2 Cool Cats hit WDW: a LIVE food review! (with pics, yo!) COMPLETE!
Hi, all! I decided that for reals and honest this time I'm going to do a food review. I keep taking pictures on our trips and then not posting anything! Enough of that. This time I'm doin' it LIVE! :laughing:
We're here at AKV Kidani from today, Jan 24, thru Jan 31, and I'll try to post a new update every night. For your convenience, below you'll find a list of (as of right now) where we're planning to eat, but if you guys know us at all, then you'll know we constantly change our minds!
Oh, right...you might wanna know who "we" are, mightn't you? Obviously there's me, CoolDisneyKitten :hippie:, and there's also my mom, CoolDisneyCat princess:.

PS: I'd like to apologize for the title. I watch too much Breaking Bad. You're lucky "yo" was the word I chose from Jesse's vocabulary.... :rotfl:
We arrived to check in at Kidani at around 11:30. We've never stayed over here before; Jambo, before it was called Jambo, but not Kidani itself. We were impressed with the CM standing outside to escort us to the check-in desk. It felt like we were staying concierge! :laughing:
We hung around a little while to see if our room would be ready, but finally we we decided we were too hungry to wait any longer. We debated several options, but in the end we decided to go to DTD and hit Wolfgang Puck Express. We hadn't been there in several trips, so it sounded like a good plan: something a little different.
I always get the same thing every time: the bolognese. The type of pasta has changed several times over the years, but it's always delicious.
Yums. I love the fact that I'm eating veggies, but they're all hidden in that delicious sauce. It's garlicky, savory, a little sweet, and really rich. Also, the portion size wasn't huge, which is really nice. I hate eating too much on a hot day; you end up waddling around like a stuffed goose and feel miserable.
I got the "tropical tea" as my bev, and it was an unsweetened mango iced. Very delish. :thumbsup2
princess: got the mac and cheese.

She really liked it: it was full of cheesy goodness, and the breadcrumbs sprinkled on top made a nice crunchy contrast. Last time I got mac and cheese here, it was different than this and not nearly so delicious. This dish was a very dry-style mac and cheese, which is the way Mom likes it. For me it was a bit *too* dry, but, ya know, it wasn't mine. :lmao:
She wasn't able to finish all of it, and she said she wished she'd gotten the smaller size. It was really rich and filling.
After leaving WPE, we FINALLY MADE IT to Ghirardelli. We've never been there before; it seems like the place is always closed for some sort of rehab. I snagged us a table inside, and then went to order.
I got the Mint Bliss
It has whipped cream, mint chocolate chip ice cream, chocolate ice cream, and dark chocolate fudge. Ohhh man. It was SO yummy. The dark chocolate hot fudge was super rich, and the mint ice cream was a great balance. I saved the dark chocolate square until last, but I couldn't eat it: I was too full of ice cream and chocolate! Oh, also, they have real whipped cream, and it's amazing.
princess: had the Warm Brownie Sundae
Brownie, vanilla ice cream, milk chocolate hot fudge, whipped cream, nuts, and a cherry. She thought it came w/ chocolate ice cream, which is her favorite, but the vanilla was so delicious that she didn't mind. She said the brownie was really good, and the hot fudge was killer. It was probably the best hot fudge I've ever had!
We're really glad we finally made it to Ghirardelli, and we'll definitely be back. They have so many great-sounding concoctions it was hard to even choose!

