Roam Mobility

I have had terrible service with Roam in Las Vegas two years ago and now Michigan International Speedway this past weekend. I thought maybe their service was better now so tried it for MIS but I had no service 95% of the time. I was planning to use them for WDW next week but since my husband and son will be staying home I kind of want service lol. I am now thinking I will just purchase the Telus 30 day travel plan but before I do that, has anyone used Roam lately at WDW and did it work?

The last 18 months I have not had any issues with over 5 visits, but with my old Nexus 4 connectivity (either back then or with that phone) was a lot poorer. I have found as WiFi has become readily available everywhere in the parks and if staying on-site, the need for data has greatly dropped and if having a free or available voip client, one could actually do without while on-site.

That's disappointing to hear. I just got the Sim card and was planning to use it in Orlando in October. We've used the Telus travel pass in the past, and maybe we should just stick with that. I guess it won't hurt to give it a try. I can always add the Telus pass when I am down there if it's not working. I have a dual SIM phone too, so it's really easy to switch from one to the other.

We've used ROAM a couple of times now in the States and have not had any issue with it. I can't get coverage with them when I'm off the interstate in Upstate NY but I knew that going into it. We had good coverage all the way to Chicago and back last summer (while on the US side). Coverage looks to be solid throughout most of Florida. I plan on using it the December when I'm there for calls back home.

I picked one up when i was heading to Philly last year (on a BUS stupid stupid STUPID) and had zero issues, worked like a charm. When we had our spur-of-the-moment trip to Disney in January i just topped it up and again, no problem! I picked up one of their little Breeze phones because they are dual-sim and the phone is unlocked on the Rogers network. I just needed to switch from one to the other at the border. Loved it! Already have it set to roll for our upcoming January trip. They have a great code for ParknFly BTW

Well I am hopeful again! Sounds like it should be good enough for our uses. We would only call home in an Emergency. Mostly I just want the ability to check emails and the internet and send some texts.

The only word of caution I have about Roam is that you need to use it every 6months for at least 1 day or you have to get a new sim card and phone #. This can be as simple as just purchasing one day of airtime to keep the phone active. It's just something you should be aware of.

Once you've done that you can even just keep going in and adjusting the activation date on the plan --- I've got one day sitting there (just the cheapest talk/text) and i keep bumping it out. It's now set to kick in our first day. You can do that as often as you like and it keeps the Sim active :D

I've been to Vegas a few times in the last 3 years. No complaints about Roam Mobility... especially on the strip.

I was in LA from a cruise docking in San Pedro last December.... again no complaints. However, I did not go into WDW.

Because I'm in America a few times a year... the 6 month expiry on a $6 SIM is a non issue for me. Get the two pack!

Telus recently introduced "Easy Roam" where for $7 a day.... you can use your unused Canadian data.

Personally, I prefer Roam Mobility for my America travels. It's more data generous for a high data user. However, when cruising in Alaska..... Telus's Easy Roam is better because Roam Mobility lacks coverage.

Excellent. I was going to have to do the 1 day spend just weeks before our next trip. So I sign up for one day say Nov 5 (this keeps my sim active) then on Nov 4 can I bump it out to say Nov 26?

Hmmm, I don't know why I have such terrible luck with them! In Vegas, on the strip, I ended up having to switch over to Telus as I had almost zero connectivity with Roam. Maybe I will purchase a one-day plan and if it works at WDW I will top it up from there. If it doesn't work this time, I don't care if the SIM expires because I will never use them again :)

Used two phones using Roam Mobility last week at Disney. Texting, internet surfing and phone calls to and from Canada and USA all worked well.

Just a heads up, one phone had not been activated on a Canadian phone plan (new Nexus phone), couldn't use it to call Canada (could receive Canadian calls) but otherwise was fully functioning.

Disney wifi was good at parks and resorts but was down on occasion.

Yup, that's what i've done .. from their website (which can be a whole lot of circular movement)
Does My Roam SIM Card Expire

Yes, but not for a long time! If you use the Roam Mobility service at least once every 6 months, your SIM card will remain active, and you'll keep the same US phone number. If you're not planning to travel anytime soon, you can schedule your plan to start up to 6 months in the future, then go back and reschedule it later.

But there's also this little tid-bit to remember
When you top up, your new plan replaces your existing plan; any remaining time or data can't be rolled over into your new plan.
So i only make my "keeping my sim card alive" for one day --the day before we leave i will make sure my credit card # is stored on my account and then just top up via text once my one day is over! Easy peasy!
If i'm not planning a trip i will just go in and push it out as further.

To clarify.... which hotel are you staying at? Does it make a difference indoors and outdoors?

Some phones require an APN configuration... is your phone unlocked?

I will be staying at Pop. Doesn't make a difference indoors or out. It is possible at MIS there maybe was too much metal interference (campground with lots of RVs and the stands at the track made of steel) but that didn't seem to bother anyone else's phones. My phone has been configured and is unlocked - it has worked with Roam the odd time but very inconsistent and not at all reliable. Oh yes, and I cannot use data and texting at the same time which is another baffling thing - if I have check off "turn data packet on" on my phone, which they told me I had to do when I called Roam, I cannot receive or send texts, so if I want to use data, I have to switch back and forth!!!

So in my specific case if I sign up for 7 days on Nov 4 (that's about when my 6 months is up) can I just schedule my start date for Nov 26 (start of trip)? or do I have to schedule a start date for Nov 5 (say) and then reschedule to Nov 26?

I had no issue with the way their system worked when we only had to use it once per year. This is my first time going through this new change just want to make sure I do it right.

The way i read that,i have NO idea how to answer your question. BUT going on personal experience .. i got the email early July telling me my card was expiring, added a day the furthest out the system would let me and then i just bumped it to our actual departure day. I checked my account just now and it's still showing it as active -- guess i'm good to go.

What type of phone are you using jtdl? One thing to be aware of is that different carriers use different frequencies, and not all phones offer the same frequency bands. Of the 4 or 5 bands that my Galaxy SIII phone supports (there are many, many models of SIII, each supporting slightly different frequency bands for different carriers), only one is common to and supported by the Roam Mobility carrier (T-Mobile). Now that was still enough to get reliable service at Disney. It is possible if your phone is older, or is a Telus model that doesn't use compatible T-Mobile frequencies, that it is having problems finding an available tower that it can talk to. When you switched back to your Telus SIM card in Vegas, did you notice which US carrier you connected to? It is all a little complicated, but if you research it you can find the frequencies supported by your phone and those used by various US carriers fairly easily with an internet search.

I have now switched to Roam Like Home on Rogers because they roam on multiple networks in the US; that allows more connection options and I notice my phone most often connected on AT&T, although sometimes on T-Mobile (which is Roam's network carrier). Service is better this way, no additional number or worries, and roughly the same cost as Roam Mobility.

Thanks for the info. I will wait until just before my sim card is about to expire to set up the plan for my November trip.

Well your explanation makes the most sense from anything I have heard from the Roam support people - thanks. I am pretty sure I saw T-Mobile on my phone this past weekend in Michigan the very few times that Roam did connect but I really am not 100% sure. I have been using an older Samsung GSIII as I didn't think the Roam SIM card would fit in my newer iphone, but when I looked into it this afternoon I noticed the outer edge of the SIM card can be removed in order to fit my iphone. So I am going to order a one day plan for our arrival day at WDW and if it works with my iphone then I will extend the plan, if not I will use the wifi and activate the Telus travel plan.
