"Even the Garbage Cans Have Flowers!"-A September 2016 Mother-Daughter TR!- NEW TR LINK 9/13!

Love the updates!

First, EPCOT is a good choice for your first day, especially if you plan to go back. I find the park so huge and exhausting that I like to split it up a little. Spaceship Earth is definitely my nap ride…We've been on when there wasn't a line and the kids asked to stay on and ride again, I'm like, "Sure! Longer nap for me!"

OKW was our first stay in 2006…my DS was 4 and DD was 2 and it just brings back so many memories. DS learned how to swim underwater in that pool…he loved it! It's a great place to stay. We actually got in a preferred room close to the check-in, busses, Olivia's and the pool. I agree with you about staying at the huge, spread-out resorts…We stayed at CBR once and HATED it :crazy2: and we were even staying in a preferred room there. It was just awful being soooooo spread out. I would (and have) stayed at POP before I would EVER go back to CBR! OKW is NOT like that at all. And the rooms are lovely and huge. I prefer being closer to the parks myself, but I wouldn't hesitate to stay at OKW in the future.

Can't wait to hear more about your experience at DS…I haven't been since it's been completely done :-)

I enjoy Living with the Land, but I can't get any of my family members on it. My kids remember the '90's version, Listen to the Land, and feel the new version just doesn't cut it. I think they're pretty similar other than the song not being used, but that's just me.

I love looking at different Disney resorts also, but it seems like there's never enough time. I have two students with parents that are DVC members. One has OKW as the home resort and the other has SSR. I agree that I prefer smaller resorts, which is why I'll stay at POFQ over POR anyday.

I love Living with the Land! Have you done the Behind the Seeds tour? It’s less than $20 and you get to check out all the behind the scenes of that attraction. We really enjoyed it.

I’m staying at Old Key West for the first time next month. I looovvvvvee breakfast at Olivia’s but never really explored much more than that so thanks for the pics! I may have four Olivia’s breakfasts booked for our trip…. They have the best breakfast potatoes.

I was just telling DH last night about my goal of staying at all the resorts on Disney property. And he asked, Why? (in a very bewildered voice)

Silly man, I want to experience EVERYTHING!

I second what @mindylee847 said - if you love Living with the Land you have got to do the Behind the Seeds tour! We just did it this last trip and it was GREAT!!

We did the exact same thing on our last trip of eating at Sunshine Seasons and then heading directly to Living With the Land :)

Great pictures of Old Key West! We're staying there for the first 5 nights of our trip coming up and I'm so excited! I have a breakfast and a supper reservation for Olivia's, I love everything I've read about it!

Looking forward to your next post, since I also have an ADR for T-Rex so I'm curious to read another review on it!

Our first on property stay was OKW back in 2010, so it holds a special place in my heart :) We had a wonderful trip and while I'm not opposed to staying there again, we haven't, and I don't see us staying there in the near future. It was good at that time and probably still is, but we've fallen in love with other resorts since then and prefer being closer to Epcot/HS or at least MK. I will say that when we were there, we ate quite a few times at Olivia's and it was great!
I hope you do eventually get to stay at all the Disney resorts, that's one of my goals, too :thumbsup2

Awww, that's awesome that OKW was your first Disney resort! Although POR (Dixie Landings at the time) was my first Disney resort, the Poly was the first one I vividly remembered, so that will always be very special to me as well :goodvibes I agree that while it is gorgeous, OKW is a bit out of the way. I will have to remember to make a breakfast ADR at Olivia's the next time we go to WDW! I've heard nothing but great things!

OKW does look nice but a little big. Disney Springs was a mess last time we were there too so it was so nice to see it almost completely finished!

Yep, OKW was huge and while we wanted to walk around it fully, we simply didn't have the time or energy! And Disney Springs was almost unrecognizable since the last time we went, it was amazing :hyper:

I love it and always have. I remember riding it on my first trip as a kid when I was 9 and even back then it made an impression on me.