Spoodle's was our favorite WDW restaurant, and we were really disappointed when it closed. We finally tried Kouzzina for the first time on our last trip, and we loved it! We were really excited to return for this trip, and it didn't disappoint....
Our ADR was for 7:45, and we checked in at 7:29. We were seated at 7:30, but our server didn't arrive to take our drink order until 7:40. We had good service...when our server was there...but he seemed absent a lot.
We started with the Kouzzina Sampler w/ Prawns and Pork Souvlaki
It includes olives, spiced cashews, dolmades, tzatziki, hummus, and grilled pita. Mom's favorite was the tzatziki, but I...well, ok, I don't remember from last May if the tzatziki was spicy or not. I'm not used to spicy tzatziki: it's supposed to be cooling. I wasn't super crazy about it b/c of that.
My favorite were the shrimp. They're super flavorful and cooked perfectly. Last May we had the chicken instead of the pork, and the chicken was much better. The pork was quite dry.
The cashews were sweet/spicy, and the dolmades were good, too; they're not my favorite, but they were ok. The hummus was a bit bland; it was good w/ an olive, tho.
The bread service arrived at the same time as our appetizer.
The bread here is coated w/ sesame seeds and black sea salt. It's served w/ two types of olive oil--kalamata and Cretan--and the same olives that come w/ the Sampler. The kalamata olive oil is buttery, and the Cretan is light with a bit of a spicy aftertaste. They're both delicious, and I love the contrast between the olive oil and the salty bread.
For our mains, princess: got the spanakopita from the appetizer menu and a side of sweet tater fries.
Last May Mom said this spanakopita was the best she ever had. This trip she ate every bite and wiped the plate clean. She said the phylo was flaky and delicious, and she really enjoyed it.
I gotta tell you, kids: these were perfectly perfect sweet tater fries. They were hot, crispy, light, salty, sweet...perfect! :cloud9: She didn't finish them, but unlike regular fries, sweet potato fries are good cold!
I chose the wood-fired pork tenderloin.
Hum, just looked up the description on Deb's, and the setup I had was a little different. I had corn succatash (sufferin' spelling...) and I don't think the bread pudding stuff had zucchini in it.
Anyway! The tenderloin was perfectly medium. The succatash (if I'm gonna spell it wrong, I might as well be consistent) had corn, beans, bacon, and greens. It was salty and delicious. The bread pudding was sweet, and the crust on the tenderloin was spicy; put it all together and yummmm! :lovestruc
For dessert we decided to split the chocolate budino cake.
It was a molten-style chocolate cake. Here's a pic after I broke into it....
Look at all that warm, oozy chocolate! The outside was crispy and the inside was hot and delicious. It was sooo rich, and not too sweet. The ice cream was really light, and I wish there'd been a little bit more of it. Our server, Saiad, recommended this, and he was right. :thumbsup2
Overall, I was a little bit disappointed in our appetizer--there was too much spiciness for me, and not enough just plain flavor--but Mom really enjoyed it. We both enjoyed our mains, and the dessert was just heavenly. :cloud9:
I know that Kouzzina gets a lot of mixed reviews, but I urge you to give it a try and judge for yourself. It's yummy!

