Air Canada Rouge, how was your experience?

I always book direct flights. This time the only direct flights between YYZ and MCO are run by Air Canada Rouge. I have read some negative reviews about it. Is it really that bad? DD and I are both 5'9". Thanks in advance for your insight!

I thought it was fine. Nothing too special, but not horrible like some folks think it is.
We were on a Rouge'd 767, in the middle row of 3 and I was fine (I'm 6'0) but didn't have a whole bunch of leftover space; although the guy who was like 6'4 looked pretty cramped and uncomfortable. The inflight WiFi entertainment worked well, although the content is older, it served its purpose. Luckily YHZ-MCO direct hasn't been Rouge'd yet. :)

I hate Rouge. If it was a lot cheaper, I wouldn't mind so much, but you're getting less space and less service for the same AC pricing. We always go WestJet now, unless we have no other choice.

We always choose Westjet over AC too, but if it's your only direct option I'd go with it. They aren't that bad, just basic, but then I don't rate regular Air Canada anymore either - they used to be my first choice but (imo) their customer service has gone out the window, especially when compared with WestJet

When are you flying??? WestJet has always offered direct flights from YYZ to MCO ... i just checked the dates i kinda guess from your ticker and it's showing 2 direct flights. I had the choice of both when i was booking last year and thought maybe 5 minutes after i read the reviews and peeked at seat guru .. NOPE WestJet for us, yes it's only 3 hours but not how i want to start and finish my trip.

It depends in part on which aircraft you are on. The Airbus 319's have an inch less leg room than the 767's. At 5'9", it might not be too bad if the person ahead of you doesn't recline. But, it is the worst seat pitch of any North American airline, except Spirit (which doesn't allow reclining). The other potential issue is overhead bin space. Because this plane has more rows than it was originally designed for, it runs out of overhead space pretty quickly, so you need to have a bag that can go at your feet or be in a higher boarding zone. If WestJet is an option and price is the same (or close), choose WestJet over the Rouge Airbus 319. The 767 is not as bad with an inch more leg room, and unless it is completely full you should have overhead bin space.

Thanks everyone! Really appreciate your insights here. I totally forgot about Westjet.

Westjet costs a bit more and doesn't offer the times of flight I prefer but I am going to keep checking for seat sale.

:thanks:

FYI, WestJet will refund you the difference in WestJet $ if your fare goes down after booking, as long as you're a WJ Rewards member. Not sure how it works, but DH does it all the time.

One thing to consider is to download the Air Canada app prior to getting on the plane. You need it to use the wifi entertainment system.

I've flown Air Transat, Sunwing, WestJet, Air Canada, Air Canada Rouge, Delta, United, US Airways, American, Southwest, and JetBlue. Air Transat and Sunwing suck. All the others are completely comparable. With a note that Air Canada is the closest thing North American has to a full-service airline anymore. I care more about flight times than who I'm flying with. So it Rouge is the cheapest option, you'll be fine. If it is WestJet. You'll be fine.

We upgraded our flight to what they classified as first class and it was awesome. We picked the front row and had lots of space. We also go first choice of the ipad. Not sure if the shoeternal flights over food but we were given breakfast and snacks.

They don't refund the difference any more. Change as of January 2016

Thanks for all the invaluable info! I would probably go with my preferred flight times and enjoy my free pass to the Priority Lounge at the airport, so I don't have to pay extra for the cabin food. That saves some $.
:thanks:

I have flown extensively on AC this year and really find the seats on the Rouge flights terrible for me. I have long legs and am 5'10. My knees jam into the seat in front of me, and I can feel every movement of the person in front of me. I suspect they can also feel my knees. My partner is 5'9 without such long legs and finds it fine. Saying that, for a quick flight to Orlando from Toronto I will put up with it for a cheap flight, or upgrade to business if it's not too bad in price, or my booking class allows my Altitude upgrade.

However, I quite like the service on AC. We have rarely had a delayed flight, and when it did happen due to a mechanical issue, we were in the air in less than 90 minutes. They have yet to lose our bags. The food is mediocre at best - I recommend getting something tasty at the airport and carrying it on. I even have a sealable mug and get a cup of coffee at SB and it stays hot throughout the flight.

We've only had one bad experience with AC where we upgraded seats (paid) and my DH got a standby seat - they were sold out of the premium economy class seats they just accepted the upgrade amount for! What made it problematic was they wouldn't refund our 'upgrade' and put us back in our chosen seats which were together, and insisted I would be seated in the lone PE seat - sandwiched beside strangers with my 8 week old baby! Dh would be seated somewhere on the plane. I wasn't comfortable with that as a nursing mom and as someone who would need a little help with the baby. It DID get sorted out at the airport but I was furious. It was only rectified because someone else didn't show up and they moved us around - at the gate while everyone was boarding. Otherwise we would have been stuck.

That stinks. DH will not be happy at having to actually investigate pricing before booking.
I know. I booked an Orlando flight a few weeks ago. Price went down two days later. No luck changing fare. I for one prefer Air Canada Rouge, though that doesn't mean I like it. I find the west jet planes older and we always endure more turbulence on their flights (may just be a coincidence). As a previous poster said--they are all pretty much the same--which is to say lousy. Book whomever is cheapest.

Sorry to hear about your bad upgrade experience. I think AC was really not so helpful in accommodating your needs.

I usually fly AC because of the Aeroplan points and always have uneventful flights, except for one 2.5-hour delay to Beijing due to bad weather.

DD and I both have long legs but may just suck it up for the short fight and fly AC. However, I am considering paying extra to get the preferred seats. We usually pay extra for seat selection so I can be seated close to exit just in case ...

With a baby we can't choose those exit row seats.

We, too, are loyal to AC for aeroplan points. I will be 35k this year again and DH will be 50k.

I've done a few flights with Rouge. Last time was in 2014 so I don't know if they've added power ports but that was a gripe of mine. The only time I've had an issue wasn't really their fault - we were flying MCO-YYZ and there was weather preventing us from landing in Toronto (this was the year of the brutal ice storms). So we got diverted... to Buffalo (there was a synchronized groan when we were told that) and we were stuck on the tarmac for 4 hours before we were allowed into the terminal (FCC regulations, I believe).

Seats, I believe there is less pitch on the planes. I'm 5'9", so that's not a huge deal, but if you're taller it will probably be an issue. But overall I'm fine with them.

Thanks for the heads up! I will make sure to bring my power banks.

I just checked. There is no power port in the rouge cabin. Only premium rouge has power ports.
