Sun Pass Purchase

Would it be easier to purchase a Sun Pass instead of dealing with the headaches of stopping for tolls or the hidden charges from the rental companies? From what I understand, you can use them in rental cars. We vacation a lot in Florida, so I've been thinking about purchasing one.

yes, get the $20 version (the portable), you can order thru the website and get it in a week or so. Set up your account b4 you travel

then get the free APP. Adding a rental car thru the app takes about 90 seconds

Does anyone have an update on when we'll be able to use EZ pass in Florida

Yes. I ordered the $5 version and have used it on 6 or so trips! SO easy to add the rental as soon as you know the plate and you're off and running!

The $5 stick-on pass is supposed to be stuck to the windshield of one car and not moved to another one. I know people have reported success in taping it to the windshield, but you should know that you will be in violation of the user agreement if you do so.

I got the more permanent one a few years ago. The only tricky thing can be when I am alone, adding the rental car to my account via the phone app. The issue being that sometimes I cannot connect to the site on my phone quickly while still in the parking garage. A few times I got stuck on a line waiting to exit, and got it done it done then. But last time it was not going thru, so I went into the commuter lot (and I will say, the commuter lot after dark is a bit creepy).

Before I leave NJ I check my balance and make sure I have about $10-15 on there.

If I had a passenger, or if I was not driving, it would be easy of course.

I didn't realize that, thanks for the info.

We love our Sunpass! The tolls are also a little cheaper with Sunpass. Just keep checking your credit card used for the car rental as we have had a few times where we were charged for a toll plus the rental company service charge even though we have a Sunpass. National is good- if you call them and tell them you have a Sunpass (I emailed them my transaction activity from the Sunpass site) they will credit you.

I had the same problem. I couldn't connect while in the garage but went to the commuter lot. Luckily it was during the day.

Thanks for all of the replies. I'm going to purchase a Sunpass. Sounds a lot easier. I'll be traveling with my DS, so I can have him add the rental on for me while I drive.

So I am renting from Alamo and I know that if you just run the booths a picture is take and Alamo will charge for the tolls plus a fee. If I get the sunpass for the windshield, will I also have to tell Alamo or will the pass being there not trigger the camera to take the picture.

Seems like a stupid question but I need to ask.:-)

I've used my SunPass many times in rental cars without adding the car to the account without any problems. It might be a problem when the transponder wasn't read and they go by the license plate number.

We bought a Sunpass and it works great. No extra fees from the rental car companies and we get a slight discount on the tolls.

Here's how the Sunpass system works

you pass thru an electronic lane

First, the system looks for a transponder ... if it finds one the toll is processed ... case closed

If no transponder is found, the system electronically photographs and reads the TAG.

Next the system looks to the SUNPASS database of registered TAGS, if the tag is found the toll is processed on that SUNPASS account. Note that the database includes all the registered tags for personally owned transponders and FLEET PROGRAMS, but check PERSONAL first. This is why it is to your advantage to register the rental tag with SUNPASS ... the system CAN burp but looks to the files b4 saying "no valid account found" or passing the toll to the rental companies 'third party'. Several times I have driven PC to Orlando w/out even having my transponder in the car but the tolls show up normally in my statement ....

Note that with a rental (major companies) there is always a valid account because of the fleet system .... all extra fees are from the rental company and the fleet handler ... NOT FLORIDA

{a side bar here .... what if there is no valid account and it is MY car? It depends on whether CASH was an option. If cash WAS an option, using the TAG information you get a toll violation in the mail {note that you CAN head this off ... GOOGLE IT}. In places like Miami where tolls are ALL ELECTRON the system assembles a once a month bill and sends it to you based on your tag info. A SMALL service fee is added ... SMALL. NO VIOLATION results, unless you ignore the bill}
