Cash needed for excursions?

Sailing on the Fantasy to the western Caribbean. Thinking about doing our own excursions. Should we expect to pay cash for everything? Does anybody take credit cards? That will be a lot of cash to have to take, since excursions can be pricey! Would love feedback. Thanks!

Wondering this also

What does everybody do? Also what do you do with the cash during activities? we are going snorkling and doing a dolphin swim. I hate to leave it laying somewhere to get lost, but also do not want to lose it in the water.

I would recommend using credit cards, unless they only take cash. We have only taken Disney excursions, but we have still used a credit card to pay for lunch and if we bought anything while there. I would not want to carry cash, it would be too likely to disappear. You could keep a credit card on you no matter what you do, because water won't hurt it.

Sorry, did forget to mention tips. If you expect to need to tip anyone, bus driver, etc. then you might need a small amount of cash.

Cash can get wet, too. It's a bit icky, but it still spends.

I'll respond

:)First, there are water proof "wallets" for sale online and in diving/sporting goods stores. They are also known as "safes" and many are small enough to be worn on wrist or around neck when in the water or on excursions.

However, most ports (we're familiar with W. Carib. and will be on the Fantasy soon) you'll go to have many outfitters offering much the same thing, just find a reputable one that will take a credit card.

There are many tour providers who have been written about here on the DIS with information on payments and another site for those "who could be critics or reviewers of cruises" (hope it's ok to post that!) that have extensive port/excursion reviews including payment information.

Just be careful about booking over the internet in advance for an excursion with a credit card, know what the cancellation policy is and caveat emptor with your cc information.

Have a great cruise!!!:wave2:

Taking a half day Disney excursion in st Thomas (castaway sail and snorkel or something) and it is a half day. Should I be concerned about bringing a backpack and camera and leaving it on the boat with a little cash and credit card while we are in the water?

I have one of these-you can carry your kttw card, id, credit card and cash in it. http://www.mouseshoppe.com/Merchant5...Category_Code=

Do you need to take your passport every time you disembark?

JnDRader 03-14-2013 05:30 AM

Check to make sure your CC doesn't charge an obscene fee for out of country use. Oh, and you might want to call the CC ahead of time and let them know where you will be going. Charges in GC one day on Cozumel the next, for example, may put your card on lockdown. The fee's are important though. Some charge nothing while others can charge several percent, maybe more :confused3.

if you are planning to buy pictures on your excursion most places take only cash for it. Our table mates went on stingray excursion in Grand Cayman and had no money for pictures and they didn't give them time to run to ATM, they were very upset for the rest of the cruise. Furry Catamaran at Cozumel takes only cash for pictures as well.

Only if the country states that you must have it with you. I remember being required to take it in Russia, Germany and Sweden but don't recall any other cruise ports where they said you HAD to bring it.

In most of the places DCL goes, you can go ashore with your drivers license and a copy of your passport just in case.

I would always take a bit of cash. Always.

Definitely would take cash. I usually don't carry any but my husband does and for some reason I did not think any thing would be different on vacation from our usual M. O. So I was in for a shock when we went on our first port excursion, had a fantastic time but could not tip because we were cash-less. We felt VERY terrible. Lessoned learned: Bring cash!

The next day we went on our own adventure at port. This time, realizing we were with no cash, we asked the restaurant we wanted to eat in, if they accepted credit cards. They said yes, so we were in again, for a shock when at the end of the meal they said that they did not accept credit. We were fortunately that they allowed us to go to a cash machine (paying the very expensive convenience fee!) and get the cash. We then went back and paid our bill.

So, bring cash. You may not need it but boy, it may save you from embarrassment and increase your ability to do and pay for want you want.

Next, cruise.....we know to bring cash.

Even though you are doing the excursions on your own, I'd strongly recommend making most of your plans/reservations online or by phone before you leave. In most cases a deposit will be required and they then have your CC info on hand to finish the transaction. At the very least you can ask ahead of time if they prefer cash or credit and you will know how to plan. Yes, you will need cash for tips because most of the excursions will have a "tip jar" out for you to express your "appreciation" if you had a good time. And, of course, taxi drivers expect to be tipped also.
