Character Meet & Greets

I've been to WDW multiple times but never taken a Disney cruise. We are expecting our second grandchild this year. We really want to take them both to WDW next year but are thinking maybe a cruise would be just as fun and alot easier with a one year old? Our dgd has gone to WDW with us 4 times. She loves the characters. Are there alot onboard with several opportunities to meet them? Do you think our 4 year old will be as happy with the cruise as a trip to WDW? We would not be comfortable leaving her at the nursery/clubs so not sure if it'd be a good idea to cruise or not. Thoughts?

We did our first DCL cruise when the kids were 3 & 5. It was a 7-night and perfect for M&Gs. The kids saw tons of characters. Show up 5-10 minutes before the time and you won't be waiting in line, other than the princess event but then one of you show up and get in line 40 minutes or so before and have the other bring your GDs about 10 minutes before it starts. Call the PALS line every night to get the minute by minute schedule. Get to know who the CMs are who accompany the characters & ask to confirm the next character. We usually start the next line, letting anyone who gets in line after us know to get in front of us to see the current character, unless the CM has cut off the line. It's better than the parks IMO because most of them are inside in the A/C so the characters can stay out a little longer.

Thanks for the information! I think we are going to give it a try December 2015!

The princess gathering is magical. My four year old girls squealed in delight! I will never forget their faces when all of the princesses came down that staircase and did their little twirl. Another thing we liked was that you could randomly bump into characters on the ship. We bumped into Chip and Dale in and they made such a big deal about them being twins and my girls being twins. It wasn't like they brushed us off because they weren't 'on duty'. Finally, it's awesome to have characters at Castaway too. Overall such a fun experience! You won't regret it!

There will be many opportunities to meet Characters. As an indication check the Personal Navigators on: http://disneycruiselineblog.com/personal-navigators/
Select a cruise that is close to your own and check out the daily schedules. You will notice lots of advertised M&G and there will be characters "off the menu" too, so always bring your camera everywhere.
Enjoy your cruise.

IMO for children who love characters, a Disney cruise is truly magical. Many, many M&G throughout. Even on 5 night they had 2 princess gatherings. Stumbling upon a princess, Minnie or Mickey walking around - reminds me of long ago at WDW when the characters walked around the parks. The characters also visit the nursery and kids clubs.

We r doing both cruise & WDW with DD for the first time. She will be 4 1/2, and tall enough to ride most rides. She is still a character girl and I want to enjoy that for as long as it lasts.

There are character M&Gs pretty consistently throughout the day. Many of the characters appear in different outfits at different times through the cruise as well (formal night, pirate night, at Castaway Cay).

A cruise really is an awesome vacation when it comes to younger toddlers. We took DS at 2 and 2.5. He never spent time in the nursery or Club, except when the Club had open house hours and we could go with him. We still had a great time. DH & I did a bit of alternating so that we could do a few adult events, but we spent the vast majority of the cruise enjoying activities as a family.

Thanks everyone for your responses. You guys rock! I'm really excited about cruising now that I know dgd should have a great time!
