We have been to the World in May as well, usually first week. Hot but low/moderate crowds, but also no super extended hours. We are going May 13th and 14th and so the added shows and late hours and I am definitely wondering why.

I am not sure how to time the boarding thing. On some of the trip report posts they are saying the terminal is getting really congested as more and more people come, but they haven't started boarding. Then some folks who are arriving later are walking right through all the steps and onto the ship.
