Upgrade Question

Ok we arrive in three days and I looked on line and it appears that POR is just about full. The room type we booked is sold out. Does anyone know what the odds are about getting upgraded and moved to another resort? Should we offer when we check in? Should I ask when we check in if they need volunteers to switch? Any advice would be great. Hoping for a little magical pixie dust!!:wizard:

It's not likely that you'll be upgraded, but you can always hope. You might ask how much it would cost to upgrade and see if they offer it to you.

If there is availability at another resort, you can upgrade - but it will more than likely be at rack rate. If there was any reason that they needed to move guests to another resort, you would have been contacted already.

The type upgrade you're talking about isn't all that common. We saw it at Pop when they offered a really good discount. Disney way oversold the rooms and then had to move people to DVC resorts. In all reality there really isn't a good way to tell if a resort is going to be full when you are there. There are only so many rooms available for each room type. When they're gone, they're gone. You, supposedly have one. You booked it, you will most likely be put in one.
I can't even imagine 'offering' to move to another resort. You can try but I doubt there will be a need.

:confused3

Honestly not trying to sound snarky, but why not just book a room that you are actually happy with?

If your room category (or resort) is sold out, it does not mean that the rooms are over sold. Usually if a resort has a capacity issue they will tell you and make accomodations. They know what is going on. Personally, I would look forward to my trip and not say anything unless I was approached.:thumbsup2:goodvibes

In overselling situations, they usually try to move guests out well in advance of the trip. In the Pop situation, they moved some guests a few months ahead of time so they could sell more free dining packages at the values.

The situation you're describing, guests being 'walked' at check-in, is not at all common, and the fact that you're not seeing rooms on the Disney site doesn't even mean they're fully booked. Disney sells inventory to third party travel booking sites like Travelocity and Expedia; so what you see on their site doesn't represent the complete inventory of rooms at POR.

So, to answer your question, no, I wouldn't offer to be relocated to another resort, because in all likelihood they won't be moving anyone, and all you'll get is a confused look from the front desk CM. :)

Oh no I wouldn't offer to move you will definitely get that blank stare! Honestly it's like asking for a free upgrade & most CMs don't take kindly to that. There are millions of ppl who go to WDW at the same time can you imagine how many times ppl as to be upgraded? I've spoken to more then 1 resort CM who says the asking for free upgrades is their greatest pet peeve!

In over 20 trips to WDW I have only been upgraded once & that was not at check in it was after we finally got our room number hours later than it should have been & the door wouldn't even close all the way! Their were other check in issues as well that shouldn't have happened.

We paid for GV CL Poly manger gave us TPV CL

Even on our honeymoon we received no upgrades.

Now you can always call & ASK for a specific building or area or let's say you want ground floor or a corner room for double windows. It's not guaranteed you'll get it but in my experience they will try to grant your requests..

I would definitely book the resort or view you want you can never count on an upgrade..

I've seen videos of ppl being upgraded to suites and all but they just got rarely lucky... Sigh wish it could be us sometimes.. Lol

I would just check in and see what happens.

As others have indicated, most of the time when Disney overbooks, they contact people by email well in advance of their trip and offer them the upgrade.
I've also seen anecdotes of people who have booked a particular room category, had it not available at check-in and not being offered an "upgrade" at all.
Anything can happen.

Now depending on your category, you could try playing dumb and requesting a particular building at check-in, even though you know there aren't any rooms in your category.
ie. I'm booked standard view at POFQ and I could request Bldg 5 or 6, even though I know that all the rooms in those buildings are water or garden view.
Granted, I specifically booked standard, because I DON'T want to be in either one of those buildings. I'm actually a little worried that I'm going to get the single standard view room in building 2.
Anyways...in your case, you could request Oak Manor, even though all those rooms are Royal Rooms etc.

Being upgraded to a different resort is very rare, and I doubt they would be looking for people at check-in.

My niece works at POR. While they have been booked to almost capacity (remember rooms are left open in case of mechanical problems etc) there has been no upgrades to other resorts. Now magical inhouse upgrades happen but those are not usually for people who ask for them.

TDC Nala 04-10-2013 05:07 PM

I don't think there is a really good way to ask to be upgraded for free to another resort (apparently the OP is hoping for a deluxe resort because I'm guessing they would have just booked the moderate they wanted). Disney will do this if they have a need to; in overselling situations they make that offer generally before arrival - and if you're being walked on arrival it's for something unexpected, like maintenance issues taking rooms out of inventory or the arrival or overstaying of a large group.

Honestly, I think you saying any of that is going to lessen the chance that it would. I've heard of people while their checking in ask how much it would be to upgrade(room type, not different resort).
We went to Disney in march. We booked All star sports. We did online check-in 10 days prior. We should up to hotel around 9 am. There was 7 of us and between all of us, 2 rooms. We were definitely ridiculously excited (my BIL first time in Disney) and all had on Mickey shirts. While the CM was taking care of us, there was another Cm kind of looking over his shoulder. Our room was ready but not my MIL. The CM wa about to write down our room # in packet when the other CM stepped forward and said "Do you wanna stay somewhere else". If course I knew what that meant and what a RARE thing it is! Of course I said yes but then asked what about my MIL(since we wanted to be together). He said they would go too! I asked where he was sending us, and it was a suprise. He took a map with and circled our new resort and ten folded it back up and handed it to me. AKL!!!!! I really have no clue why he picked us. First I thought they over booked, but they were ready to go as far as tell us our room #! The CM said sometimes he can just randomly select people( I still have no clue!)
Of course we loved it and it was absolutely amazing. I have only ever stayed in the values and this was a whole other experience. I know this is like winning the lottery.
If I were you, I wouldn't come out and ask. I would think they probably get it alot and don't like it. Just be happy your in Disney and you never know when there is extra pixie dust lying around!!!!

Thanks everyone. I am packing for our trip tomorrow. I was just curious and to those who thought I was being rude I was just asking. I book POR cause that is what I can afford. Sometimes it is nice to wish. MAGIC DANCE TONIGHT!!

bluejasmine 04-10-2013 09:11 PM

Nothing wrong in asking questions here, thats what these boards are for!
I've always wished myself to get some type of upgrade.. Wish DISNEY had a rewards program! Lol
