Our Crazy Holiday Trip (late November 2016) - update 8/16

Finally pulled the trigger! I bought our tickets a few days ago (before the corporate discounts go away). $1413 for 3 "adult" and 2 "child" 4-day park hoppers. Crazy amounts of money, my friends. But I am very excited to know that we _ARE_ going, sometime before Dec 2017, when those tickets have to be used by. But really, we're pretty set on our trip the week after Thanksgiving. We briefly considered a 5-day pass (since it was only $67 total more) but decided we're going to be worn out after 4 days, and I'm -thinking- about doing Photopass for that same amount. We've never done that before, but it would be really nice with so many of us and so many little ones.

I added another night (so Monday through Thursday night) to our reservation at Stanford Inn & Suites so we can sleep there after our last night. Also, made reservations for a hotel room Sunday evening when we drive to Anaheim. The baby and I will stay at one of my friends' houses, but there are just too many of us to expect decent sleep at someone's house, (that also has several of its own kids) and we want to be rested for Disney. So we'll hang out with friends that evening, then DH will take the four older kids to the hotel to sleep. By sleeping at a friend's house we do save the cost of an additional hotel room, which isn't super cheap the weekend of Thanksgiving.

Did I mention that when we leave Anaheim on Friday (the 2nd) we are driving not home, but to Flagstaff, AZ (about 7.5 hours) and Saturday doing the "North Pole Experience" with MIL? That is her main Christmas gift to her grandkids (we have 5 of the 6) this year. So that week, before December ever really starts, is going to be crazy and fun and exciting, and the rest of the holidays might seem like a bit of a let down. I'll have to think of some ways to keep it special even though most of the spending will be done. (special in a way that kids will appreciate, not think is kind of lame, hopefully)

I've been reading through this thread:
http://www.disboards.com/threads/what-was-the-biggest-disney-meltdown-youve-witnessed.3497694/ and hoping we don't end up in it. DD6 is especially prone to tantrums and screaming, and I'm hoping she behaves herself... and that the adults do too, haha.

And I've started prepping the kids. We are starting to do more walking (super hot weather permitting) and I've been making a mental list of all the movies we should refresh (or see, for the DS2) on before we go. Any you would add to this list?
Dumbo
Alice in Wonderland
Peter Pan
Song of the South clips (on Youtube, Brer Rabbit and friends)
Pirates of the Caribbean? (-maybe- for the oldest - I think it's scary)
Fab Five cartoons, but they've seen a ton of those, and of Mickey Mouse Clubhouse
Winnie the Pooh
Tarzan
Monsters, Inc/University and the Toy Story ones (though those are basically on repeat if we let DS2)
A Bug's Life
Cars
Up
Tinkerbell movies
Frozen

Still hashing out the t-shirts. Constantly re-thinking and changing the red/blue Mickey/Minnie set and the Star Wars ones. I need 2 more for Mickey/Minnie and 1 more for Star Wars I think. It would be easy to just go buy some at the Disney Store, but I refuse to spend more than $6-10 a shirt, so I have to watch for ones that will work to be on sale. All of this is harder with a 6-week-old attached to me 20/7...

I wish I could get my son to watch more Disney stuff. He basically has 3 things he'll watch. Winnie the Pooh Heffalump movie, some other random Winnie the Pooh movie, and Brave. These are just movies I happened to see on t.v. and DVRed a while back. For whatever reason, he loves them. If we try to put on other things...he freaks out. We've tried Toy Story and he sort of watched part of it but didn't really seem to care. Same goes for various others - Incredibles, Monsters Inc, Robin Hood, Peter Pan. Also tried Mickey Mouse Clubhouse with no luck. :(

He does seem to like watching a couple Disneyland rides on youtube so I guess that's something.

We always watch a lot of ride videos on youtube leading up to our trips especially the ones that might be scary...snow white, pirates, haunted mansion..etc. I'm not totally sure if it had an affect or if my son is just braver than I anticipated because he wasnt really afraid of anything. The only time he got a little nervous was in Pirates during the fire scene. I was convinced he would be terrified of the haunted mansion but he ended up loving it...I think mainly because it was decorated as haunted mansion holiday at the time and that version seems a little less scary.

That pic of your little babe is soooo adorable!!!!