It wasn't a TAME lunch
I'm probably going to write a more in-depth review of the entire Untamed Lunch experience, so for now let's just focus on the food!
We got to Sanaa a few minutes before noon and checked in. The hostess took our names and made us name tags. We saw that there were four other name tags made, so we thought it would be a small group.
Not so much! We had a t-shaped table, and there were 16 ppl (including princess: and me), plus a baby. I know the info about the Untamed Lunch says "recommended for guests 8 and over," but except that to be completely ignored.
Anyway. We all got seated and our server, Simo, started the bread service. For the Untamed Lunch you get all the breads and all the dips. I didn't get a pic of the breads, but they're naan (the plain, tandoori-fired bread), onion kulcha (stuffed w/ cheese and onions), paneer paratha (a crispy cheese cracker), and pappadam (looks like the naan, but it's stuffed w/ something...I'm not sure I had any of this one).
Top row, l-r: garlic pickle, mango chutney, tamarind chutney
Middle row, l-r: red chili sambal, mint chutney, coriander chutney
Bottom row, l-r: cucumber raita, red pepper hummus, coconut chutney
The garlic pickle, which we've never ordered before b/c the word "pickle" usually makes us go :eek:, was our favorite. It was savory and garlicky and strange. The cucumber raita is a lot like tzatziki, and it was cool and delicious. The mint chutney was ok, and I didn't care for the coriander chutney much at all. We've had the red chili sambal before, and it's super spicy. Mom had some, but I didn't. She also liked the hummus, which I didn't try.
We decided next time we go to Sanaa, our dips for the bread service will be garlic pickle, cucumber raita, and the hummus. :thumbsup2
Next was the salad sampler.
from l-r: chickpea, cucumber, and tomato; roasted beets; watermelon, radish, and lime.
The chickpea was probably my favorite. It was in a light vinegarette type dressing, and the chickpeas were a nice texture. The watermelon was ok; I ate a few bites. The beets were...well. I'd never had beets before. They tasted kinda like dirt. Yeeaahh, so...won't be ordering that in the future. It was nice to try, tho.
Mom didn't really care for any of the salad choices.
Mains came next.
Shrimp w/ green curry, basmati rice, chicken w/ red curry.
We both loved these dishes! Mom has ordered both of these dishes as her entree on our previous trips. The shrimp were perfectly cooked, and the green curry is a bit creamier than the red. The red is spicy and flavorful, and the chicken was tender and delicious--not at all dry.
I ate every bite of mine, and Mom came close.
Next we enjoyed the dessert sampler.
chocolate cake, chai cream, and tropical fruit kulfi
My kulfi was the only one I saw with actual slices of strawberry on top. Everyone else's just had the strawberry sauce. Score!
Kulfi is sorta like ice cream, but not. It has a really delicate flavor, and I enjoyed it a lot. It was nice to have after the spicy entree.
The chocolate cake was ok. Chocolate cake, yanno? Not too exciting.
The chai cream...oh, where do I begin? We both love this stuff. It's amazing. Spicy and creamy and sweet...maybe my favorite dessert on property. There were people around the table not eating theirs, amazingly enough. I can't imagine not liking this stuff! Chai cream from Sanaa = :cloud9:
Sanaa is one of our favorite restaurants on property, and it's not disappointed us so far. The Untamed Lunch was an amazing experience, and I think at $49/person, it's not a bad deal at all. Like I said, I'll do a review on the experience itself a bit later on (I have pics on the camera that I can't transfer now), but the food alone was enough to get me interested!
I'll be back later tonight. We have a 6:45 Portobello ADR.

No rats, no spit!
Tonight we ventured into the wilds of DTD for a return visit to Portobello. It was insanely busy at DTD: 7 busloads of ppl were dropped off just as we pulled up. I mean, charter busses. Packed full. :scared1:
We arrived at Portobello around 6:30 for our 6:45 ADR. We waited maybe 5 minutes before being seated. Our server, Thomas, arrived promptly to bring us water, explain the specials, etc.
He quickly returned w/ Mom's unsweet tea and the bread service.
They serve rolls with roasted garlic and olive oil. You can see the exit sign reflected in the oil. :rolleyes: The garlic was tender and delicious, but the bread was just sorta blah. The olive oil and garlic were better on the pizza crust, which brings me to....
For our starter, we decided to order the Pizza Mercato.
It was...cheese...3 or 4 types of cheese, and one was fontina, but I can't remember the others; and pesto-marinated chicken. It was delicious! The crust was chewy and crispy, the cheese was ooey-gooey, and the chicken was tender and flavorful. This pizza did not last long at our table!
For her main, princess: ordered the ravioli.
It was two huge ravioli smothered in sauce. For me that would've been too much sauce, but she likes a lot--unlike on her mac and cheese! The ravioli were stuffed with cheese and spinach, and they were obviously homemade and freshly prepared. This was a great dish, and I enjoyed the few bites of it I had. Mom really liked it, too, but she couldn't come close to finishing it, and we brought the leftovers back to the villa w/ us.
I had the gnocchi.
It's topped w/ "Nonna's pork ragut," according to the menu. I have to say, this was the BEST GNOCCHI I have ever had. It was light and pillowy, just like gnocchi's supposed to be. I've had it before when the gnocchi were like little rocks, and it's just awful. There was a *ton* of pork on top, and the dish was very hearty and filling. I loved every bite, but I brought a lot of it back with me!
Oh, Mom said that while her ravioli was good, my gnocchi dish was better. Thomas, our server, also said that the gnocchi is his favorite dish on the menu.
We decided to skip dessert and went to Ghirardelli...again...and it was a dangerous journey there and back again.
Overall, Portobello was delicious. The bread was a little blah, but everything else was wonderful. We'll definitely be back! :thumbsup2
Tomorrow we have Tusker House breakfast, but we might be changing our Flying Fish to Jiko. We haven't decided yet.

