Banking/borrowing

Dumb question: once you bank/borrow, can you 'undo' it before the points are used? What are the rules or timeframes governing these? And what is the 'transaction limit'?

We are thinking of splitting our purchase to allow us to have several home resorts, and to do so we would be in part relying on banking or borrowing to meet desired rooms every 2nd/3rd year at the 11 mo windows so I'd really like to know what limitations and what procedures I'd be dealing with!

Banking and borrowing are permanent irreversible transactions-- even if you cancel the reservation that you banked or borrowed points for. If you do cancel the reservation & are left with banked or borrowed points, they will expire at the end of their "new" use year.

You couldn't then borrow them back?

Follow up question--can you borrow 2 years in a row?

No, you can't borrow them back. Nor can you bank the same points twice.

Points may be moved exactly once, that's it. If moved, once, they will expire at the end of their new use year, if unused.

Not to steal the OP thread, but do I understand correctly that if you bank say 2013 points to 2014 you can bank your original 2014 points to 2015 and just use what was originally 2013 points for 2014?i if that makes any sense at all lol

Also, can you pull from the next year like borrow from 2014 for 2013?

twinsouvenirs 06-22-2013 09:06 PM

that is also kind of my question--say I banked 13, used 14 an borrowed 15 but wanted to go on vacation in 15, could i borrow from 16 to vacation in 16?

Yes, once you banked your 2013 points they are in essence 2014 points to be used during your 2014 use year. Then you can bank 2014 to 2015. And yes, you can borrow 2014 points and they in essence would become 2013 points to be used in your 2013 year.

You wouldn't borrow from 2016 to use in 2016. There would be no need to do that. You may be confusing when you reserve with when you travel. Points only need to be available for your trip dates, not when you call to book.

Think of banking and borrowing as morphing the points into a adjoining UY. Once morphed, they can't be morphed again.

Banking moves forward and borrowing moves backward.

You can't borrow points in advance. You can only borrow when you are making a reservation that needs them.

If you cancel a reservation that used borrowed points, the borrowed points are returned to your account, but they will expire at the end of the use year into which they were borrowed.

Booking, banking & borrowing are all dependent on the use year of your vacation.

You may bank points one year into the future. You may borrow points from one year in the future. So at any given time, you may have up to 3 years worth of points available for a vacation.

Banking & borrowing are final, irreversible transactions.

Take a few minutes to read the following thread on Use Year - it will help you understand the concepts and to choose the use year(s) that will work best for your situation.

Understanding Use Year

I will definitely read that, thank you. I just realized i made a mistake in my example...

I meant that after you borrowed 2015 to use in 2014, could you borrow 2016 to use in 2015. basically, can you always or at least repeatedly borrow from the next year?

The year isn't the only issue with UY. You also have to consider the month. So if you are planning a vacation in June 2014 and you have a Dec contract, you could not borrow Dec 2015 points because a June 2014 vacation would be in your Dec 2013 UY.

With figuring out the UY, forget about calendar year. You have to create a new yearly calendar based on your UY. So if you have a Dec UY, Happy New Year is Dec 1, not Jan 1.

Yes. You can borrow one use year ahead.

Let's say you have a June use year. You take a July 2013 vacation that uses all of the points from your June 2013 use year (6/1/2013 - 5/31/2014) and also uses all of the points from your 2014 use year (6/1/2014 - 5/31/2015) which you borrowed into your 2013 use year.

Then let's say you want to take a vacation in September of 2014 - that falls within your 2014 use year, but you used up all you 2014 points. You can borrow 2015 points to do so (assuming you have enough points in 2015 to cover it).

You can always borrow one use year ahead and you can do that every use year if you so choose.

ok, so you could run a chronic 1 yr deficit if you wanted to.

Thank you guys :)

I only ask because we are considering buying enough points to get a prime week either every other year or every third year, so if our schedules meant that we could take a blowout one using bank borrow but then wanted to use some of the points for another vacation the next year, it would be doable by borrowing from the following year. Obviously that is not ideal but it could be done.