Oh, look at you, being all cute and calling the 90's vintage. Nothing like making a guy feel old! :rotfl2:
But I get what you mean. It actually feels a bit like that for me, and that first trip I mentioned above, that was 1983, so there's some math for you!

Haha, I didn't even realize that I called the 90's vintage until you said that :rotfl:I mean, I also was born in 1994, so it's vintage to me (there's some math for you too)! ;) Wow, Disney back in the 80's must have been so different! Did you ride Mr. Toad's Wild Ride??

I want to live in that farm house. I don't know why I like that little scene so much, but I do.

Me too, it's so calm and tranquil! It reminds me of the musical "Oklahoma!" In addition to all things Disney, I am also a huge musical theatre buff ::yes::

Love the updates!

Thank you! I agree; splitting Epcot into two days just seems so much more manageable since there are 2 sections of the park. I would love to be able to nap on Spaceship Earth, but I would be so mad at myself for missing it!

Wow, another person who's first stay was at OKW! :earboy2: How awesome that your DS learned to swim in their pool, I'm sure that's a great memory. We stayed at CBR last year, and while we didn't hate it, we were underwhelmed by it's amenities and overwhelmed by it's size. We were given a free upgrade to a pirate room and while the theming was awesome, it was all the way in Trinidad South and sooooo far away from everything! Plus, the rooms were smaller than we were used to, so that's good that OKW has large rooms as well :)

I enjoy Living with the Land, but I can't get any of my family members on it. My kids remember the '90's version, Listen to the Land, and feel the new version just doesn't cut it. I think they're pretty similar other than the song not being used, but that's just me.

Huh, I'll have to look up Listen to the Land on Youtube and see the differences! That's interesting that your kids have such a fond memory of the old one but not the new one!

We've never done POFQ but it's on our list; it's small and compact size is appealing! Now if only I could get used to the creepy Mardi Gras masks :crazy2: The lobby is stunning, however, and my sister and I have fond memories of going down the pool's lizard slide while we stayed next door at Dixie Landings :)

I love Living with the Land! I haven't been on it in so long though!

OKW looks really nice!

You should definitely go on it next trip! It is a nice, relaxing break during a hot day :)

It's funny that you say that, we actually saw a tour going on while on the ride and my mom said that she'd love to do it one day! Hey, just another reason to come back ;)

HAHAH that's awesome that you have 4 Olivia's ADRS, #Breakfastpotatoes4lyfe :rotfl:You'll enjoy OKW from what I saw; the pool is awesome and the grounds are beautiful!

I was just telling DH last night about my goal of staying at all the resorts on Disney property. And he asked, Why? (in a very bewildered voice)

WHAT?! Unacceptable :sad2: Fire him from the family! (JK, but give him a stern talking-to for me ;)) And yay, another advocate for Behind the Seeds! Sounds like it's a must-do!

We did the exact same thing on our last trip of eating at Sunshine Seasons and then heading directly to Living With the Land :)

Haha, great minds think alike ::yes:: I was impressed by OKW and I'm sure you will be too! Update should be coming up late tomorrow night or Friday afternoon :)

I want to stay at every resort too! We have a lunch ADR at Olivia's on Sunday, I can't wait to look around.

Wow, how awesome!! Please tell me how Olivia's is!! And have a great trip! :jumping1:

Did you ride Mr. Toad's Wild Ride??
YES!! And I loved it! Back in 1983 there was only MK and Epcot. My dad had got 2 day passes, thinking one day for each was enough. Ha! We were so pressed for time that everything was rushed, but I distinctly remember liking Mr. Toad so much that I begged my dad to go back on it, and it was the only ride I did twice. I'm so sad I never got to experience it as an adult (although sometimes that's a good thing). Maybe I need a trip to the west coast someday.

Ahh! That sounds so awesome! I would love to visit DLR one day, but I'm afraid that all I would do was compare it to WDW

Day 1: Part 5- “Look at this Stuff, Isn’t it Neat?!”

