For some reason I am thinking there is a better chance of upgrade by checking-in in-person and not online. When I check-in they seem to do a good job finding good rooms. I think of online check-in as completely arbitrary and they just take any room. Thoughts?

It's better to buy a pre-paid wireless (cell type--Verizon, AT&T). I purchased one from CVS for $50.00 and added $25.00 of "time" and had wireless access (no cords) everywhere I went. Overall not a lot cheaper but a lot easier to use and you can take it anywhere.

I have noticed times when few rooms are avaialble when free dining is selected. When free dining is not selected (regular rate, regular price) far more rooms are available. They must limit the number of rooms for free dining.
