Does anyone have experience with using a cane at the World?

I have OA in my knees and possibly my back. I also have back spasms that sometimes throw my back out or make it feel like it is going out. So I use a cane occasionally when I do go out to store or church. I have been to the parks millions of times but never brought my cane. What can I expect? I also have balance issues so the cane helps me from keeping upright lol. I am very nervous about using it cause I am afraid I will get knocked into or accidentally hit someone with it. Please put me at ease as this is stressing me out. Thanks!

I used a cane at WDW for several years. I still do, but now my condition has deteriorated to the point where I need an ECV and use the cane for short distances. No problem with the cane. However, I'd recommend looking into a folding cane. Lots of times you're in tight quarters and people will come along and trip over the cane (it's happened in restaurants, for example, when I forget to fold up my cane). I bought my first folding cane at CVS, then found one with an offset handle (more comfortable on my wrist) at Amazon.

you will be fine I think they treat cain like wheel chairs or ECV. for the most part I think if you can do the stairs at TSMM they will let you. on some rides the CM will take your cain and have it at the exit for you I know space motion is one of them some you can take you cain with you. have a great trip.

1) Expect walking in the parks as if walking anywhere else.
2) Sometimes use my cane. *
. . . On some rides, they take it from you and return it at the exit.
. . . On other rides, you just put it in your seating area.

* I like my cane, as it has a nice Knob on the top end, instead of just a handle . . . sort of a walking weapon and not just a cane. It comes in handy when I want to move someone out of the way. I have been favorably commented on it's style, plus it makes a nice self-defense device.

Thanks guys that put me more at ease. I am a person that used to walk 3-4 miles everyday. Trying to get back to it. I usually have no issues walking the parks as we are in them quite a bit but never had to take my cane. Gonna look into the folding option.

Keep in mind that many ride queues have hand rails and you can hold on that way, too.

If you are traveling with others I would suggest using one person to be ahead of you and one behind when you board certain rides in case you lose your balance. I think boat rides would the main rides that could be an issue. Test track can be a little difficult, too.

I am just home from 6 day trip using a cane. the CMs were very very nice about my cane use. on the few rides I could not keep cane with me they brought it to me for exiting. you do have to be aware of those around you but was not bumped into but did have a couple of mothers who did not get that I avoid putting cane down where they were putting their child. only time I had to use a wheelchair this trip was at Haunted Mansion and was able to use for stretching room. was not able to skip. have a great trip

One advantage with a folding cane (I sound like an advertisement for folding canes!) is that you can always keep it with you. In all my trips to WDW, and many attractions, the CM has never taken my cane-I just fold it up.

That makes perfect sense. I found some really nice folding ones on Amazon. Will be nice to have extra one anyway to keep in car. Thanks so much for all the replies. Has put me at ease. I went out last night to dinner and an adult and child were running through the area and the child fell right in front of me and I almost fell over her. If I had my cane would have felt safer probably.

But you can take bags on EE so that dos the make sense to me.

My aunt has a cane and the only time there was an issue was when she brought it out. It's folding with the bungee type cords inside so you kind of whip it. She was all the way over to the right at AK, walking along, and she whipped the cane out to open it. And nearly took out a CM who had chosen to walk along the foliage to the right of my aunt, to pass her.

My aunt did nothing wrong, but from then on looked around even when she was so far over there shouldn't have been anyone there. The kids all thought it was awesome and to this day we all call it her ninja cane.

And I hope that cm never decided to cut past a guest off the path again.

I use my cane all the time in the park. Sometimes I get it too far from me and have had it bumped by other guests. Never fallen. Just be aware of yours surroundings. My cane does not fold and I get along with the simple strap just fine.

I've used my cane numerous times, I find that people keep their distance. They are respectful, almost as though they are afraid I might fall. The "thrill" rides are the ones that will take the cane but are right there with it before the ride stops so you can have it to disembark with. Even BTMR you'll be on the "right" train and end up unloading on the left side but there is always a CM waiting with my cane. Looking directly at me (guess they give a description of what I look like).

I have to use an ECV but I also bring a folding cane that fits into the basket on the ECV. I bought the expensive folding cane on TV and then bought one at Walmart for half the price and they are basically the same.

I use both an ECV and a cane, but because I'm fluffy the folding canes that I've tried never really felt sturdy to me. THis next trip, I paid a few extra bucks and got a cane holster for the back of my ECV, which will take care of where to put it when I'm traveling. When I'm using it in queue, I don't have a problem handing it off until the end of the ride...my biggest issue was holding it while driving. Now I don't have to do that! :)

I think they must give a description. I've had CMs walk right up to me.