Hello Disfriends! I wasn’t sure where to cut this section off, so be prepared for a super long update!! :)

Where we last left off, my mom and I were just disembarking the boat from OKW to Disney Springs! We were on a mission: see the new Disney Springs and shop till we drop!

Shopping is the pinnacle of a girl’s trip, amirite? My dad despises shopping, so needless to say, our trips to Disney Springs have been a bit limited these past few years. Plus, with the inclusion of all of the high-end stores, we could not only shop for souvenirs but for cute clothes as well! EEEP!

image_zps7agbx2vh.gif

We got off the boat at about 6:40 PM, so we had a solid 2 hours before we had to be at our 9:00 T-Rex ADR. As soon as we got off the boat, we were totally turned around and had no idea where we were going! I must say, it was a bit of sensory overload at first! We wanted to see ALL OF THE THINGS! But, where to start?

Chocolate. Duh ;)

Not even a minute after we got off the boat, the sweet smell from the Ganachery pulled us in! We looked at all of the pretty desserts, and a nice lady gave us a free sample of their specialty chocolate of the day: white chocolate with pineapple and coconut. I’m not a huge white chocolate fan; the closest I usually get to white chocolate is those pink and white frosted animal cookies  But, I love pineapple and coconut, so I gave it a try. And, it was…

Weird. Very weird. It sort of tasted like hardened sunscreen :crazy2: My mom wasn’t a fan either, but we looked around some more before we decided to head out!

After peeking in a few other stores, we finally found the strip of clothing stores! We stopped into Lucky to look around and my mom ended up finding a really cute pair of jeans. All I can remember at this point was how tired I was!! 4 AM was creeping up to me really fast and I was starting to get sleepy. Plus, I didn’t find anything I liked in Lucky and I was just hanging around and sitting on the couches while my mom looked. But, I pushed through! My mom tried on the jeans and they looked great on her, but she said that she’d think about it and maybe get them when we came again on Thursday. I think she did that because she knew how tired I was, what a great mom :goodvibes

To try and wake me up, we decided to go into Vera Bradley. We are huge Vera fans; we probably have 10 bags by them! We also looked in Tommy Bahama to see if we could find something for my dad, but nothing stood out to us.

Then, while window shopping at Sperry, we came across this beautiful sight….

image_zpsbn4ikgcm.jpeg

I know, we’re so basic :rotfl: The closest Lilly Pulitzer store to us is in Chicago, which is 2 hours away, so we were in heaven! We have always loved their clothes but haven’t bought anything because we prefer to try things on before purchasing. Well, this definitely woke me up!

We spent a good hour in there trying on clothes :bitelip: We made friends with two really nice salesgirls who helped us so much! I wanted to buy a formal dress because I have a few weddings to go to this year, but all of their formal dresses were very summery! And anybody who has been to Wisconsin knows that Wisconsin does not = summery :sad2: So instead, I looked at casual dresses! My mom saw a dress on the rack that she instantly loved:

image_zpstmhnba8i.jpeg

It looked amazing on her, so she bought it! I also found a cute t-shirt dress that was sooo comfortable:

image_zpsxu3kzpgt.jpeg

After our successful trip to Lilly Pulitzer, we had only about 45 minutes before our ADR. I was on the hunt for my Dumbo Magic Slider, so we asked the nearest CM where they carried MagicBand accessories. She said that they were located at Disney Pin Traders, so that’s where we headed! I found it right away and we bought it; I loved how it looked and I was so happy :dumbo:

image_zpsqzmpncwd.jpeg

Decorated MagicBand = complete! We still had about a half hour, so we looked inside Tren-D, The Marketplace Co-Op, and World of Disney to pass the time. Tren-D is such a beautiful store!

image_zpskynm2bdr.jpeg

At the Marketplace Co-Op, I looked through the machines that make customized phone cases. I was thinking of buying a new phone case since the one that I have is getting old, but there were soooo many choices! It was overwhelming! There were about 4 that I really loved, but I couldn’t narrow it down :sad1: So, I decided that I would think on it and revisit the machine on Thursday!