Great reviews so far! I'm glad to see you had a great time at Kouzzina. My mom and I are going there for the first time this upcoming trip, and happy to see good reviews. We are also hitting up Ghirardelli, and those sundaes look delish! I'm drooling over that mint one, hehehe. Anyways, thanx for the updates and enjoy! :goodvibes

Thanks for the replies, guys! I didn't think I'd be posting another update until tonight, but we got back from AK a bit early, so here I am.
We started our day w/ an 8:10 ADR at Tusker House for breakfast. The place was pretty much deserted when we got there, but it filled up quickly. After downing some jungle juice, we headed for the buffet.
And now the one and only pic I managed to get at breakfast....
An underwhelming cheese danish, and one of my favorite things at WDW--banana bread pudding! I ate about 3 bites of the danish; Mom had one, too, and she agreed that they were tres blah. The bread pudding, on the other hand, was delicious. I ate every bite.
I had eggs, sausage, bacon, Mickey waffles, and some seasoned potatoes. Mom had the same, except no waffles, and she also had some yogurt w/ granola. My favorite part of the breakfast were the Mickey waffles. The lady was making them as fast as people were grabbing them, and they were sooo good. :cloud9: Mom's favorite things were the juice and biscuit and gravy. I forgot we had that. The gravy was really good; it had a different flavor than gravy I'm used to, and it was tasty.
We enjoy Tusker House breakfast early because we get that early entry into the park. The characters are fun, and the food is good. It's the second time we've done it, and we'll probably do it again.
On to lunch! We were planning on having QS, but the lines were really long, so we thought we'd see about getting a table at Yak & Yeti. We only waited about 10 minutes (at the bar) before we were seated.
We started w/ the pork potstickers.
According to the menu, these are served with a soy lime dipping sauce. The sauce was really tangy, and it needed some kick. I added some sriracha sauce, and that helped a LOT. The potstickers themselves were good, hot and crispy.
For mains, princess: ordered the tempura shrimp.
She didn't like the sauce that came with it--the menu calls it chili plum, but to her it tasted like sweet and sour. Overall, she thought it was a really bland dish. I gave her some of the pickled ginger from my plate, and she used our pumped-up-with-sriracha potsticker sauce, and that made it a whoooole lot better.
I ordered a side of egg rolls.
Wow, those are the biggest eggrolls I've ever seen! They were super hot, too, but not super flavorful, sadly. Also the wrapping was really thick. I didn't care much for the chili plum sauce, either, but when I first dipped an eggroll into the sauce that came w/ my tuna, and then into the chili plum, it was pretty tasty.
I also got (in case you haven't figured it out yet) the seared ahi tuna.
This dish was delicious. The tuna was perfect, the wasabi aioli was light and spicy, and the pickled ginger was probably the best I ever had. I wish they had this as an entree and I could skip everything else (except maybe the potstickers). You know what, though? This wasn't a dish that required the chefs to really *do* anything. Get some high-quality tuna, sear it a little, slice it...voila. The fish does the work for you.
I'm not trying to say Yak & Yeti has bad chefs. The food was all cooked perfectly. I'm trying to say they have bad *recipes*. Everything was bland and blah except the tuna, and that just tasted like good tuna. We had to doctor up everything we ate to make it have any spark or pop, and that's not entirely the point of going to a restaurant.
I said the same thing about Y&Y in another review, and my opinion hasn't changed: bland, boring flavors with no real zip or life. Is that really what Americans want??
Anyway. In our epic quest for flavor, tonight we're going to Jiko. Woot! :woohoo:
