The 2011 Alaskan Thread--Cruise Tips and Planning

That's kind of the rub - the most economical are typically the ones with the lowest possibility for good opportunities. And especially for whales from what we were told on our excursion, later in the season is when chances to see typically go downhill quickly as they migrate to the south pacific...

Would You Cruise On A Titanic Replica?

Don't think I could do it either.. The only thing that came to mind is where are they going to find a big enough sticker to put on the bottom.. ;)

How many guys do wear jeans on casual nights?

I agree it's go with what you're comfortable with. That said, it is the Caribbean, which is a lot like summer up in MN, and it stays pretty much that way year around down there. My pants of choice, including eating out at most average places around Chicago is jeans, but they're personally my...

March 22, 2012 Dream SSMC Reunion AKA "It's all Gary's Fault" Cruise

Ditto, was very undewhelmed by the TT, love the Macadamia pancakes, it includes a matching nut butter. And we've been going to Portobello for good Italian since it originally opened way back with a different name. I'd go there way over and above Moma Melrose. Am curious to hear about...

March 22, 2012 Dream SSMC Reunion AKA "It's all Gary's Fault" Cruise

:rotfl: Tom Skilling the big muckity muck in Chicago weather circles, in his usual long-winded manner, just tossed out there that all the doomsaying the weather forecasters have been putting out there with the long cold spells and high snowfalls the upper midwest was supposed to have is now...

March 22, 2012 Dream SSMC Reunion AKA "It's all Gary's Fault" Cruise

Fyi, I don't think you can. Unless they've changed it again, they allow nobody in, no dropoffs before 11am now, that's why Monika mentioned it.

    Jumbo Screen Televisions

Waaay back before the first screen was installed and it was just rumour, we had a runaround naming game here, and it kind of settled on Dumbotron. :upsidedow Ariel View and this new name, Funnel Vision, are definitely DCL's offical names for it. :)

    Freedom of the Seas damage

I was watching the NOAA buoys last night along with the webcams of the port and when Freedom sailed they were already reporting big waves. Here's a map, look along the Fla coast for the yellow spot which was the 9m(29.5 ft)!! readings: I love this part from the thread over there...

    Dream Still in Port

Ah, they've swapped ships again, thanks. :) And it does look like the worst of the front *may* have finally passed them.

    Dream Still in Port

That would have been RCCL's Freedom of the Seas, and yeah, they must have had a very rough ride out past this thing. Local surf reports are 8+ foot waves, which for that beach are HUGE.

    Dream Still in Port

Carnival Sensation. They're going to be sitting tight for a while longer, the weather front's taking its sweet time moving through.

    Just watched the webcam

Check out the oceanfront, it's hard to see, but this is Cocoa Beach just south of the port and it almost never sees this kind of wave action. http://www.twopalms.com/

Yep, these kinds of winds can easily overpower the thrusters. Anyone that left early was probably trying to get ahead of it, if they left early enough they might have gotten out into open water, but I'd not like that ride. Check out this radar, you'll need to mouse scroll out, move it to fla...

    Just watched the webcam

That was exactly my thinking as well, they usually coast along to Nassau, so they can easily make up any delay overnight. It does look like the low that's been dragging all this mess across the Bahamas and Florida is beginning to move off, so with some luck upcoming cruises/vacationers won't...

    Just watched the webcam

They're waiting out the weather. There's one last severe front pushing through and should be past in the next half hour, then they'll probably set sail. Check out those palm trees up next to the white building, it's a smart thing to not try traversing the inlet right now.

    Boarding today. Icky weather.

Looking at a radar right now, there's a big focused severe front that's going to push thru in the next half hour, and it'll be clear behind it. Looks like both captains are taking the safe bet and are going to ride it out in dock.

    Alaska July 2012

DCL has recently updated them, they're now more inline with what was presented this year, although they're still a little shorter, something that especially in Ketchikan we were rushing to get aboard after an excursion as it was. For me the rough first and last day sailing in the north...

    Automatic upgrade by DCL

People have been upgraded from even higher than the cat 11's. However, there is no predictable pattern to how or when. It's not something you can count on happening, more a pleasant surprise if it does.