image_zpslto4nf1f.jpeg

By this time, it was 9:00, and we were ready to eat at T-Rex! When thinking of an arrival-day dinner, this was the first place that came to mind. We love the Rainforest Cafe, so we were excited to eat at the dinosaur version! :)

We walked up the the restaurant, and it was MOBBED. Disney Springs in general was pretty crowded tonight because it was Labor Day weekend, but holy cats!! There were people everywhere outside, and we were worried that we would have to wait for a long time!

image_zpshwdapq3q.jpeg

But, the Disney gods were good to us and our names were called only 10 minutes later :woohoo: When the hostess was leading us out of the crowd, a random middle-aged lady grabbed me by the arm and pulled me back. I shot her a look like, “What gives?!” She proceeded to snap, “Um, what time was your reservation for??” I answered and she said, “Well, ours was for 8:50, so we should be seated before you.” All of a sudden, her adult daughter comes up behind her and starts apologizing profusely, and our hostess whisked us away before we could even say anything back! Whew!

image_zpsjbfy0rkd.gif

Seriously y’all, Disney makes people crazy ::yes:: My mom, the hostess, and I had a good laugh about it while we walked inside! Soon enough, we were seated in the coral reef section!

image_zpsimvjxfmk.jpeg

This brought flashbacks from last year, since we ate at Coral Reef on our very first night :goodvibes We sat right next to the aquarium, and had this awesome view:

image_zpsbtkoimeo.jpeg

Our server arrived shortly after, and she was adorable! She was a CP member and was so friendly and bubbly! She took our drink orders, and my mom ordered the Caveman Punch while I got the Tropical Cotton-tini.

If you read my PTR, you’ll know that I was very excited for this drink. I LOVE cotton candy and I LOVE rum, so what could go wrong? :cloud9: It came out with an adorable red shaker that was mine to keep! It started out as just a glass filled with cotton candy, but once she poured the mixer in, the cotton candy dissolved.

image_zpsuisxmukd.jpeg

It was sooo yummy. But very dangerous; I couldn’t even tell that there was alcohol in this :rotfl2: We ordered our food once the drinks came; my mom got the Chicken Flatbread and I ordered the Pork-asaurus Sandwich with a side Caesar Salad. While we waited for our food, we called my dad again and enjoyed the scenery. We loved this little guy who kept swimming by, we kept calling him the “unicorn fish” because of his little horn :cutie:

image_zpsyidlojeg.jpeg

About 25 minutes later, our food finally arrived! We were hungry!

image_zpsjo6h6maz.jpeg

And it was…..meh :sad1: I am usually not picky when it comes to restaurant food; as long as it’s warm and somewhat flavorful, I am content! But, my sandwich was ice cold and tasted really gamey; almost like it wasn’t cooked the whole way through. I ripped apart some of the pork, and sure enough, the middle was bright pink :crazy2: Coupled with the fact that it was cold, I didn’t want to risk getting food poisoning on our first day at WDW. But, hey, it’s all good! I have a salad too! But sadly, the salad wasn’t very good either :sad2: The dressing was watery and not very flavorful. I really hate writing bad reviews, but we are both easy to please and my mom agreed that my food was icky. So, we split my mom’s flatbread, which was hot and yummy!

Since it was a madhouse in there, we chalked up the food to how busy it was! We also saw that the table next to us sent their food back, so we were glad that we weren’t alone. We didn’t send my food back, but I think the waitress got the hint when we declined a box and my whole sandwich was still on the plate!

Hey, no harm no foul! I will probably still eat at T-Rex again; I loved the atmosphere and decorations! It’s very quintessentially Disney :) Plus, my drink was delicious!

After our underwhelming meal, it was about 10:30 PM. We looked back in World of Disney for a while and also checked out the Lego Store! I sent this picture to my boyfriend, Tom, who is a huge Toy Story fan!

image_zpsnqa04zjw.jpeg

We were getting tired, but we knew that before we left, we had to make one last stop….