I forgot I never got to respond to these! I am on my phone so much more than on a computer right now (with the baby) and it takes me so much longer to write replies on my phone. :) That is frustrating. I haven't been able to get my little guy interested in "Cars," which I really want him to like, since Cars Land is so awesome. They just decide to like what they want, I guess! All my littles love watching rides on YouTube, and I think it really helped with them not being too scared of stuff the last time we went, and being willing to try anything. Pirates makes me nervous too. ;-) Actually, the Haunted Mansion creeps me out a bit, even though I enjoy the history and impressivity (not a word) of it all. I'm happy for HSM because I remember when I saw it, it had totally lost the creepy atmosphere. :)

When I try to get DD into Disney movies (she is a Pixar girl and the does not care much for the classic Disney animation style) what I do is pretend that I put the movie for myself. Eventually she comes around to see what I am watching or finding so funny. I usually have to do this a couple of times before she realizes she likes the movie and watches it even when I am not there.

I do that with my kids sometimes. :) I'll put on Mary Poppins, or Bedknobs and Broomsticks, or Alice and Wonderland (which they profess to be uninterested in) and they totally end up watching it.

What a lovely family you have...and congrats your little girl. Soo cute!
Enjoying your planning and looking forward to following along.

We are six weeks out! Our first day in the parks (Nov 28th) finally has posted hours today. Disneyland is 10 am - 9 pm, and CA until 8 pm. I am a little sad about that. I was really hoping it would be opening at 9 am, especially since my kids get up at 6 am without fail, and that will be 5 am in California. And we go to bed early too: 6 and 7 pm in CA. The older ones will survive and would end up sleeping in if they were tired enough, but the 2-year-old and the baby won't shift much on their schedule. I just want everything posted so I can plan our days! (A very specific plan for the first hour or two of each day and a loose one after that).
I have been trying to finish up shirts. I still need a red Christmassy one for myself (waiting until Christmas-ish stuff comes out in the Disney Stores in a couple weeks here), I need to turn two size 2/3 shirts into little baby dresses or something, and I may need a new blue or red Mickey shirt for myself. Still possibly looking for a different one for DD8. I don't love what we have. I might need a new one because the size I thought I was going to be by then isn't going to happen. I always struggle with making enough milk, and it's finally working with this sweet girl at almost 3 months, but only if I pretty much over eat. Apparently I need a ton of calories in order for my body to decide it's okay to make lots of milk. Oh well, it won't last forever. But it may slow me down a bit since it makes all that walking harder when I'm heavier. On the flip side, there are treats I will probably enjoy on our trip that I wouldn't usually eat... In the meantime, not eating sugar, to try to at least have some healthy eating going on.
I couldn't find a Star Wars shirt for DS2 that I liked, that was anything near our other colors, so I finally just made one. Here is the finished product, and our shirts all together. (except the baby's pink R2 shirt, that is somewhere waiting for me to sew it...)

And I couldn't find any kind of jacket that coordinated with the kids' Monsters, Inc. jackets, so I got crazy and decided to make one. And I couldn't find a little purple jacket anywhere (for a reasonable price), so I fudged it with a little soft jacket from Target.

Which I then killed (softness-wise) when I started putting "scales" all over it with the stamp I carved out of an eraser. (I said it was crazy). I still need to put some big fluffy yarn on top and make some eyes (probably just out of felt - no 4-month-old wants big google eyes attached to their jacket, and it needs to be functional, too) and then it should be done. Hopefully it will look like Boo in her monster disguise. :-)

I'm starting to try to figure what we need in the park, and which bag it needs to go in, and the simplest way to store everything in our (not large) storage space in the stroller in a way that we can pull a couple bags out of it (and hand them to older kids) for quick folding and unfolding for Toy Story or ART bus travel. With seven of us, there are just SO many details. My head feels like it's swimming all the time. I just know if I stay organized enough then we won't devolve into mass chaos quite so easily, and I really want this trip to be successful and enjoyable.

Ahh 6 weeks out! That means on Friday it's 6 weeks out for us.

I'm sad we're missing you by a day! LOL and then will be in Phoenix. You'll have to let me know if there is any "have to do" things there. We'll be there 3 full days.

Our current debate is between 3 days disney, 1 day nothing, 1 day Universal, or 5 days disney, or 4 days disney, and 1 day universal. Universal just adds $500 to the cost of our trip. But... Harry Potter! I don't know. Sigh.

Love the yoda shirt, boo sweatshirt and of course your little minnie is sooo adorable!

This family shirt stuff is stressful business huh?!? Its so hard to find things that work for all the different sizes, personalities...etc. love what you have tho!

I love the babies jacket, very creative! Great job on the shirts. I'm really enjoying reading your TR. We are leaving on the 17th of November and we can't wait either.

