening there a few years ago. Really good apple martinis. :thumbsup2 We watched Fantasmic from the balcony.

So my professor started attacking Disney...

Alice was just a girl, no tiara. And when things got ridiculous, she woke herself up and stopped all the nonsense.

So my professor started attacking Disney...

There's a lot of resistance to thinking critically and analyzing the media we consume. We are afraid that it will lessen our enjoyment, ruin happy childhood memories, and undermine our beliefs and values. But as a prof who is a Disney fan and is also preparing to teach a class in Critical...

World of Disney NYC - now we have a closing date

The plans for the new stores sounds amazing. http://www.nytimes.com/2009/10/13/business/media/13disney.html I think I heard recently that they could be moving the NYC one back to Times Square. Seems like that rumor comes and goes...

Why can't they sell stuff like they do at Tren-D online on disneyshopping?

I understand the logistics, but it would still be nice to have some cooler stuff available online.

    Disney Tattoo

For years I've considered an Alice in Wonderland tattoo, probably a Cheshire Cat, but maybe Alice and the Caterpillar on the mushroom. See-- this is my problem. Can't decide which tattoo, where to put it, etc. Fail.

New DIS Board policy in effect

Thanks for the update. I always thought it was interesting that people would want to use a Disney forum/community as a place to talk about so many different topics. Ostensibly, we all meet here to talk about Disney and exchange travel tips, but it has become so much more. It really is...

    Club 33?

I went once and it was amazing. The staff is so friendly and the food is great. We sat on the balcony and watched Fantasmic. Definitely something I would splurge on if I won the lottery and lived close enough to enjoy it often. The members who invited us said that 33 has special events...

    Tren-D comes to Downtown Disney

Sounds like they've tried to model it after Vault 28 at Disneyland. http://disney.go.com/eventservices/disneyvault28/ The stuff is pricey at the Vault, but really cool. It's hip stuff but it's still Disney :)

My take on the whole "D23" program

Well said, Pete (as usual). I was thinking about the Castaway Club for returning DCL cruisers. I have a membership card and always receive a nice stateroom gift, and a small reception onboard. It's not a huge deal, but it really does make me feel appreciated and part of a community...

Reactions to Are you 23? Announcement

I posted this thought in another thread, but basically, the DIS is a fan community, D23 is a merchandise club. This is a dated idea. They need to innovate. Did they really think this would "wow" the fans? Sorta reminds of DCA..."You're doing what??" and now they are spending millions...

    D23 Conference Call Today

Annette, you put it best: this could have been so cool. So much opportunity lost. Saddest thing to me is point from the conference call about fan involvement. You can't create a fan community without the fans. The DIS is a fan community-- D23 is a merchandise club. There are so many...

Reactions to Are you 23? Announcement

If it was required to be a member to attend the expo, I'd probably sign up. I'm really curious about the event. Otherwise, the merchandise didn't really do much for me. It's nice, but as I said before, meh. The magazine seems like it would make a nice collectors item, but I really miss...

    Dumped at 35

Stacy, The fact that you used a Royal Tennenbaums quote proves to me that you are a cool gal and in need of someone with a quick wit and a great sense of humor. Hang in there-- this can be a great opportunity to get to know yourself and find out what YOU want in a relationship. :goodvibes

    Facebook (check, ) Twitter ????

There are great little widgets that you can add to your homepage that displays the latest tweet. Best way to get to know twitter is to sign up and give it a try. Follow some folks and engage in some two-way communication-- that's the best part! Twitter etiquette suggests that you tweet a...
