How long does it take to get a DAS set up?

We are going to WDW with a large extended family (20+ people) to celebrate my parents' 50th anniversary. I would like to get a DAS for my son asap. However, one of the few "group" plans that we have is that on the first morning after our arrival, we're all going to head straight in to the parks and ride a few of my father's favourites with him. (It's a Small World, Dumbo, Mad Tea Party) I'd like to avoid holding the whole group up while I wait to get a DAS for my son. How long does it usually take to wait in line, get approved for a DAS (assuming that happens), have it hooked up to their bands and those of our immediate family, etc? If it's a significant amount of time, should I consider going in the night before? (Our flight arrives late afternoon.) If I do go in the night before, do I need to take all of my kids with me in order for their bands to be linked to the DAS?

It really depends on the number of people in front of you. You can always hope they are issuing them at Guest Services outside the park, but that isn't always the case. I know a lot of people wait until after the rope drop surge to go back to GS and get the DAS. Usually at RD, the lines are much shorter and the DAS isn't needed as much.

Also, you can usually only have 6 people on the DAS party at any one time. If your group is larger, you will need to figure out who will want to ride with him on the attractions you will need to use the DAS for. If you use a DAS, you may need to plan to split the group.

Getting the DAS itself is usually only the work of a few minutes, but you will need the whole party there to be added. How long the whole process takes depends entirely on how many people are in front of you in line at Guest Relations.

I would suggest using the 3 prearranged Fastpasses each person can preschedule for the attractions you want to 'hit' right away and ones you want the whole group to go on together.

This post about DAS at WDW should help answer all your questions.

The first post in that thread is kept up to date, but don't read any of the further pages - they were written just before and just after DAS came into use.
The person you are requesting DAS for does need to be present. You will need to have either the tickets or the magicbands of the members of your group that you want linked to DAS; as long as you have those, you don't necessarily need the person to be present.
As was already mentioned, the usual total group authorized is 6. It's possible they may authorize for a few more in special circumstances, but it is very unlikely to have a group of more than 8.

If you go into the park to get a DAS, you'll need to use a day's admission to do so. There's no guarantee that a DAS can be done outside of the park. Sometimes you can get one at the outside GS, sometimes you can't.

WE got my son a DAS at guest relations at the international gateway there was no wait. I am guessing that from the time we started being helped and I explained what we needed until we were on our was was probably around 15 minutes.

It's really hard to get to International Gateway if you aren't staying at one of the nearby resorts though. Buses don't go from resort to resort, and there's no parking for anyone besides resort guests in that area. You'd have to go to HS and take the boat, or walk. Or go to a different park and catch a BC/YC or BW resort bus, walk through, etc.

But if you're staying at an EPCOT resort, definitely try IG.

We werent staying there but we took a cab to boardwalk had breakfast and then went to Epcot thru the international gateway. The cabs are surprisingly inexpensive and quick we use Mears. Its a peaceful relaxed way to begin the day.

Yes, but the OP was asking about going the night before - I guess they could try to get a dinner ADR at one of the resorts, and do it that way, but then they'd need a cab back, etc. And they are a party of 20+ people.

yeah that would be alot to juggle. Just fyi though there are always cabs waiting at the boardwalk. So we usually walk out that way as well grab some ice cream and catch a cab. I know that wouldnt work for anyone but thats how we usually do it.

It had taken any where from 5 minutes to 30 ( but every thing happens like there was a long line the CM needed to know my needs the iPad broke the wifi went down I am sure I am forgeting something ) but I think it normily takes 10 minutes

Took about 3 minutes, not counting the wait in line which of course varies widely. They asked what I needed, issued the DAS and set us up with our first attraction.

We had good luck at Guest Services outside of DHS too.

It looks like the waits aren't too prohibitive. :) We'll just go early in the morning on our first day heading to MK and hope we don't get stuck in a long line at guest relations. Thanks for the advice!