Somehow I'm not getting these notifications anymore. I have to remember to check back here for replies! I appreciate each of them. It's more motivating to post here when I know that someone other than me is enjoying it. :)
So, Paint the Night (which I have been dying to see since it came out, but the $$ just never presented itself) is coming back. For the week and a half before our trip, and then it starts back up again the day after we leave. Seriously? If I had known the schedule, I might have been able to plan our trip a little differently, but at this point, there isn't a feasible way for us to see it. I had to work through the depression for a couple days before I could be excited about our trip again. I'm hoping that since it's showing so much, but not THOSE 4 days, maybe crowds will be lighter. I would take that. I'm pretty sure I'll get a chance to see the parade some time, even if it changes a bit over the next few years.

In other slightly sad news, our DSLR was stolen out of our car last weekend when we were visiting my parents and forgot to lock the car overnight. It's a tiny little town, but apparently they've been having trouble with stuff like that lately, precisely because people often don't lock things. I was already unsure if we should take it or not (it's just one more thing to have to keep track of and not break), but now of course I want to have it!

Guys, 1 MONTH FROM TODAY, WE WILL BE IN DISNEYLAND! I am so excited!

Our kids would LOOOOVE Harry Potter World. But, our crew in general is still a little young for Universal, other than the oldest two, and it would add a lot of expense to this trip. We are hoping to do a trip there in a couple years.

Stuff to do in Phoenix? Hmm. It depends on what you're into! :) What part of Phoenix? The (easy) hike up to Hole in the Rock at Papago Park by the Phoenix Zoo is pretty cool. Organ Stop Pizza in Mesa is kind of neat, especially if you're into music or old movies. (really old movies - they have a Wurlitzer Pipe Organ there that is pretty amazing).

A bunch of my family will be there that week before you go! :) I'm excited that you get to see Paint the Night though! I really need to finish that jacket...

As an fyi, last time we were there, we and other folks made requests for various Disney songs...so cool especially with some of the extra effects they use for certain songs! He played Let it go, the Tiki Room song, old Mickey Mouse clubhouse song ( complete with mickey flag that dropped from the ceiling), some songs from Mary Poppins...etc but by far the coolest... The Imperial March!!!! Awesome!!

Haha, we just took our kids for the first time recently, and after the Disney selection I joked with my husband that we could just come back here more often and skip Disney, and it would be waaaaaaaay cheaper. ;-) I can make those jokes, since it's "my" Disney trip. If he made them, I would probably not be as amused. :)

My husband trys to use that joke on me often. I just give him....the look! Lol!!! ;)
I love places like that though to give me a little bit of Diz in between trips!:earsboy:

That sounds like a lot of fun. I'll have to see if my inlaws have gone there yet...they're really into pizza. LOL We're staying in Peoria. That's all I know. I've never been to Phoenix before :)

It's getting so close! Just over 3 weeks away. Aaaah!! :) I'm preparing more and more. Starting to buy a bunch of snacks. Thinking about doing PhotoPass-- (even though I'm not that excited about how I look currently, and hoped to mostly be behind the camera... but I'm going to be juggling the baby...) any thoughts? We just bought a big bag thing to go on top of our car so we can take more luggage with us without stressing so much. (Since I insist on fitting in the double jogger, and since we have 7 people in a Honda Odyssey...)
I finally finished Bridget's jacket. Because of all the paint, it's not terribly soft, but it is cute. The top part attaches with velcro, so it can be taken off to wash the jacket or taken off if we're wearing her and it's bugging us. I like how it looks, if not how stiff it is.

So, change in plans. (not in our trip, thankfully, it's still happening!) We were going to be at Stanford Inn & Suites, but we were really feeling like we might need a little more room with a 2-year-old that sometimes wakes up super early and a 4-month-old. (and the other 5 people...) Plus, I thought I had a hotel booked for the Sunday night we get into town for my husband and the older kids (I was going to stay at a friend's with the baby so I could spend some time with them but everyone else could get to bed early) and somehow I... didn't. I couldn't find an e-mail anywhere, so called the hotel, and they didn't have a booking. Weird. But my husband found an apartment (2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, and a kitchen/laundry) on AirBnB by the Angel Stadium that he liked, and which was a decent deal. We're still going to be spending several hundred more, which is frustrating, but I think it was a good decision. There are so many of us, and sleep is a little dicey even at home sometimes. There are things I'll miss about staying closer, but at least now I don't have to decide about ART vs Disney parking. We'll definitely be parking. I'm thinking of doing Mickey & Friends the first day and then probably Toy Story after that, just to switch things up. Plus I think we'll be ready to go early the first day (our kids get up by 5 am Anaheim time...) so coming in over by downtown Disney should be fun. And it will be really nice to already be checked in the day before so we can just worry about getting there Monday morning!
