Beach near the port at St. Maarten

The beach near the Cruise Facility, with Water Taxi service, is Great Bay Beach. It's a fine beach with many options for food and drink, but I wouldn't go into the water there because of water pollution concerns. Little Bay Beach (mentioned above) is a short distance away, and has no such...

Excursions for handicapped child in St. Thomas, Castaway Cay and St. Maarten

For St. Maarten, I would note that Joyce Prince, who does tours there, has this statement on her website: We give only custom, personalized tours. Anything that you would like to see. And please note that we are wheelchair, walker and baby stroller friendly! A suggestion if you are...

    Calling home from St. Maarten

I would note that Joyce Prince offers island tours, and one of the benefits available is a free call home when she picks you up. I am very happy to make a new personal service available. When we meet for your tour, you can make a free call back home at no additional charge. Also, please...

Getting to Marigot from the Cruise Terminal in St. Maarten

Taxi from the Cruise Facility to Marigot is at a set rate, and is posted. I have a copy of it here. (click) I would allow 45 minutes and hope for a little quicker, each way. gary

Havensight is St. Thomas. In St. Maarten they dock at the Cruise Facility in Philipsburg. gary

WiFi Hotspot in St. Martin and St. Thomas

The downtown McDonalds (there's another over in Simpson Bay on the way to the airport) is located directly on Frontstreet, the main shopping street. It's to the left, facing the Courthouse, less than five minutes slow walk. I wouldn't call it tiny. It probably seats 100 with the upstairs...

St. Maarten or St Thomas - stay around the port?

The Cruise Facility in St. Maarten can easily handle two mega-liners and at least four other ships at their piers. You can check the ships scheduled at their official website. gary

    Calling home from St. Maarten

Here's a photo of CyberLink. (click) It's next door to Juggie's, which has lots of signage, so you should be able to find the place fairly easily. gary

    Calling home from St. Maarten

CyberLink in Philipsburg offered internet phone calls the last time I checked. It's on Nisbeth Steeg (alley) off of Frontstreet, probably a 20 minute walk from the Cruise Facility. If you're taking a laptop there are a number of free WiFi hotspots around the island, including several on...

    Has anyone ever stayed here?

Is this the property on Hotel Circle? We stayed there several years ago for a convention center function and thought that it was fine -- tower room. Where did you see the bad reviews? gary

    Excursion recommendations

With your kids, for St. Maarten, consider a visit to the St. Maarten Park (the zoo) and/or The Butterfly Farm. If you want a kid-friendly beach, check out le Galion. gary

    Tortola Callwood Distillery

It's been years since we visited (pre-digital camera, even) and we didn't take a taxi, so no idea of the cost, but I'd say go for it. We were sailing the British Virgins for a week and found Callwood when we were anchored in Cane Garden Bay. The rum was VERY good, and we ended up buying...

    St Maarten Airport Beach

You are most certainly thinking of the SunSet Beach Bar, as posted above. We vacation on St. Maarten regularly, and have given up on the SSBB because of their high prices and a general 'attitude' problem. A couple of hundred yards away, on the same beach, just the opposite side of the...

Eastern ports - Cash and credit cards ok? Travelers checks?

I agree with the above comments about AmEx. We have visited many shops, not just in St. Maarten, that either flatly refuse our AmEx card or add on a fee (or cancel an offered discount) because of the fees that American Express charges the vendors. gary

Eastern ports - Cash and credit cards ok? Travelers checks?

On the Dutch side, St. Maarten, the de facto currency is the US Dollar, and is fixed against the official currency, the Guilder, or Netherlands Antilles Florin. On the Dutch side, dollars are readily accepted everywhere and you will most likely receive your change in US currency...
