    A Christmas Town

Duh. I'm just noticing your user name. Williamsburg is probably too far away, but you did say anywhere was fine. https://www.visitwilliamsburg.com/seasons/christmas-williamsburg There's always DW at Christmas. Just sayin' Have you considered Nashville? The Gaylord Opryland Hotel goes all out...

    A Christmas Town

I'll second Colonial Williamsburg, but recommend you stay on-site, in one of the colonial houses, if possible (it's pretty expensive). It's far too hot in that part of Virginia to have snow in December, but the decorations are lovely. At night, you could go to Busch Gardens Williamsburg to see...

flatware and dishes, buy another set now or wait until i need it?

It's totally up to you, but since you asked...I don't see the point in buying something you don't need just because you might need it a theoretical "some day." But I don't see the point in having everything match, either.

So what's on the menu for Thanksgiving? Looking for something new or different to add to the menu.

It's basically this one: http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/member/views/black-sticky-gingerbread-recipe-50162196, based on what ingredients I have (I don't bother with some of the ingredients), but I don't use that much sugar and I use more ginger. I also add at least a half-teaspoon of black...

    Travel budget %

I don't budget, but it works out to about 6% of my take home pay, after all necessities are paid (healthcare, retirement, regular savings, mortgage, bills, etc). Works for me, mostly because it's just me.

Washington D.C. with teenagers... and tight budget.

The National Cathedral and the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception are well worth a visit if you or the kids are at all into architecture. The Library of Congress and the National Archives are also wonderful places.

    Tips on becoming a saver?

No lectures or judgements from me. And I have the unpopular opinion that budgets aren't always necessary for everybody in every situation. I don't have one. If you're serious about saving, then you just need to stop spending money and start saving it. Throw as much as possible into savings at...

    The Stay-cation...

The important thing is that you don't work. You don't HAVE to do stuff, unless not working isn't enough. If you want to do stuff, then I don't think you're trying hard enough unless you live someplace like Gatlinburg or Dollywood. In which case you have my deepest sympathies, because that truly...

    Vegas on the cheap!!

I wouldn't miss the Mob Museum, especially since you're going to be downtown on Fremont St. anyway. Since you have a quick trip, I'd skip the Strip and stay in one of the downtown hotels. The Golden Nugget seems to offer a lot of bang for the buck.

    Preventing kids from charging

That's the sort of answer I was hoping to hear. Good on you for communicating your expectations, and letting your children think for themselves.:thumbsup2

    Preventing kids from charging

I'm guessing all this extraneous stuff is in addition to saying, "kids, don't charge anything"? Being told NO pretty much worked when I was a kid.

Got rid of cable, it's almost been a year!

I got rid of cable television service after my 20-some year-old tv finally died a few years ago. I never got around to buying another tv. I can stream most anything I want to watch onto the laptop from the free version of hulu, pbs, or the major networks, and can go to a bar for the rare...

Best Value or Downtown Disney Hotel for Adults

I'd do the AllStars, and ASM in particular, before I'd do POP, but that's just a personal preference because I like the layout better. No experience with the DTD commercial hotels.

    52-Week Savings Challenge

I did this last year, and will do it this year. It works best if I do it in reverse, and make a monthly deposit into my "fun money" bank account around the first of the month (that $250 first payment isn't easy, but a great way to start). I usually stop when the week for $35 rolls around, and...

    Make Up for Teeen Daughter

Old Bat wisdom ahead: You (generic you) should keep in mind the OP's daughter is at an age where her skin will change on a daily basis, and she's probably going to have some level of breakout no matter what she wears, or if she wears nothing at all. What won't break out her skin today, might do...

    Mall of America

Why would anybody want to jump out of bed to go shopping at 10 in the morning? I'd much rather spend that time sleeping.

    Thanksgiving plans??

If it were up to me, I'd keep it very simple. Unless I were going out, I'd try to recreate my favorite cruise ship meal: Pumpkin Soup, Turkey Tenderloins and Baby Peas with Farfalle in Cream sauce, and Bitter and Blanc (dark and white chocolate) Bread Pudding. Or I'd play with an Italian theme...

Advice Requested: Condo vs Single Family Home- Single Mom

I was in the OP's situation about 25 years ago (less the children part). Knowing this would be the only home I would ever buy, I opted for a handicapped-accessible ground floor 1-bedroom condo on a bus line. I've had similar ups and downs as has any homeowner, but I definitely got more bang for...

Theoretical question: Do we judge people who we think spend a lot....

Unconsciously, yes. I hope my saving grace is that I realize it, and back off when it's brought to my attention.