Goofy’s Candy Company!! We were itching to make our own treats! We had never tried this before but after reading about it on the DIS (thanks guys :thumbsup2), I figured that this was a must-do. This was my checklist:

image_zpsljrmdxzz.jpeg

And this was Mom’s

image_zpswj8ypcr4.jpeg

While we watched the worker make our treats, we also bought a bag of saltwater taffy to bring home to Tom’s mom. She had asked me to because Florida has the best saltwater taffy, and she’s absolutely right! Finally, our treats were finished! We didn’t get a picture of Mom’s caramel apple, but here is my Rice Krispy Treat.

image_zpstftlcour.jpeg

:earseek: YUM!! Treats in hand, we finally made our way over to the bus station. There was a band on our way out playing the song “Time Warp” from Rocky Horror Picture Show, so of course, we had to stop and sing/dance along :cool1: By the time we got to the busses, it was about 11:20.

We were sharing a bus with the Polynesian, and there was only one other family in line. Mom asked how long they had been waiting, and they said about 10 minutes. Ok, a bus should be on it’s way soon, right?!

NOPE.

OMG you guys, it was absolutely nuts! The queue started to get more and more crowded, but no busses for the Poly/GF were found. We actually saw 4 busses for Old Key West come through!! The people in front of us were starting to get mad, and every time a bus passed by our line, the whole crowd boo’ed!

It was so funny, everyone in the line was so ticked except for me and Mom. We had been up since 4 AM, and at this point, we were absolutely delirious and slap-happy! We were sitting on the ground, eating our treats, and laughing at everything :rotfl2: Even though the situation was less than desirable, it is such a fun memory.

Finally, a whole 50 MINUTES later, a bus finally pulled up! We all hooped and hollered as we got on the bus. By this time, it was about 12:15, and it still took another 30 minutes to get back to the GF since traffic was crazy. My mom fell asleep for awhile on the bus, but I woke her when it was finally time to get off. It was almost 1 AM by the time we were off the bus. But hey, the late hour meant that we could get deserted GF lobby pics!

image_zpsw1ug6jr2.jpeg

This was probably my favorite picture that I took the whole trip. It looks so elegant and I love the fresh flowers in the lobby. It's currently my phone background as well :goodvibes

On our way back to the room, we snapped some more pics of the GF at night. Gosh, this hotel is stunning!!

image_zpsoc8lf0c8.jpeg

The Polynesian Resort across the water.

image_zpsl3nolmwv.jpeg

The lobby of our building: Big Pine Key.

We finally got up to our room at 1 AM. We opened the door and were greeted by...Disney music???

Mom and I walked in and instantly started squealing! I had totally forgotten the fact that the GF gets turn-down service every night!!! The Disney music channel was playing in the background, and our pillows were fluffed and garnished with Disney chocolate.

image_zps79myvdja.gif

It was so beautiful. It really solidified the fact that our vacation had begun!!

image_zps4tm9yue9.jpeg

In other happy news, our suitcases had also made it from DME. Even though we didn’t want to, we knew that we needed to unpack everything into the dressers. Nothing is worse than living out of a suitcase! By the time that we were done unpacking and all showered, it was 2 AM! :scared1:

We both settled into bed and quickly realized that our 9 AM FPs and dreams of making rope drop weren’t going to happen. So, I switched our Peter Pan’s Flight 9:00-10:00 FPs to 7:50-8:50 PM. I asked my mom if this was okay, and she literally fell asleep mid-sentence! Her sentence sort of sounded like this: “Peter Pan….Space Mountain...Rope Drop….T-Rex.” :rotfl:

Well, if this wasn’t a sign that we should hit the sack, nothing was! I fell asleep instantly, with visions of Cinderella’s Castle dancing in my head…

Ewww…Sounds appetizing! Not sure that was the taste they were going for :rotfl:

Their clothes are amazing! But a little too expensive for me! The only Lilly I own is my datebook! Your new dresses are adorable though!

