Why do people brag about being mean all the time?

I swear, there are people all over the internet who's smirk and glint in their eye just comes through the screen because of the glee about being mean. Why is that a badge of honor? Is it the way they were raised? What causes people to take joy in mean behavior and bragging about it?

Can you give an example? I've never seen anyone admit to, much less brag about, being mean. People claiming to be "honest" or "telling it like it is," sure.

Yeah, when ever I hear someone state that they "tell it like it is", my eyes roll, it's just another way to say "I say what ever I feel like, who cares if it hurts someone". AKA, a jerk.

LOL Save me from people who describe themselves as:

blunt
straight-shooters
straight-forward
tell-it-like-it-is
"that's just the way I am"
"I don't sugar-coat things"
right-to-the-point

I prefer my criticism with a little bit of sugar! :)

:thumbsup2

Shortbun, I just think they are mean and unhappy, I really do. It somehow makes them feel good or even better to say it, post it, etc.

It's always the same people, you can count on it. In fact, if I read something kind or caring from them, I usually have to do a double take and and surprised they have it in them.

You see it all over the net, MB and FB.

it makes people feel better about themselves if they put others down.

I've grown some very thick skin since the internets early years.:hippie:

I know someone here once said they were "meaner in real life" than on the Dis, but I can't remember who it was.

I think there are a few here who just enjoy being mean and nasty, of course MOST of them don't THINK they are that way, they're just "being blunt" or "telling it like it is", etc. like another PP said. It must be fun for them to be that way I guess...I don't know why though. :confused3 I can't imagine getting enjoyment out of intentionally being mean to someone, either in real life, or here on the internet.

It isn't just the internet but look at reality shows. WHO is always the main focus people like this....Bridezillas was the first I thought of and funny they always say the above statements.

I don't know but I sure don't need them in my life. I like happy and nice people.

In real life, I don't really socialize with people who are "blunt and tell it like it is."

Ick.

Liberty Belle 10-08-2012 07:10 PM

I don't understand it, either. As it reminds me of something people would do in middle or high school, it makes me wonder if it's some kind of stunted emotional growth or something. :confused3

Kennywife 10-08-2012 07:31 PM

Yep. ::yes:: I think there are some out there who are just bitter and angry about life and just want everyone else to feel the same way they do. Like what they always say....misery loves company.

I try not to and I am working on surrounding myself with positivity in life now rather than negativity.

Totally agree! Some people have to be right and will go to any length to prove a point or have the last word, even if that means mocking someone or hurting someone's feelings. We all slip, but to do it as a matter of course is something I don't understand.

I got my hand slapped by the moderator for calling someone out for being mean. I think they like the drama and somehow believe it keeps people interested. I personally could do without it.

I watch Dr. Phil sometimes and my favorite line of his is, "Do you want to be right or do you want to be happy?" After the past year, I think happy is in order!!!!! :cool1:
