    Tax return question: education/tuition question

You should have received an official tax document from the school for the year 2010. That's odd the way they posted it in January. My daughter's tax document listed it all in 2010. I would definitely talk to a tax preparer but it sounds like what is listed in 2010 on the document is for that...

    The Amazing Over-priced String Thing

My daughter just had to have it too when we were there May 2009. I believe it was $15. It since has broken of course. It's not the sturdiest toy around and the batteries seem to lose their charge fast and even after she would recharge them, it didn't seem like it was a strong enough charge to...

Any deals on Loving Family dollhouse?

If you have an Ollie's nearby, sometimes they carry the sets for next to nothing. My DMIL bought the house one Christmas and then found all the sets a girl could ever need at Ollie's for very cheap.

    Income/spending/quality of life

I do think balance is the right word when it comes to saving enough to help with possible future expenses, etc. and enjoying life to its fullest. My parents lived life pretty much the same way you do. That being said, my mother passed away, my father is in the nursing home and all of their...

We're going this weekend and have been several times. We go on the weekend because metro is half price and parking at metro stations is free. We catch the Metro at Shady Grove and get off at MetroCenter and then catch the metro to Smithsonian (you have to switch from red line to blue line)...

Book suggestion for rising 3rd grader that reads higher?

If she likes ghost stories, my advanced 10 year old reader loves the "Scary Stories" series. You may want to look over them to see if they are too graphic. My DD has grown up with 3 much older sisters that nothing seems to bother her and she's read them all. I bought them on sale on Amazon...

Best Private Lender for Student Loans?

Have you checked to see if your state has a nurse shortage? MD is a nursing shortage so if you sign an agreement to work in any public health capacity in the state which is basically any hospital, etc., they will pay for all your college expenses including a living stipend. If for some reason...

How Long Is Too Long to Wait For Furniture

We just went through the same scenario and cancelled the order. We got our living room furniture in about 2 months but our headboard for our bed was ordered through our local furniture store and wherever it is coming from, they will only ship it on their truck when the furniture store orders...

More questions for those that drive FROM MD to Disney??

We drive it straight through but we leave the evening before when DH gets home from work around 6:00pm. It takes about 16 hours and the kids sleep most of the way. We take a potty break around 8:00 or so in the evening and then drive it straight until we hit the border of FL. Then we use the...

Help in the NY, NJ, PA, MD area

I second the inner harbor in Baltimore. Whatever you do, don't miss the Fudgery... yummm!! If you've never been to The Fudgery, they have their cooks making the fudge with an audience standing there watching and they perform a really cute barbershop type singing experience. They give everyone...

    Disputing a tax assessment?

I'm in the process of appealing mine now. Since we refinanced last year, they are accepting the appraisal we had done as proof of the value of the home. Where I live, our house is only assessed once every three years by the state taxation department and we're basically stuck with it for 3...

    Using Synthetic Motor Oil

Bought a new Nissan a year ago and Nissan garage does all the oil changes. The very first oil change, they recommended regular oil and then after that, they recommended synthetic for the life of the car. The nice thing is we only have to get it changed every 6,000 miles instead of 3,000 miles...

So I had too much withheld and I have to pay tax on that?

You'll have to amend your return IF you itemized on your 2008 return and took the state tax deduction on schedule A. You should be able to look at 2008 federal return on that schedule and see if you included it as a deduction. It sounds like you got a 1099 from the state which tells me that...
