How close to your vacation/arrival at MCO can you arrange for DME?

Not sure yet but we might have to change our arrival date to November 6 but won't know till a few more days. How late in the game can I book DME?
Thanks

Really?? WOW!! That's great news! My grandson's baseball team has made the playoffs and he's a pitcher on the team. As a 12 year old boy, pitching in the playoffs is way more important than being at Disney. Anyway, he and my son in law would only miss the first day but that's what might happen. We won't know if his team will play next weekend until we see if they win this weekend so not a lot of time to rearrange things. Sorry, TMI I guess but happy for him and happy that it won't be a hassle to arrange DME for my grandson and son in law.
Now on to seeing about canceling and rebooking the airline tickets if need be.

Just to be clear, you can certainly board the DME bus to your resort (only need your reservation number to checkin). However, without advance booking, you won't be mailed the DME packet that contains the luggage tags for resort delivery. You can either claim the bags yourself from the carousel and bring them with you on the bus, or I've read luggage might be able to be pulled/identified using your airline bag check tags (YMMV).

Congratulations and wish your grandson Good Luck in his playoffs. That's not TMI, that's fantastic information!

Thank you so much DVC California.
Actually my DD, myself and my 2 other DGS will probably have the luggage so no problem with that. Also, are you saying that they can board the DME to the resort as long as they have the resort reservation number? In other words they can just get on the correct bus (with the ressie number) without even having called ahead of time to make a reservation for DME? Like, just show up at the ME area after getting off the plane?
And again, thank you for your kind words. As a grandmother sometimes I can't help myself from just a little bragging :lovestruc

They have to have a reservation, but it can be flexible.

Thanks kaytieeldr, so I (they) would need to call DME ahead of time to make the reservation for them to use the ME bus, correct?

I realize that some have said you can just walk up, show your resort reservation number, and get in the bus. But, that isn't the way it's supposed to work. You are better off making the reservation.
As said already, you can call DME the day before you travel. No, you won't get the tags but you'll be in the system and won't have any issues.

I would call ahead of time to let them know. I have a confusing situation coming up regarding DME for my December reservation, one person checks out and another checks in mid-vacation. When I called and made my DME reservations, the CM said to just take care of switching the names on the room at the front desk the morning of the switch and then call DME and let them know the new arrival's name/flight that morning. Like someone else said, YMMV, but I would call and give DME a heads up when you know their flight and arrival. Good luck to your grandson in playoffs!

... one person checks out and another checks in mid-vacation ...
I would at least try to make the Magical Express reservation for the late arriving person several days in advance (if plans have crystallized).

If the phone reservationist does not "make a good catch" then you are home free. If s/he does then you explain that someone is checking out earlier that day when the latecomer is arriving.

Still, someone at the resort should modify the room reservation to include the latecomer on the day of the latter's arrival, when the person leaving earlier departs.

We will not rule out the possibility that the roving CM at the DME welcoming area sends the latecomer to the desk instead of directly to the bus queues. So another family member should be prepared to receive a phone call and reconfirm the room occupancy change which should have been completed by that time.,

When ordering or reserving or booking anything over the phone, ask for and write down the name and city of anyone you talk to.

I think the issue is that I can't add the late-arriving person to the room reservation until the first person checks out. MDE won't let me as the max occupancy is 4 on the room, and the original 4 adults are already listed and booked. AKL CL IPO didn't think DME could be used by the latecomer, but when I called the DME number the woman I spoke with said as long as it was switched in the morning at the resort and they were updated it would be fine. Now I'm nervous, is that not the case? I already knew the latecomer would have to collect luggage, etc...also if he gets sent to the desk it shouldn't be a huge deal, as long as I/AKL can confirm he's now on the room reservation, correct? I will definitely write down names next time, I even did the survey at the end of the call because she was so nice, but I really am terrible with names:)

I would just make the DME reservation for everyone on your original arrival day that way you are all set with tags and vouchers etc. DME is fluid on the arrival to allow for canceled and delayed flights so your son and husband could just arrive the next day and be transported based on that original reservation. However, I would probably just let a CM know when you check in that 2 members of your party were delayed and will be arriving the next day and they can make the changes to DME for you.

This is what exactly I would do. The boys can get on ME when they show up.

Make sure they have theor Magic Bands though it will be much easier.

Again, thank you all so much. One less thing to worry about.
I know I can always count on my Dis friends for any info I made need!