We got our customized phone cases at the store as you exit Space Mountain…probably too late for this tip now...

Super disappointing! We've never tried T-Rex, but we aren't huge RFC fans. We used to have one nearby but I stopped going when they took my favorite salad off the menu because it was the only thing I really liked there. They've since closed anyway and I don't miss it :wave2:

Goofy’s Candy Company!!
image_zpstftlcour.jpeg

That looks so yummy! You definitely cannot leave DS without stopping there!!

Great update!!

Ugh! Sorry! I totally messed up and inserted my comments into your post, and I don't even know how to fix it!:rotfl2:

Ugh! Sorry! I totally messed up and inserted my comments into your post, and I don't even know how to fix it!:rotfl2:

Instead of quoting my whole post and adding quotes in, you can just highlight the specific sentences you want, and then the option to +quote wil pop up, and just click that each time to add to multi-quote :)

I can imagine how tired you were getting! I'm glad you guys found things at Lily Pulitzer! AND found your Dumbo slider, so cute!

Wow, what a rude lady at T-Rex! I would have been so annoyed!

I had a drink similar to yours one (I'm also obsessed with all things cotton candy) and you are so right, VERY dangerous because it's hard to taste the alcohol!

I'm sorry your meal wasn't good :( At least you made up for it by going to Goofy's!

I can't believe you had to wait so long for a bus! It's great that you made the best of it.

You guys had such a long day! Good idea ditching the rope drop plans! Can't wait to hear about MK!!

Weird. Very weird. It sort of tasted like hardened sunscreen :crazy2:

<shudder> Ugggh. I had a similar experience at Ample Hills Creamery.

I really hate writing bad reviews, but we are both easy to please and my mom agreed that my food was icky.

At least you had some room for a yummy Goofy treat! And something to do while you waited in that bus line...

Finally, a whole 50 MINUTES later, a bus finally pulled up!

....which is SOOOO ridiculous. No, just no. You guys are so awesome to be so chill when you were so tired. That would have been the end of me!

Mom and I walked in and instantly started squealing! I had totally forgotten the fact that the GF gets turn-down service every night!!! The Disney music channel was playing in the background, and our pillows were fluffed and garnished with Disney chocolate.

Ahhhhh! I wish every deluxe would do this!! That would be heaven to come "home" to every night!

Great update! I have yet to eat at T-Rex. I've figured that it's basically the same as eating at Rainforest Cafe and I've been pretty frequently to the one at Gurnee Mills. I figure when I have a kid I'll have to check it out, but until then I'll pass. But you're drink and that flatbread look awesome!!

The Ganachery was smaller than I thought it would be. I don't like white chocolate either and that sounds gross :crazy2:

But, the Disney gods were good to us and our names were called only 10 minutes later :woohoo: When the hostess was leading us out of the crowd, a random middle-aged lady grabbed me by the arm and pulled me back. I shot her a look like, “What gives?!” She proceeded to snap, “Um, what time was your reservation for??” I answered and she said, “Well, ours was for 8:50, so we should be seated before you.” All of a sudden, her adult daughter comes up behind her and starts apologizing profusely, and our hostess whisked us away before we could even say anything back! Whew!

Crazy people :rotfl:

Hey, no harm no foul! I will probably still eat at T-Rex again; I loved the atmosphere and decorations! It’s very quintessentially Disney :) Plus, my drink was delicious!

We ate at T-Rex and found the food only okay, but the atmosphere was pretty cool.

Finally, a whole 50 MINUTES later, a bus finally pulled up!

omg that's awful

I've been lurking along and I couldn't help but chime in after I read about the lady grabbing your arm- like what the heck?! Disney makes some people so entitled! Hey, be mad- that's cool, I would be too if my reservation was first but don't be grabbin' people! NOT COOL, ya weirdo!

Anyways, thoroughly enjoying your report!

Loving your report. I'm planning on taking my daughter on a mother/daughter trip in a few years when she is 12 so it's really nice seeing you and your mom enjoying some quality time together.
