They deliberately formed a human chain for the purpose of blocking traffic, and then refused all requests to move to the side. That's different than just sitting on a sidewalk. The protesters were very clear that they had no intention of moving to allow those other tuition-payers the freedom...

And since it is a public sidewalk, they did not have the right to obstruct it.

Great, unless you happen to be in a wheelchair, or visually impaired, or elderly. Everyone at that university has rights, not just the protesters.
